  • Publication number: 20210100268
Abstract: A method is disclosed for making palatable methionine-restricted foods, to deliver a methionine-restricted diet to human or veterinary patients. A protein or a food product containing protein is partially oxidized, preferably with ozone, to oxidize nearly all of the methionine and cysteine. After oxidation, tryptophan and lysine are optionally added back since they tend to be oxidized also. Optionally, a small amount of methionine is also added back so that the final methionine is within a preferred range of about 0.85 to about 1.8 gram methionine per 100 gram total protein, preferably about 1.2 gram per 100 gram total protein.

  • Publication number: 20210101702
Abstract: A hybrid propulsion system includes a housing, at least two electrodes, a solid-grain fuel material, a combustion chamber, an oxidizer port, and a nozzle. The housing has a first end and a second end and defines a cavity. The electrodes extend into the cavity. The fuel material is free of an oxidizer and is positioned in the cavity. The fuel material has a combustion surface and is exposed to the electrodes. The combustion chamber is defined between the combustion surface and the second end. The oxidizer port provides a flow of oxidizer to the combustion chamber. The nozzle is positioned at the second end. Combustion of the fuel material in the combustion chamber may be dominated by radiative heat transfer. Combustion of the fuel material in the combustion chamber may generate thrust of no more than 5 N at an oxidizer flow rate of no more than 5 g/s.

  • Patent number: 10967363
Abstract: Metal-support interaction offers electronic, geometrical and compositional effects to tune and maneuver catalytically active sites. Here we report the first example of a reactive metal support interaction (RMSI) between Pt and various MXenes, which are two-dimensional (2D) metal carbides, nitrides, or carbonitrides. The invention thus provides intermetallic Pt/MXene nanoparticle catalysts comprising platinum and MXene moieties. Pt3Ti and Pt3Nb intermetallic nanoparticle catalysts were prepared by RMSI of Pt nanoparticles supported on Ti3C2 and Nb2C MXenes. The intermetallic structures were verified by XAS, ARSTEM, and XPS. Experimental analysis showed that the extent of alloy formation is temperature dependent. Kinetics analysis revealed that in contrast to Pt/Al2O3, Pt supported by Nb2CTx exhibits weaker CO adsorption and the alloy-MXene interface shows enhanced ability of H2O dissociation for a water gas shift (WGS) reaction at 300° C.

  • Publication number: 20210099069
Abstract: The disclosure presents configurations and analyses of magnetic gears, which may be used in the second stage of a multistage magnetically geared generator for a marine hydrokinetic generator application and/or other applications as described. In order to reduce field harmonics and maximize the torque density, a Halbach rotor topology is utilized. One feature of the disclosed configuration is a unique magnet arrangement that enables inner and outer Halbach rotor magnets to be more easily assembled, even with dimensional tolerance inaccuracies. The disclosed Halbach magnet rotor topology makes use of the internal magnet forces to retain the magnets in position, and the disclosed configuration also helps with the assembly process.

  • Patent number: 10966011
Abstract: Accurate measurements of the sound pressure level require regular calibration of the microphone. Closed-coupler calibration devices are designed to work with laboratory and working standard microphones, but there are numerous microphones with dimensions that do not fit a standard coupler. For example, micro-electro-mechanical system microphones are very small and widely used due to their size, performance, and cost. Described herein is an acoustical coupler that can accommodate microphones of arbitrary cross-sectional shape. The coupler utilizes a flexible membrane that adapts to the shape of the microphone. In contrast to a rigid enclosure, the permeability of the membrane creates an open system that reduces the sensitivity to fit. The precision and accuracy of the device is demonstrated by calibrating a small, oddly shaped microphone using the substitution method.
