Abstract: Unsymmetrical bisazides containing chelating and non-chelating azido groups undergo chemoselective three-component copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne conjugation reactions with two different alkyne molecules. In conjunction with the reactivity gap between aromatic and aliphatic alkynes, a bistriazole molecule can be generated with an excellent regioselectivity by mixing two alkynes and a bisazide in a single reaction container. This method is applicable in aqueous solutions at neutral pH, which may lend utilities in bioconjugation applications.

Abstract: Wireless devices in proximity are securely paired with one another autonomously by generating a common cryptographic key directly from a time-varying wireless environment shared among the wireless devices. The shared key can be used by the wireless devices to authenticate each wireless device's physical proximity and then to facilitate confidential communication between the wireless devices. The algorithm used to create the shared key is secure against a computationally unbounded adversary and its computational complexity is linear in the size of the shared key.

Abstract: This invention offers an effective method of inhibiting the expression of apolipoprotein E by mammalian cells. Apolipoprotein E is a protein that plays a significant role in the development of Alzheimer's Disease in humans. The method comprises administering an effective amount of a triarylmethyl amine compound having the general formula: wherein the R1 group may comprise acyclic amines and aliphatic amines. The R2 group may comprise one of three aryl varieties: aryl, substituted aryl, or heterocycle. Triarylamine compounds inhibit apolipoprotein E expression in mammalian cells. In one aspect of the invention the mammalian cells may be human cells, and more specifically may be human brain cells.

Abstract: The performance of a radio frequency identification (RFID) system is improved by a protocol that eliminates collisions between signals generated by a) RFID tags that the RFID reader has already identified as being in its interrogation zone and b) RFID tags that are newly arrived and thus that the reader has not yet identified. This is illustratively accomplished by the use of separate identification and access frames. It is during the identification frame that newly arrived tags become identified by the reader. Although there may be collisions during the identification frame, those collisions are only among newly arrived tags. The already-identified tags communicate with the reader during respective time slots of the access frame, so that they neither collide with each other nor with the newly arrived tags.

Abstract: The invention discloses methods for making photonic bandgap structures and photonic bandgap structures made by those processes. In one embodiment, the photonic bandgap structure is flexible. In another photonic bandgap structure, the structure has a graded, periodic grating. One embodiment of a method according to the present invention comprises the steps of preparing a pre-polymer mixture, positioning that mixture between two slides, exposing the mixture to electromagnetic radiation, curing the mixture, and discarding at least one of the slides. In another embodiment of the method, the pre-polymer mixture is exposed to the electromagnetic radiation through a prism. In one embodiment of the method, the pre-polymer mixture is exposed to the electromagnetic radiation through a lens. In one embodiment of the invention, the photonic bandgap structure is used as a filter in a multispectral imaging device comprising a imaging device, the filter, a processor, and an electronic image storage device.

Abstract: A method of making dispersion-strengthened alloy particles involves melting an alloy having a corrosion and/or oxidation resistance-imparting alloying element, a dispersoid-forming element, and a matrix metal wherein the dispersoid-forming element exhibits a greater tendency to react with a reactive species acquired from an atomizing gas than does the alloying element. The melted alloy is atomized with the atomizing gas including the reactive species to form atomized particles so that the reactive species is (a) dissolved in solid solution to a depth below the surface of atomized particles and/or (b) reacted with the dispersoid-forming element to form dispersoids in the atomized particles to a depth below the surface of said atomized particles. Bodies made from the dispersion strengthened solidified particles exhibit enhanced fatigue and creep resistance and reduced wear as well as enhanced corrosion and/or oxidation resistance at high temperatures.

Abstract: The invention is directed to network management systems and methods that provide substantially real-time network management and control capabilities of multimedia streaming traffic in telecommunications networks. The invention provides pre-emptive and autonomous network management and control capabilities, and may include shared intelligence of embedded systems—Heterogeneous Sensor Entities (HSE) and the Sensor Service Management (SSM) system. HSEs are distributed real-time embedded systems provisioned in various network elements. HSEs performs fault, configuration, accounting, performance and security network management functions in real-time; and real-time network management control activations and removals. SSM facilitates automated decision making, rapid deployment of HSEs and real-time provisioning of network management and control services. The service communication framework amongst various HSEs and the SSM is provided by the Heterogeneous Service Creation system.
