Abstract: There is provided a coated cutting insert particularly useful for finishing operations in milling of grey cast iron. The insert has a fine-grained WC-Co cemented carbide body and a coating of multiple layers of TiC.sub.x N.sub.y deposited at conditions aiming to minimize the decarburization of the cutting edge without any negative effects on the substrate. There is also disclosed a method of applying a TiC.sub.x N.sub.y layer by CVD technique on a cemented carbide cutting insert without eta phase formation and without etching of the binder phase.
Abstract: The air flow rate through a rock drill bit is measured while the drill bit is connected to a drill string. A tube of a manometer is inserted into a channel of the drill bit while an air flow is conducted through the drill string and channel, whereby the manometer measures a pressure of the air flow in the channel. From that measurement, a nominal air flow rate is calculated. The nominal air flow rate is corrected as a function of at least one parameter selected from: a difference between a temperature of air entering the drill bit and a temperature of air ambient to the drill bit, and a height of the drill bit above sea level.
Abstract: There is now provided a method of machining and shaping a through opening in a fiber-reinforced composite material starting from a preformed hole. At least one rotation symmetrical milling body with a substantially smaller diameter than that of the preformed hole is placed in that hole and the opening is machined and shaped by the milling body partly rotating around its own axis, partly by a translational movement relative to the edge of the opening. According to the method, the fiber-reinforced material is oriented in such a way that the axis of rotation of the milling body is essentially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the fibers at the edge of the opening. The size and/or form of the finished opening differs significantly from that of the preformed hole. The radial spread of the damages and/or the defects define a lower limit for the amount of material removed.

The length of the drill bit front portion (11a) is about twice the length of the drill bit rear portion (11b). The length of the piston rear portion (10a) is about twice the length of the piston front portion (11b). The invention further relates to a drill bit (11) and a piston (10), per se.

Further, the product exhibits normal hardness when cooled to room temperature subsequent to the friction welding thereby having a minimum core hardness at the heat affected zone above 390 HV1.
Abstract: There is disclosed a silicon nitride based cutting tool insert for chipforming machining of cast iron material having improved mechanical, chemical and wear properties. This is obtained by addition of one or more transition metal oxides which act as a sintering aid together with alumina and yttria and also promote the growth of elongated grains of beta silicon nitride during the sintering. Preferably, the inserts are provided with a wear resistant coating as known in the art. The ceramic cutting tool material according to the present invention comprises a beta silicon nitride matrix with total amount of 0.5-10 weight %, preferably 0.5-6 weight %, of an intergranular phase and 0.05-3 weight % of at least one secondary crystalline phase of a transition metal carbide, nitride, carbonitride and/or silicide present as spherical particles with a size of 0.1-2 .mu.m, preferably submicron (0.01-1 .mu.m). The transition metal is preferably niobium and/or tantalum.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for polishing coated cutting tools and wear parts, where at least the outer layer of the coating consists of TiN, TiC or Ti(C,N), to a high surface finish. An electrolytic method is used with an electrolyte consisting of perchloric (HClO.sub.4) or sulphuric (H.sub.2 SO.sub.4) acid, 2-50 volume %, in methanol or other organic liquid. The method is easier to control than conventional mechanical methods and renders a high surface finish over the whole coated part.

Abstract: A method of making a hard constituent powder coated with Co and/or Ni in a solution by liquid reduction of the Co and/or Ni from a suitable metal compound with a polyol while keeping the powder in suspension, the polyol functioning both as a solvent and as a reducing agent at the same time. By separating the intermediate solid compound and hard constituent from the suspension before any by-products are formed and reducing the intermediate solid compound in the dry state by H.sub.2 for around 24 hours or by using an excess of about 10 times more moles polyol than moles metal, the polyol can be conserved or reused leading to improved cost efficiency of the process.
