Publication number: 20160362973Abstract: A coiled tubing deployment system includes an offshore rig having a reel positioned thereon and coiled tubing wound on the reel. A guide arch is positioned on the offshore rig to receive the coiled tubing from the reel, and a tubing guide receives the coiled tubing from the guide arch and directs the coiled tubing into water. A depth counter measures a length of the coiled tubing deployed from the reel and generate one or more length measurement signals, and a set of bend sensors is positioned on the tubing guide to measure real-time strain assumed by the coiled tubing as deployed into the water and thereby generate one or more bend sensor signals. A data acquisition system receives the length measurement signals and the bend sensor signals and provides an output signal indicative of real-time bending fatigue of the coiled tubing at select locations along the coiled tubing.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 13, 2015Publication date: December 15, 2016Applicant: Halliburton Energy Services, inc.Inventors: Alan Charles John Turner, Richard Ian Gillings, Anna Savenkova

Publication number: 20160363250Abstract: A crack arrestor apparatus and method for making same by applying layers of a composite material of non-metallic fibers and resin around a length of pipe; the fibers generally aligned with the pipe circumference. The applied layers have a thicker portion in the middle and a thinner portion on the ends. Part of the pipe covered by the thicker portion is then yielded by application of radial force past the elastic limit of the pipe, thereby creating circumferential tension on the composite. At least a portion of the composite remains in circumferential tension upon release of the radial force. The residual stresses in the yielded metal pipe assist to arrest crack propagation. Thereby, the process to arrest a crack in a metal pipe includes maintaining circumferential tension in a composite residing around the pipe while maintaining compressive circumferential residual stress on the metal pipe covered by the composite.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 19, 2016Publication date: December 15, 2016Applicant: Stress Engineering Services, Inc.Inventor: Richard C.
