Abstract: A method wherein one or more metal salts of at least one iron group metal containing organic groups are dissolved and complex bound in at least one polar solvent with at least one complex former comprising functional groups in the form of OH or NR.sub.3, (RH.dbd.H or alkyl). Hard constituent powder and, optionally, a soluble carbon source are added to the solution. The solvent is evaporated and the remaining powder is heat treated in an inert and/or reducing atmosphere. As a result, coated hard constituent powder is obtained which after addition of a pressing agent can be compacted and sintered according to standard practice to a body containing hard constituents in a binder phase.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a tool and a metal tip of the tool. The tool includes a tool blank, a bearing portion and a metal tip where the tool is intended to be rotatably mounted in a road planing cutter. The longitudinal axis of the tool forms, in active position, an angle V in the interval 20.degree.-90.degree. relative to the road surface. The metal tip includes a portion for attachment to the tool blank and a cylindrical or slightly conical portion that is connected to a shape-defining surface located at the opposite end of the metal tip in relation to the attachment portion. The metal tip is mounted in the tool and contacts the road surface in the active position. The metal tip has a sharp edge in the transition between the cylindrical or slightly conical portion and the shape-defining surface.
Abstract: The present invention relates to buttons, inserts and bodies for rock drilling, rock cutting, metal cutting and wear part applications. The buttons, inserts and bodies comprise cemented carbide provided with bodies and/or layers of CVD- or PVD-fabricated diamond and then HP/HT treated in the diamond stable area. The bodies of cemented carbide may have a uniform structure or a multi-structure containing eta-phase surrounded by a surface zone of cemented carbide free of eta-phase.

Abstract: A threading tap comprises a cylindrical shaft and a threading portion. At least the threading portion comprises a compound material comprising a core of high speed steel or tool steel and a cover of "Coronite".RTM., i.e., a hard material with 30 to 70% by volume of submicronic hard materials in the form of carbides, nitrides and/or carbonitrides of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo and/or W in a metallic matrix based on Fe, Co and/or Ni. The chip surfaces adjacent to the cutting edges of the cutting threads have a negative rake angle. The threading tap has proven to be excellent at the threading of titanium-based alloys.
Abstract: A coated cutting tool body is coated with one or several refractory layers of which at least one layer is a dense, fine-grained layer of .alpha.-Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 preferably textured in the (012) direction. The coated tool according to the present invention exhibits excellent surface finish and shows much improved wear and toughness properties compared to prior art objects when used for machining steel, cast iron and, particularly, when machining nodular cast iron.
Abstract: Cemented carbide inserts are available containing WC and cubic phases of carbide and/or carbonitride in a binder phase based on cobalt and/or nickel with a binder phase enriched surface zone. The binder phase content along a line essentially bisecting the rounded edge surfaces increases toward the edge and cubic phase is present. As a result, the edge toughness of the cutting inserts is improved.

Abstract: A method for coating components such as cutting tools with diamond using a microwave plasma excited gas mixture in a reactor equipped with a bowl-shaped substrate table having a concave inner surface for supporting the components to be coated. The plasma forms a plasma ball during the coating operation and the geometrical shape, configuration and position of the table is adapted to stabilize the plasma and control the shape and position of the plasma in such a way that the outer surface of the plasma conforms substantially to the surfaces of the components to be coated.
Abstract: A cutter mounted on a boring head includes a shaft and a roller body rotatably mounted thereon The greasing of bearings disposed between the roller body and shaft is achieved through an axial bore formed in the shaft and into which a filling plug is inserted. Grease is pumped through the filling plug and into channels in which the bearings are disposed. The filling plug is then removed, leaving the bore essentially grease-free. To prevent the escape of grease from the passage during a cutting operation, while accommodating thermal expansion of the grease, a grease retainer plug is secured in the passage. The retainer plug forms a space which communicates with the bearings for receiving thermally expanding grease. If the volume of expanded grease exceeds the volume of that space, the grease passes through a pressure relief valve and displaces a cover of the valve to create another space of gradually expanding volume for receiving the grease.
Abstract: A cutting insert for chipforming machining of metal workpieces is disclosed, which comprises top and bottom surfaces and side walls therebetween. A land area extends around the entire insert and a descending surface joins the inner margin of the land. An elongated rib is provided at each corner region which rib terminates at a certain distance from the descending surface. Two distantly provided chipbreaking projections are provided at a forward nose portion of the elongated rib in order to facilitate chipbreaking at small depths of cut and moderate feed.

C. to alpha-corundum and applying a ceramic top layer.
Abstract: There is now provided a sintered titanium-based carbonitride alloy for metal cutting containing hard constituents based on Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo and/or W and 3-30% binder phase based on Co and/or Ni. The structure contains well-dispersed and/or as agglomerates, 10-50% by volume hard constituent grains essentially without core-rim structure with a mean grain size of 0.8-5 .mu.m in a more fine-grained matrix with a mean grain size of the hard constituents of <1 .mu.m. The matrix is made from a powder being prepared from an intermetallic pre-alloy disintegrated to <50 .mu.m particle size and then carbonitrided in situ to extremely fine-grained hard constituents having a diameter .ltoreq.0.1 .mu.m within the binder phase metals.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a ceramic cutting insert containing whiskers for chip forming machining of steel and having improved mechanical, thermal and wear properties. The insert comprises besides the oxide-based matrix 5-50% by volume, preferably 10-40% by volume, of homogeneously dispersed whiskers of carbides, nitrides and/or borides of titanium and/or zirconium and, where applicable, solid solutions thereof. A part of the whiskers may be replaced by whiskers of silicon carbide. The properties of the composite material can be further modified by coating the whisker material with thin layers. The whiskers reinforced cutting material shows an improved toughness behaviour and resistance to thermal crack formation without having a negative influence on the wear resistance to any appreciable extent.
