Abstract: Enhanced safety for electrical appliance, such as toaster, toaster ovens or rotisseries, is provided by a circuit arrangement which removes power from all or a portion of the appliance upon detection of potentially dangerous conditions as well as activating a visual or audible alarm. The circuit arrangement includes sensors and circuitry for detecting various types of dangerous or hazardous conditions.
Abstract: The frequency of an atomic clock may be stabilized against C-field variation by applying a rf magnetic field perpendicular to the C-field to cause a coherent population transfer between Zeeman states that compensates for quadratic frequency shift of transitions of the clock. The cancellation, provided by a feed-forward mechanism, is exact. The invention can be implemented in any atomic clock by including an electrode in the clock generating a magnetic field perpendicular to the C-field, and providing an electronic circuit to send rf signals to the electrode.

Abstract: Methods and devices for reconstructing coefficient levels from a bitstream of encoded video data for a coefficient group in a transform unit. Sign bits are hidden in the parity of partially overlapping subsets of a set of coefficients. This enables the hiding of multiple sign bits per coefficient group. Other information bits may be hidden instead of sign bits in some cases.

Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for determining the charge of a battery are disclosed. Embodiments include determining the charge in batteries that exhibit mass diffusion during charging or discharging, such as by evaluating the response of the battery to vibration. Alternate embodiments include evaluating the amplitude response of the battery and the phase shift response of the battery. Still other embodiment include evaluating the H11 response of the battery to vibration. Further embodiment include vibrating the battery, for example, with a chirp frequency that may be in the acoustic range. Still further embodiments include performing a Fourier analysis of the battery response to vibration.

Abstract: A system and method generate a graph lattice from exemplary images. At least one processor receives exemplary data graphs of the exemplary images and generates graph lattice nodes of size one from primitives. Until a termination condition is met, the at least one processor repeatedly: 1) generates candidate graph lattice nodes from accepted graph lattice nodes; 2) selects one or more candidate graph lattice nodes preferentially discriminating exemplary data graphs which are less discriminable than other exemplary data graphs using the accepted graph lattice nodes; and 3) promotes the selected graph lattice nodes to accepted status. The graph lattice is formed from the accepted graph lattice nodes and relations between the accepted graph lattice nodes.

Abstract: Cyano-substituted anthracene containing polyamines were synthesized and shown to be efficient polyamine transporter ligands. Moreover, these compounds (3 and 4) had improved fluorescence properties over previously known anthryl-polyamine conjugates, which facilitated their intracellular trafficking by confocal microscopy and fluorescence methods. These cytotoxic fluorescent agents may find use as molecular probes which traffic into cells via the polyamine transport system and may also be viable anticancer drugs which are readily quantified in human tissues due to their excellent fluorescence properties: (excitation: ?405 nm) and emission (420 nm) occurs in the visible light range. The ability to excite and emit in the visible range provides an advantage to these probes as these wavelengths are considered non-toxic to human cells (versus ultraviolet mediated excitations, ?<400 nm) and visible light lasers are less costly to purchase and operate than UV laser sources.
