  • Publication number: 20100301866
Abstract: An apparatus for detecting and avoiding an underground object during a horizontal directional drilling operation. The apparatus comprises a boring tool with a capacitive detection system. The boring tool is operatively connected to a drill string and advanced through the earth to create a borehole. The capacitive detection system includes a capacitive assembly and a processor. The capacitive assembly has first and second capacitive plates separated a known distance from an excitation plate. The capacitive plates detect a change in capacitance when the underground object is approached by the boring tool. The processor determines the distance to or location of the underground object from capacitance information sensed by the capacitive detection system. The distance and location information is transmitted to a machine operator.

  • Patent number: 7759824
Abstract: A system and method use magnetic field sensing to detect underground objects for strike avoidance. The system detects magnetic field components for both passive distortions in the magnetic field indicative of a ferromagnetic object and active magnetic fields that are impressed on an object by a signal generator. A detection module has a magnetic sensor assembly that detects the magnetic field components. The magnetic field component data is transferred through a multiplexer to an analog/digital converter to a processor. Pitch angle data from a pitch sensor and roll angle data from a roll sensor also may be transferred to the processor. The data is processed by the processor to determine the orientation of the detection module with respect to the object. The detection module may be installed in an underground boring tool or a trenching assembly.

  • Publication number: 20100168933
Abstract: A turret mounted compact tool carrier. The tool carrier is a small, ride-on machine. The tracked substructure is connected to the upper section of the machine by a 360 degree turret, which allows the upper section of the machine to face any direction, independent of the direction of the tracks. The distance between the tracks is adjustable, depending on particular application. An operator rides on a platform at the back of the upper section, while a work tool is connected to the front of the upper section. Thus, the operator always maintains a line-of-sight parallel to the direction of operation of the work tool, resulting in a greater degree of safety. The machine has lift arms that are extendable, allowing the work tool to be pushed without operating the tracks. These features give the tool carrier the ability to fully operate in narrow spaces and with limited operation of the tracks, resulting in more efficient use and less ground damage than traditional skid loaders.

  • Patent number: 7663373
Abstract: A method and system for identifying a location of a magnetic field source. A total magnetic field is measured during a calibration routine prior to a drilling procedure. During the drilling procedure, a magnetic field measurement is obtained. Using a ratio of the measured magnetic field and the calibrated field, a set of possible angles and distances is calculated. After the source is advanced a known distance, a second magnetic field measurement is obtained. A second ratio is calculated and a second set of possible angles and distances is calculated. The relative location of the source is then determined using the first set and second set of values, along with the known distance and a pitch angle of the source.

Abstract: A method for noise signal analysis and communication with an underground transmitter. The method comprises the steps of measuring a noise floor when no signal is transmitted from a transmitter, detecting a signal when the transmitter is transmitting, and estimating the noise free component of the signal by removing the noise floor measurement. The measurement of the noise floor and detecting the signal from the transmitter may be done using a root mean square technique. The noise floor measurement can be removed from the measured signal by subtracting the noise floor measurement from the measured signal or alternatively by calculating the square root of the difference between the square of the measured signal and the square of the noise floor measurement. The noise estimation technique may be used in connection with, a differential phased shift keying communication scheme or other modulation techniques.
