Abstract: A heat exchanger with recuperating and condensing functions is provided. The heat exchanger includes a pressure vessel, a recuperating pipe and a cooling stream pipe. The pressure vessel has an inlet, an outlet and a baffle. The baffle, located between the inlet and the outlet, divides the interior of the pressure vessel into a working fluid recuperating region and a working fluid condensing region. The recuperating pipe is disposed in the pressure vessel, and passes through the working fluid recuperating region to heat a liquid working fluid flowing through the recuperating pipe. The cooling stream pipe is disposed in the pressure vessel, and passes through the working fluid condensing region to cool a vapor working fluid flowing into the pressure vessel. The vapor working fluid passes through the working fluid recuperating region and then flows into the working fluid condensing region.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides a dynamic comparator with equalization function including a preamplifier, switched latch and dynamic transconductance circuit. The preamplifier amplifies input signals of the dynamic comparator. The dynamic transconductance circuit is inserted between the preamplifier and the switched latch for operating in a reset mode or a comparison mode. When operating in the reset mode, the dynamic transconductance circuit in conjunction with the switched latch performs voltage equalization of output signals of the switched latch, or when operating in the comparison mode, the dynamic transconductance circuit in conjunction with the switched latch receives the output signals generated by the preamplifier and carries out signal transconductance. The switched latch generates output signals as a comparison result of the dynamic comparator based on the transconductance signals generated by the dynamic transconductance circuit.

Abstract: A climate control system for a building includes air conditioning systems and ventilation (HVAC) systems. The system is controlled by determining sensible cooling and heating rates using temperature differences at inlets and outlets at evaporators, as well as moisture absorption, moisture desorption, ventilation influences, human activities, and condensation at the evaporator. Humidity differences and temperature differences are determined as driving forces for moisture absorption, desorption, and temperatures and humidities of interior fabrics. The differences are obtained from a thermal circuit model. A latent cooling rate is determined using the humidity differences. The model integrates a temperature model and a humidity model for jointly predicting temperatures and humidities for operating the HVAC systems using a mass transfer process.

Abstract: The various embodiments of the present invention provide improved methods and circuits for generating millimeter-wave oscillations. Generating millimeter-wave oscillations may involve providing a semiconductor device comprising at least two terminals and a polar heterojunction formed from two semiconductor materials. A voltage bias may be applied to at least two terminals of the device in which the voltage enhances a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) layer at the polar heterojunction and produces a sharply-peaked but spatially-localized electric field within the 2DEG with a large longitudinal component, wherein the longitudinal component of the electric field serves as a nucleation site for a plurality of propagating dipole domains observable as a plurality of self-sustaining millimeter-wave oscillations.

Abstract: This invention relates to methods and devices for clock offset and skew estimation. The invention has particular application in the alignment of slave clocks to a master clock. In embodiments of the invention, the slave clock employs an independent free running clock and a recursive estimation technique to estimate the clock offset and clock skew between the slave and master clocks. The slave can then use the offset and skew to correct the free running clock to reflect an accurate image of the master clock.

Abstract: The present invention concerns RPE cells obtainable by directed differentiation from stem cell, particularly, human stem cells. It has been specifically found that culturing stem cells in the presence of one or more member of the TGF? superfamily, such as Activin A) induced directed differentiation into mature and functional RPE cells. This was evidenced by the expression of markers specific to mature RPE cells, including MiTF-A, RPE65 or Bestrophin). In accordance with one particular embodiment, the cells are a priori cultured with nicotinamide (NA) which was found to augment the cells' response to the inductive effect of the one or more member of the TGF? superfamily. The invention also provides methods of performing the directed differentiation, as well as methods for use of the resulting RPE cells.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a Drosophila in vitro system which was used to demonstrate that dsRNA is processed to RNA segments 21-23 nucleotides (nt) in length. Furthermore, when these 21-23 nt fragments are purified and added back to Drosophila extracts, they mediate RNA interference in the absence of long dsRNA. Thus, these 21-23 nt fragments are the sequence-specific mediators of RNA degradation. A molecular signal, which may be their specific length, must be present in these 21-23 nt fragments to recruit cellular factors involved in RNAi. This present invention encompasses these 21-23 nt fragments and their use for specifically inactivating gene function. The use of these fragments (or chemically synthesized oligonucleotides of the same or similar nature) enables the targeting of specific mRNAs for degradation in mammalian cells, where the use of long dsRNAs to elicit RNAi is usually not practical, presumably because of the deleterious effects of the interferon response.

Abstract: Disclosed are electrolysis catalysts formed from cobalt, oxygen and buffering electrolytes (e.g. fluoride). They can be formed as a coating on an anode by conducting an electrolysis reaction using an electrolyte containing cobalt and an anionic buffering electrolyte. The catalysts will facilitate the conversion of water to oxygen and hydrogen gas at a range of mildly acidic conditions. Alternatively, these anodes can be used with cathodes that facilitate other desirable reactions such as converting carbon dioxide to methanol.
