Abstract: The water dispersibility of a reconstitutable food powder such as powdered milk is improved by adding to the powdered food during its manufacture a non-toxic surface active agent which is a fatty alcohol derivative having the formula RO--C.sub.2 H.sub.3 O (A)--n H wherein A represents --CH.sub.2 OH and n has a value of 2-10 or A represents --CH.sub.2 OCH.sub.2 CHOHCH.sub.2 OH and n has a value of 1-5, R is selected from alkyl, alkenyl C or carbonyl alkenyl groups and each of the alkyl and alkenyl groups is a straight chain having 8-22 carbons. When manufacturing milk powders, the non-ionic surface active agent also exhibits outstanding anti-foaming qualities.

Abstract: New amphoteric compounds which contain two basic groups, at least one of which is a quaternary ammonium group, and an anionic group of the carboxylic type and one or two lipophile chains. These compounds have excellent cationic characteristics while being less, and in some cases nonirritating to the mucous membrane of the eye.
Abstract: Aminated .gamma.-dialdehyde and the quaternary ammonium salts thereof are prepared by acid hydrolysis of their respective corresponding 2.5-dialkoxy 3-amino 4-hydroxy tetrahydrofurans or by acid hydrolysis of their respective corresponding tetraalkyl acetals. The aminated .gamma.-dialdehydes and the quaternary ammonium salts thereof are usefully employed in cosmetic compositions to tan the skin or to strengthen or restructure the hair.

Abstract: A packaged, self-heating neutralizing composition for use in the second stage of a permanent waving operation comprises a first component selected from a water-soluble sulfite, bisulfite, metabisulfite or thiourea stored in one compartment of a two-compartment package and a second component comprising H.sub.2 O.sub.2 separately stored in the second compartment of said two compartment package. Just before use, the said components are mixed together with an accompanying evolution of sensible heat. The resulting mixture contains free H.sub.2 O.sub.2 in amounts of about 0.5-3 percent by weight of the composition.
Abstract: A gel comprises an aqueous solution of a vinyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymer and at least one amino acid having a basic character present in an amount effective to impart to said solution a pH ranging between 3 and 9. The gel is employed as a carrier in cosmetic compositions.

Abstract: Cationic surface-active agents which are polyhydroxylated tertiary amines or the quaternary ammonium salts thereof and which are usefully employed in cosmetic compositions, are prepared by condensing on a fatty alcohol, glycerol epihalohydrin alone or together with an epoxide to form polyhalogenated polyethers, which in turn are converted to polyhalogenated glycidyl ethers, the latter being reacted with a secondary amine to form polyhalogenated tertiary amines which are then reacted with sodium or potassium acetate in the presence of a diol to form said polyhydroxylated tertiary amines.

Abstract: N-oxypyridyl derivative selected from the group consisting ofA. a compound of the formula ##STR1## wherein the sulfur atom is attached to the N-oxypyridyl nucleus in a position ortho or para to the NO group, and R.sub.1 represents hydrogen, --COR.sub.2 or --SO.sub.2 R.sub.2 wherein R.sub.2 is alkyl having 1-4 carbon atoms, phenyl or tolyl;B. the metal complex of the compound in (a) when R.sub.1 is hydrogen; andC. the metal salt of the compound in (a) when R.sub.1 is --COR.sub.2 or --SO.sub.2 R.sub.2.These derivatives are usefully employed in compositions for application to the hair, scalp or skin in order to combat the greasy and unaesthetic appearance of the hair and scalp and to counteract the formation of body odors of skin. The composition includes the said derivative of pyridine together with an appropriate carrier including, for instance, water, lower alkanol, an aqueous solution of a lower alkanol, a detergent and a cosmetic powder.
