  • Patent number: 4240477
Abstract: A movable support assembly for supporting a chain-drive board infeed system. The chain-drive board infeed system feeds a board into a board edger or other similar woodworking apparatus. The movable support assembly includes a pair of frame rails for supporting the chain drive infeed system. Bearings are provided for moving the mounting frame in a lateral direction perpendicular to a predetermined infeed line of direction. This enables the mounting frame to be laterally positioned to position a board in a predetermined relationship with respect to a fixed position board edger. The frame rails are maintained in a generally parallel relationship with respect to the given infeed direction by a torque tube and linkage assembly. Both rollway and slide bearings are provided.

  • Patent number: 4221283
Abstract: An arrangement for facilitating engaging an unsynchronized reverse gear in a motor vehicle manual gearbox, where at least one forward gear is provided with a synchronizing means. A gripping means connected to the selector actuating means obtains force-transmitting connection with the forward gear selector during a part of the changing movement into reverse gear. Said force-transmitting connection is resilient in the shifting direction of the selector.

  • Patent number: 4218138
Abstract: The positions of target reflectors at a distance from a measuring station are measured with fan-shaped angularly sweeping beams of radiation emitted from the measuring station and reflected back to a detector there when each beam is intercepted by a reflector. Expected reflector distribution is analyzed to ascertain, as between adjacent reflectors at equal distances from the station, the minimum projected distance expectable between such reflectors in a separation direction in which separation can be maximum and the maximum projected distance between them in the transverse direction. Each of at least two beams has its long cross-section dimension oriented to be at an angle to that of the other and at an angle to the separation direction which is such that its tangent value is greater than the ratio of said maximum distance to said minimum distance.

  • Patent number: 4198674
Abstract: A lighting unit for a front corner on vehicle. There are a plurality of light housings that are screened off from each other in a light housing plate. Vertical walls defining first light housings are formed as a forwardly directed reflector as well as a sideways directed reflector. There is a second light housing in which a light source, in coaction with a backwardly directed reflector, provides a side backing light which is activated when engaging the vehicle reverse gear.

  • Patent number: 4195883
Abstract: A vehicle seat is carried on a frame which is pivotably mounted on a base frame that is secured to the vehicle floor. The seat can pivot around an axis that is essentially horizontal and transverse to the vehicle direction of travel. There is provided at least one damping element for damping pivotations around said axis. In this way disturbing thrusts transferred to the back of a person via the back support portion of the seat are eliminated.

  • Patent number: 4194236
Abstract: In a vehicle a bodywork portion, e.g. a driver's cabin, is movably mounted on a supporting vehicle chassis. The bodywork portion carries a lighting unit which, when the bodywork portion is in its normal position, moves together with the chassis, independent of movements performed by the bodywork portion relative to the chassis. When the bodywork portion is tilted around a transverse axis to a raised position the lighting unit is also tilted, together with the bodywork portion. The result is that the lighting unit can be given a high location and yet, when in use, moves only together with the chassis. In the bodywork portion no extra room is needed to allow tilting of the bodywork portion.

  • Patent number: 4179707
Abstract: A conveyor defines a plane in which elongated workpieces, substantially parallel to one another, are transported transversely to their lengths through a measuring zone at which each workpiece is illuminated from above and lengthwise scanned by an array camera. A pit at the measuring zone has its bottom below said plane and in shadow, to provide a strongly contrasting background for the workpiece being scanned. To accommodate skewed workpieces, the array camera makes repeated scans of each workpiece as it passes the measuring zone, and data from such scanning is stored in a computer memory. Detectors cooperate with the array camera and the computer, signaling entry of each workpiece into the measuring zone and its departure therefrom. Thickness of each workpiece is measured near the measuring zone; and in calculating length of a workpiece from the stored scanning data for it, compensation is made for scanning parallax due to thickness.

  • Patent number: 4158766
Abstract: For enabling a computer to calculate locations of cuts across an elongated workpiece that will divide it into standardized length finished pieces of optimum economic value, the workpiece is established between parallel, spaced boundaries of an inspection zone, lengthwise parallel to them. From a movable light source a beam is projected down onto the inspection zone that defines a line of illumination extending from one to the other of the boundaries. A manually operable control member, movable parallel to the boundaries, actuates the light source to move the line of illumination lengthwise along a workpiece. An output is produced that has a unique magnitude for each incrementally different position of the line of illumination. When the line of illumination is located at a boundary between unlike-quality lengthwise extending portions of the workpiece, actuation of a pushbutton delivers the then-existing output magnitude to the computer as an input.

  • Patent number: 4145111
Abstract: An aircraft-carried omnidirectional assembly of retroreflectors for reciprocal-direction reflection of laser beams comprises an aerodynamically slender body having fittings on its medial portion for attachment to underwing supports for externally carried loads. Recessed in each end portion of the body are a plurality of individual retroreflectors, one coaxial and facing endwise outwardly, the rest spaced lengthwise from it and one another and facing in different generally lateral directions but with their axes intersecting the longitudinal axis of the body and uniformly inclined towards the adjacent body extremity. The incident sectors of the several retroreflectors at each end of the body slightly overlap and complement one another to provide, collectively, a hemispherical incident sector symmetrical to the body axis and complementary to the collective hemispherical incident sector of the retroreflectors at the other end portion of the body.

  • Patent number: 4123996
Abstract: A spark ignited Otto cycle type engine have a fixed compression ratio which is supplied with a mixture of air and fuel having an octane number lower than that which would normally be appropriate for the compression ratio. The engine operates in a range below a predetermined high load without spontaneous combustion of the fuel-air mixture but will be susceptible to spontaneous combustion when operated above the predetermined high load. The engine includes means for controlling combustion of the fuel-air mixture when operating above the predetermined high load in a manner to decrease the efficiency of the engine and to prevent spontaneous combustion which would otherwise occur.

  • Patent number: 4114937
Abstract: The invention relates to vehicle bumpers of the kind including attachment means in the form of energy-absorbing pivotable connections. In a collision the bumper height of the concerned vehicles can vary particularly if the following vehicle brakes just prior to impact and is hence nose down on its suspension at the moment of impact. The object of the invention is to provide a bumper arrangement which can swing upwardly or downwardly to reduce the possibility of severe chassis damage in the event of such an impact. The invention provides an arrangement in which each pivotable connection comprises two hinge-halves mounted on a pivot shaft, the bumper being attached to one hinge-half, and the other hinge-half being attached to the vehicle, and in which energy-absorbing elements are arranged between the hinge-halves.

  • Patent number: 4106538
Abstract: Strictly translatory substantially lengthwise horizontal motion is imparted to an elongated workpiece such as a cant having top and bottom face surfaces, at least one of which is flat, to feed the workpiece from an orienting station towards a trimming station at which straight, parallel longitudinal side surfaces are formed on the workpiece that are perpendicular to said flat face surface. For such translatory motion, driving dogs engage one face surface at longitudinally spaced portions of a narrow zone thereof which is spaced substantially equal distances from its longitudinal edges; the driving dogs are confined to linear motion in the feed direction; and the other face surface is engaged by horizontal freely revolving rollers extending transversely to the feed direction at intervals therealong. At the orienting station the oriented workpiece is clampwise engaged by the rollers and dogs by effecting relative vertically converging motion between them.
