Abstract: A self-contained air conditioner cools a building's air using a water-cooled economizer coil and two refrigerant evaporators. The two evaporators are provided by two separate refrigeration circuits, each having its own water-cooled condenser. A water circuit interconnecting the economizer and the two condensers is reconfigureable to selectively operate the air conditioner in a normal mode or, if conditions permit, in an energy-saving economizer mode. In the normal mode, the water circuit conveys cooling water in series through both condensers while bypassing the economizer coil. In the economizer mode, the water flows in series through the economizer and one of the condensers while bypassing the other. The refrigerant circuit whose condenser is bypassed can thus be deactivated to save energy. The economizer coil and the condenser it bypasses have generally the same flow resistance to water flow.
Abstract: A falling film evaporator for use in a vapor compression refrigeration chiller preferably employs a two-phase refrigerant distributor that overlies the tube bundle in the evaporator shell. The tube bundle defines at least one vapor lane which facilitates the conduct of refrigerant vapor from the interior of the tube bundle to the exterior thereof in a manner which does not substantially affect the vertically downward flow of liquid refrigerant through the tube bundle and across the vapor lane.

Abstract: There is provided a microphone apparatus with an adjusting mechanism that prevents wind noise generated at a sound absorbing hole from perceptively inputted in the structure having a microphone built-in at the back of a panel with a sound absorbing hole.
Abstract: A shipment form is provided including a face sheet, a liner ply, a reusable adhesive laminate, and a laminating adhesive. The face sheet defines first and second major faces and includes printed indicia on the first major face. The printed indicia being arranged to indicate an attempted delivery. The reusable adhesive laminate includes a reusable adhesive and a removable ply. The reusable adhesive and the removable ply are configured such that the reusable adhesive retains its properties of adhesion following removal of the removable ply therefrom. The laminating adhesive is interposed between the liner ply and the face sheet so as to secure the liner ply to the second major face of the face sheet. The laminating adhesive is further interposed between the reusable adhesive laminate and the face sheet so as to secure the reusable adhesive laminate to the second major face of the face sheet.

Abstract: A continuous casting installation comprises an ingot mould and an oscillating holding device used for causing the ingot mould to swing when in a casting position. The installation consists, in a separable manner, of an interchangeable part and a stationary part. To replace the intechangeable part, it is separated from the stationary one and moved using a conveying means, at least along a partial path, from its position of operation into an area beneath the casting position. This enables, especially in the multiline casting installations, the interchangeable part to be transported during the casting process and, for example, along paths comprising straight or arciform segments, to any purposefully selected position and to be replaced by a new interchangeable part to be replaced in multiline installations with no interference with the casting process in any adjacent ingot arrangement.
Abstract: A document dispensing system comprising a companion document data transfer device and a document dispenser having a document variables data input terminal, a document printer, a digital data input port coupled to the companion document data transfer device, a companion document data memory, an operational program memory, and a digital controller programmed to store new companion document data in the companion document data memory and to control the document printer in accordance with the document variables data, the new companion document data, and the operational program data. Replacement companion document data is downloaded from the data transfer device to the companion document data memory via the digital data input port.
Abstract: A impeller shaft assembly is disclosed for use in a refrigerant compressor, and more particularly in a commercial high-speed centrifugal impeller shaft configuration. The impeller shaft assembly includes a contoured spacer body. The contoured spacer body includes a front face, a rear face, a recessed spring bearing surface in its rear face, and a spring spacing abutment including a shoulder that is seated against a protective washer. The contoured spacer body functions to prevent the headed front end of a fastener from coming into direct contact with a spring assembly and protective washer. Consequently, the spring assembly and protective washer are not sized to correspond to the cross-section area of the headed front end as disclosed in the prior art. Instead, the protective washer and spring assembly are sized to fit the rear face of the contoured spacer body, which in turn is sized to fit the front face of a first stage impeller.
Abstract: In aluminum-based metal pigments produced by physical vapor deposition of a metal film and subsequent crushing of the metal film metal surfaces which are exposed after the operation of crushing the metal film and in particular fracture surfaces thereof are covered with a passivating protective layer to afford corrosion stability of those metal pigments.

Abstract: Solid membranes comprising an intimate, gas-impervious, multi-phase mixture of an electronically-conductive material and an oxygen ion-conductive material and/or a mixed metal oxide of a perovskite structure are described. Electrochemical reactor components, such as reactor cells, and electrochemical reactors are also described. The reactor cells generally comprise first and second zones separated by an element having a first surface capable of reducing oxygen to oxygen ions, a second surface capable of reacting oxygen ions with an oxygen-consuming gas, an electron-conductive path between the first and second surfaces and an oxygen ion-conductive path between the first and second surfaces.

Abstract: An air-handler includes an AC induction motor that drives a blower to move air across a heat exchanger. A switch system selectively determines whether the blower motor operates at its rated full speed or at a reduced speed. For full speed operation, the switch system couples an AC supply at a nominal line frequency directly to the blower motor and bypasses an inverter. For reduced speed operation, the switch system couples a lower frequency output of the inverter to the blower motor. The blower is operated at a reduced speed during a pre-run dehumidification mode, a post-run heat recovery mode, and/or an electronic air-cleaning mode. The switch system allows the rated current capacity of the inverter to be substantially less that the rated full load current of the blower motor.
Abstract: A voltage sag generator for alternating current power systems intentionally creates power quality disturbances. The sag generator has a switch-mode impedance between its input and its output. Varying the duty-cycle of the switch-mode impedance causes voltage sags.
Abstract: A refrigeration chiller employs a centrifugal compressor the impellers of which are mounted on a shaft which is itself mounted for rotation using rolling element bearings lubricated only by the refrigerant which constitutes the working fluid of the chiller system. Apparatus is taught for providing liquid refrigerant to (1.) the bearings immediately upon chiller start-up, during chiller operation and during a coastdown period subsequent to shutdown of the chiller and (2.) the drive motor of the chiller's compressor for motor cooling purposes. By use of a variable speed-driven motor to drive the compressor, optimized part load chiller performance is achieved in a chiller which does not require or employ an oil-based lubrication system.
