Patent number: 8395042Abstract: Efficient photovoltaic devices with quantum dots are provided. Quantum dots have numerous desirable properties that can be used in solar cells, including an easily selected bandgap and Fermi level. In particular, the size and composition of a quantum dot can determine its bandgap and Fermi level. By precise deposition of quantum dots in the active layer of a solar cell, bandgap gradients can be present for efficient sunlight absorption, exciton dissociation, and charge transport. Mismatching Fermi levels are also present between adjacent quantum dots, allowing for built-in electric fields to form and aid in charge transport and the prevention of exciton recombination.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 2009Date of Patent: March 12, 2013Assignees: The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior University, Honda Motor Co., LtdInventors: Neil Dasgupta, Friedrich B. Patent number: 8394599Abstract: The present invention provides an approach for the simultaneous determination of the activation states of a plurality of proteins in single cells. This approach permits the rapid detection of heterogeneity in a complex cell population based on activation states, and the identification of cellular subsets that exhibit correlated changes in activation within the cell population. Moreover, this approach allows the correlation of cellular activities or properties. In addition, the use of potentiators of cellular activation allows for characterization of such pathways and cell populations.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 2010Date of Patent: March 12, 2013Assignee: The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior UniversityInventors: Omar D. Patent number: 8395696Abstract: Image data is processed to facilitate focusing and/or optical correction. According to an example embodiment of the present invention, an imaging arrangement collects light data corresponding to light passing through a particular focal plane. The light data is collected using an approach that facilitates the determination of the direction from which various portions of the light incident upon a portion of the focal plane emanate from. Using this directional information in connection with value of the light as detected by photosensors, an image represented by the light is selectively focused and/or corrected.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 2011Date of Patent: March 12, 2013Assignee: The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior UniversityInventors: Yi-Ren Ng, Patrick M. Patent number: 8394914Abstract: Poly(glycolide) polymers are disclosed. The polymers generally include a glycolide-based polymer backbone that includes one or more functional groups such as alkynyl groups, hydrophilic organic triazole groups, hydrophobic organic triazole groups (also including amphiphilic organic triazole groups), di-triazole organic crosslinking groups, and triazole-substituted drug derivatives. The alkynyl groups provide reactive sites for further functionalization of the polymer, for example by reaction with azide derivatives. The polymers can further encapsulate a drug for delivery to a patient (i.e., as compared to drug derivatives that are covalently attached to the polymer). The polymers can be in the form of thermodynamically stable unimolecular micelles or crosslinked nanoparticles. The polymer compositions are completely biodegradable and hold great potential for use in biomedical applications.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 2009Date of Patent: March 12, 2013Assignee: Board of Trustees of Michigan State UniversityInventors: Gregory L. Patent number: 8396319Abstract: Shadow is an inseparable aspect of all natural scenes. When there are multiple light sources or multiple reflections several different shadows may overlap at the same location and create complicated patterns. Shadows are a potentially good source of information about a scene if the shadow regions can be properly identified and segmented. However, shadow region identification and segmentation is a difficult task and improperly identified shadows often interfere with machine vision tasks like object recognition and tracking. A shadow separation and contrast enhancement method based on the polarization of light is provided. Polarization information of scenes is captured by a polarization-sensitive camera and the scenes are processed to effectively separate shadows from different light sources.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 2007Date of Patent: March 12, 2013Assignee: The Trustees Of The University Of PennsylvaniaInventors: Edward N. Patent number: 8394584Abstract: Provided are methods for detecting, characterizing or separating DNA based on methylation. Heterogeneous DNA populations are separated based on DNA methylation by providing a membrane having a nanopore through which an electric field is applied. DNA of interest is introduced, and for a given threshold voltage across the nanopore, only DNA having a methylation parameter of interest may transit the pore, thereby facilitating detection, characterization, or separation of DNA based on methylation. Patent number: 8394251Abstract: Isotachophoresis (ITP) is exploited to control various aspects of chemical reactions. In a first aspect, at least one of the reactants of a chemical reaction is confined to an ITP zone, but the resulting product of the chemical reaction is separated from this ITP zone by the ITP process. In a second aspect, one or more reactants of a chemical reaction are confined to an ITP zone, and one or more other reactants of the chemical reaction are not confined to this ITP zone. In a third aspect, ITP is employed to confine at least one reactant of a chemical reaction to an ITP zone, and at least one reactant of the chemical reaction is delivered to the ITP zone in two or more discrete doses. These aspects are especially relevant to performing polymerase chain reactions using chemical denaturants as opposed to thermal cycling.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 2009Date of Patent: March 12, 2013Assignee: The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior UniversityInventors: Juan G.
