Abstract: A three-dimensional cell growth containment article is described, which includes a molded body channelized by removal of sacrificial channelizing element(s) therefrom, so that the molded body contains one or more channel(s) therein, with a matrix material in at least one of such channel(s) that is supportive of three-dimensional cell growth in the matrix material. A method for making such articles is also described, in which a molded body is formed with one or more sacrificial channelizing element(s) therein, following which the sacrificial channelizing element(s) are removed. The three-dimensional cell growth containment articles of the present disclosure may be utilized in any applications in which there exists a need to reproducibly generate three-dimensional cellular structures, e.g.

Abstract: A metal organic framework (MOF)-polymer composite for detoxifying a chemical warfare agent (CWA) comprises MOF nanoparticles having catalytically active Lewis acid sites and at least one polymer having catalytically active basic sites. The composite is configured such that the at least one polymer is in surrounding relation to the MOF nanoparticles such that at least a portion of the Lewis acid sites of the MOF nanoparticles are in proximal relation to at least a portion of the basic sites of the at least one polymer thereby forming a plurality of proximal acid-base interfaces thus enabling a bifunctional catalytic mechanism for detoxifying the CWA. The MOF-polymer composite can provide CWA detoxification without the presence of a basic compound.

Operating the engine under these conditions allows the engine to function as a reformer producing a synthesis gas comprising hydrogen and carbon monoxide.

Abstract: A chromium-free catalyst for use in a fluidized bed reactor is described. The catalyst comprises 45-70 wt % Fe2O3, 5-15 wt % CuO, 20-35 wt % Al2O3, 10-20 wt % ZnO, and 1-15 wt % K2CO3. The catalyst has a Davison Index (DI %) of less than or equal to 15. A method for converting carbon monoxide (CO) into carbon-dioxide (CO2) using the catalyst is described. The method includes introducing H2O and CO into a fluidized bed reactor having an operating temperature between about 375° C. and about 450° C. and comprising the chromium free catalyst. The CO conversion is at least 60%.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides novel solid sorbents synthesized by the reaction of polyamines with polyaldehyde phosphorus dendrimer (P-dendrimer) compounds for metal sequestration. The sorbents are highly stable and exhibit desirable thermodynamics and reaction kinetics with a wide variety of metals including heavy metals and rare earth elements. The sorbents can be easily regenerated for repeated use to extract metals from an aqueous solution. The materials are stable to aqueous and organic media, as well as strong acid and bases. The sorbents maintain full capacity over many cycles of use.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to delivery and release systems, such as core-shell particles. An exemplary composition according to the disclosure can include a degradable polymeric shell surrounding a core that includes a crosslinker, which can encompass a metal, such as chromium. The core-shell particles can be provided with a gel-forming polymer, such as a polyacrylamide, into a subterranean reservoir having conditions such that the shell of the core-shell polymer degrades, and the so-released metal is effective to at least partially crosslink the gel-forming polymer to form a gel. The so-formed gel can be effective to control water flow through the subterranean reservoir, such as in relation to a waterflood of the reservoir.

Abstract: A method for making a metal organic framework suspension is described herein. The method includes providing a hybrid material comprising a nano-crystalline metal organic framework comprising micropores and a mesoporous polymeric material comprising mesopores, wherein the nano-crystalline metal organic framework is homogeneously dispersed and substantially present only within the mesopores or void spaces of the mesoporous polymeric material; and wherein the hybrid material has a weight percentage of the metal organic framework in the range of 5-50% relative to the total weight of the hybrid material. The method includes contacting the hybrid material with a solvent in which the mesoporous polymeric material is soluble, thereby forming a polymeric solution in which the nano-crystalline metal organic framework is substantially homogeneously dispersed and suspended.
Abstract: Apparatus for testing an electronic smoking (e-smoking) device includes an electronic circuit for electronically activating an e-smoking device and causing the e-smoking device to generate a plurality of puffs by converting a wicking fluid therein into a plurality of puffs without a need for a human to physically contact the e-smoking device during puff generation, and a wireless controller for controlling the electronic circuit. The electronic circuit is configured for activating the e-smoking device to generate the plurality of puffs based on wireless signals received at the wireless controller. The apparatus is further configured for measuring a characteristic of the e-smoking device, which may include a rate of conversion of the wicking fluid to vapor as a function of time for the plurality of puffs.
