  • Patent number: 11567002
Abstract: A system for the identification of micro-organisms includes an irradiation unit adapted to sequentially provide coherent electromagnetic radiation of one or more wavelengths along a common optical path. A holder is adapted to retain a substrate having a surface adapted for growth of a micro-organism colony. A beamsplitter is adapted to direct the coherent electromagnetic radiation from the common optical path towards the retained substrate. An imager is arranged opposite the beamsplitter from the retained substrate and is adapted to obtain images of backward-scattered light patterns from the micro-organism colony irradiated by the respective wavelengths of the directed coherent electromagnetic radiation. Some examples provide radiation of multiple wavelengths and include an imager arranged optically downstream of the retained substrate to obtain images of forward-scattered light patterns from the micro-organism colony irradiated by the wavelengths of radiation.

  • Patent number: 11562489
Abstract: A method for generating a multi-modal video dataset with pixel-wise hand segmentation is disclosed. To address the challenges of conventional dataset creation, the method advantageously utilizes multi-modal image data that includes thermal images of the hands, which enables efficient pixel-wise hand segmentation of the image data. By using the thermal images, the method is not affected by fingertip and joint occlusions and does not require hand pose ground truth. Accordingly, the method can produce more accurate pixel-wise hand segmentation in an automated manner, with less human effort. The method can thus be utilized to generate a large multi-modal hand activity video dataset having hand segmentation labels, which is useful for training machine learning models, such as deep neural networks.

  • Patent number: 11548107
Abstract: Methods of inducing segmented flow in a material in which a ductile flow mode would otherwise occur during machining. A monolayer molecular film is formed on a surface of a body of a material in a state such that the material exhibits ductile flow when subjected to shear. The monolayer molecular film has molecules each having a head group adsorbed to the surface, a terminal group, and a hydrocarbon chain therebetween having a chain length of greater than 6. A surface portion of the body is removed by engaging the body with a tool in a contact region below the surface of the body and moving the tool relative to the body to remove the surface portion and the monolayer molecular film thereon. The monolayer molecular film induces segmented flow in the material during the removing of the surface portion.
