Abstract: A photonic apparatus comprises an integrated waveguide, an integrated resonator in the form of a microtoroid and a thermally reflowable film. The reflowable film comprises a first film area and a second film area. The reflowable film is one of a thin film and a stack of thin films. The first film area is thermally reflown, the microtoroid is formed in the thermally reflown first film area. The second film area is not reflown in the immediate vicinity of the microtoroid. The microtoroid is optically coupled to the integrated waveguide located on or located within one of or both of the first or second film areas. The first and second film areas are directly connected to each other. The microtoroid has an edge extending along a circumference. The microtoroid can be a non-inverted or an inverted microtoroid, wherein the second film area is inside or outside of the circumference.

  • Patent number: 8268632
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a device for the recording of process parameters of reaction fluids in several microreactors which are continuously agitated, at least until the termination of the reaction in all the microreactors. The process parameters in the microreactor are recorded during the reaction by means of at least one sensor optical system. According to the invention, the reliability of the method may be increased, whereby, during the recording of the value of a process parameter, for example, on recording an instantaneous value of the auto-fluorescence of the reaction fluids, the sensor optical system is held stationary.

  • Patent number: 8268611
Abstract: The invention relates to a microtiter plate and use thereof for conducting fermentation under fed-batch conditions. In order to produce a microtiter plate which permits screening under fed-batch conditions, the invention proposes that the cavities (2) of the microtiter plate according to the invention be filled with a culturing fluid and nutrient solution and be designed in such a way that each of the cavities (2) of the microtiter plate which is filled with nutrient solution is connected by a channel (4) to at least one other further cavity (3) of the microtiter plate which is filled with a culturing fluid. A diffusion barrier (13) arranged in the material permeable channel (4) controls the kinetics of the material transfer of nutrients from the cavity containing the nutrient solution to the cavities containing the culturing fluid.

  • Patent number: 8242779
Abstract: A nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) method for detecting hydrogen peroxide includes stimulating a spin signal in a liquid sample in a static magnetic field by exciting the sample with a first electromagnetic pulse having a frequency corresponding to a hydrogen NMR frequency; after a first time period, refocusing the spin signal by a series of second electromagnetic pulses also having the NMR-corresponding frequency and separated by a first echo time, while sampling a first train of spin signals; and refocusing the spin signal by a series of third electromagnetic pulses having the NMR-corresponding frequency and separated by a second echo time while sampling a second train of spin signals, the second echo time different from the first echo time. First and second spin-spin relaxation times are derived from the trains of spin signals, and a quotient of the spin-spin relaxation times indicates the presence of hydrogen peroxide.

  • Publication number: 20110241667
Abstract: A method for performing magnetic resonance measurements on a sample includes applying a first predetermined number of pulse trains for excitation, each pulse train having a constant amplitude and including a second predetermined number of pulses spaced by a predetermined time interval. The pulse trains are modulated by a bent function. After each pulse, data is sampled. Preferably a square number of pulses is generated being constant in power, and the Walsh transform of the sequence of their phases is constant in power, so that the power of the excitation in time and frequency domain is constant. The method can reduce power requirements and may permit undercutting specific absorption rate (SAR) limits due to the small excitation power necessary to create time signals with reasonable signal to noise ratio.
