  • Patent number: 10789396
Abstract: Improved energy conservation, including realization of a ZNET (Zero Net Energy including Transportation) paradigm, can be encouraged by providing energy consumers with a holistic view of their overall energy consumption. Current energy consumption in terms of space heating, water heating, other electricity, and personal transportation can be modeled by normalizing the respective energy consumption into the same units of energy. Options for reducing energy that can include traditional energy efficiencies, such as cutting down on and avoiding wasteful energy use and switching to energy efficient fixtures, and improving the thermal efficiency and performance of a building, can be modeled. Additional options can also include non-traditional energy efficiencies, such as replacing a gasoline-powered vehicle with an electric vehicle, fuel switching from a water heater fueled by natural gas to a heat pump water heater, and fuel switching from space heating fueled by natural gas to a heat pump space heater.

  • Patent number: 10786786
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a composite membrane using a selective layer prepared through the interfacial polymerization (support-free interfacial polymerization) on a free interface without a support and, more specifically, to a method for manufacturing a composite membrane comprising a reverse osmotic membrane, which is obtained by preparing a selective layer through a spontaneous reaction of two organic monomers on an interface between two immiscible solutions and allowing the selective layer to adhere to a support. By employing the method for manufacturing a composite membrane having a selective layer prepared through the support-free interfacial polymerization according to the present invention, a high-functional reverse osmotic membrane can be prepared using various supports other than a conventional polysulfone support, thereby extending the application range of the reverse osmotic membrane, which has been restricted due to low chemical resistance of polysulfone.

  • Patent number: 10787373
Abstract: A method of water treatment includes flowing water that includes nitrogen and phosphorus compounds through a sorption media composition within at least one chamber of a water treatment system. The composition comprises iron filings comprising at most 5 volume (vol) % of the composition, sand particles comprising at least 80 vol % of the composition, and clay particles comprising at most 5 vol % of the composition. The iron filings, sand particles, and clay particles are mixed together. During the flowing, the clay particles attract the nitrogen and phosphorus compounds, which become absorbed onto a surface of the iron filings and the clay, resulting in a removal of the nitrogen and phosphorus compounds and the generation of reaction products. Nitrogen and phosphorus are then recovered from the reaction products.
