Abstract: A device, system and method for creating pulsed electric fields with good uniformity are provided. The electric fields occupy a large volume, suitable for placing a human or animal patient. A device for generating the electric fields is provided, which comprises one or more toroidally or cylindrically shaped magnetic core(s) wound with electrical wires, which, when pulsed with electrical currents, generate an electric field of high uniformity in the interior region of the toroidal or cylindrical cores. These electric field pulses, when used in conjunction with pharmacological agent, destroy cancer cells through a process called Targeted Osmotic Lysis.

Abstract: A conditionally replicating adenovirus were generated that can specifically replicate and express therapeutic genes in neuroendocrine tumors. The promoter-specific expression of the adenoviruses is regulated upstream by an INSM1 (insulinoma-associated-1) promoter that is silent in normal adult tissues but active in developing neuroendocrine cells and neuroendocrine tumors. By placing the I NSM 1-promoter with an insulator and two copies of neuronal restrictive silencer elements in an adenoviral vector, the construct can retain tumor specificity and drive expression of a mutated adenovirus E1A gene (?24E1A) and the herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase gene. The I NSM1-promoter-driven viruses could replicate specifically in the I NSM1-positive cells and I NSM1-specific HSV-tk expression in combination with ganciclovir treatment displayed dose-dependent tumor cell-specific killing in insulinomas.

Abstract: A device and method are disclosed for intravenous cannulation. The device employs a spring to precisely and accurately control the force and velocity imparted to a piercing needle, with mechanical constraints built into the device to precisely and accurately control the distance through which the piercing needle travels. A sheathed-needle configuration is used with an outer, echogenic needle that can be seen via ultrasound; and an inner needle used to pierce the vein. The operator releases the piercing needle with a controlled velocity, controlled force, and controlled travel distance. The device reduces the human error and complications that have previously been associated with manually piercing a vein for cannulation.
