Patent number: 8978458Abstract: A system and related method for improving tire uniformity includes identifying at least one candidate process effect and a corresponding process harmonic number for each process effect. A given uniformity parameter, such as radial or lateral run-out, balance, mass variation, radial lateral or tangential force variation, is measured for each tire in a test set, such that the measurements contain tire harmonics as well as a process harmonics corresponding to each candidate process effect. Rectangular coordinate coefficients are electronically constructed for each said process harmonic, after which point the rectangular coordinates corresponding to each process harmonic are solved for (e.g., by using regression-based analysis). The magnitude of each said process harmonic is estimated, and a final magnitude estimate for each process harmonic can be determined by summarizing (e.g., by taking the average or median value) the respectively estimated magnitudes for each process harmonic across all test tires.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2011Date of Patent: March 17, 2015Assignees: Michelin Recherche et Technique S.A., Compagnie Generale des Etablissements MichelinInventors: William David Mawby, Jonathan Sauls

Patent number: 8978702Abstract: A fluid processing apparatus for processing a material to be processed between processing surfaces of processing members capable of approaching to and separating from each other, so as to rotate relative to each other, introduces a first fluid between the processing surfaces, introduces a second fluid between the processing surfaces from another flow path independent of the first fluid, and mixes and stirs the first and second fluids between the processing surfaces to undergo treatment. A processing member is composed by assembling a plurality of divided components of the processing member. An opening and a flow path are formed in the space between the plurality of components. This eliminates the need to create all ring-shaped disks which are the processing member as one block, and also eliminates the need to substantially process the flow path leading to the opening, thereby making it possible to easily undergo decomposition and cleaning.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 2011Date of Patent: March 17, 2015Assignee: M. Patent number: 8978721Abstract: A heat-expandable rubber layer is provided to an inner all of a pneumatic tire when the tire is in an uncured state. The rubber layer is expanded when the tire is in a vulcanized state. Once expanded, the rubber layer is capable of reducing rolling noises of the tire. The rubber layer includes an elastomer composition based on at least an elastomer, e.g., natural rubber or butyl rubber; a reinforcing filler, e.g., silica and/or carbon black; between 10 and 80 phr of a blowing agent, e.g., an azodicarbonamide compound; and between 10 and 50 phr of a hot-melt compound with a melting point between 70° C. and 150° C., e.g., urea. The combination of the blowing agent and the hot-melt compound, at recommended high contents, makes it possible to very greatly reduce an expansion ratio and therefore a thickness of the rubber layer once the pneumatic tire is vulcanized, without affecting noise absorption properties provided by the blowing agent.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 2010Date of Patent: March 17, 2015Assignees: Compagnie Generale des Etablissements Michelin, Michelin Recherche et Technique S.A.Inventors: Mitsue Tanaka, Salvatore Pagano
