Abstract: An improved heated fluidized bed reactor and method for the production of high purity polycrystalline silicon by silane pyrolysis wherein silicon seed particles are heated in an upper heating zone of the reactor and admixed with particles in a lower zone, in which zone a silane-containing gas stream, having passed through a lower cooled gas distribution zone not conducive to silane pyrolysis, contacts the heated seed particles whereon the silane is heterogeneously reduced to silicon.
Abstract: This invention is directed to photocopolymerizable compositions comprising an epoxide containing two or more epoxy groups, a poly (active hydrogen) organic compound having at least some primary hydroxyl content and a photoinitiator. The cured coating compositions exhibit fast cure rates, good water resistance and can have utility as automotive finishes, can finishes, appliance finishes, general metal finishes, printing inks, adhesives and the like.
Abstract: A polysiloxane-polyoxyalkylene composition of the nominal formula: ##STR1## wherein R is an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms and R.degree., R', R" and R'" are individually monovalent polyoxyalkylene polyethers attached to the silicon atom through a difunctional link; and,the polyoxyalkylene of R' is a poly(oxyethylene-oxypropylene) ether which contains 20% to 60% oxyethylene by weight and has an average molecular weight of from about 3,000 to about 5,500;the polyoxyalkylene of R" is a poly(oxyethylene-oxypropylene) ether which contains 20% to 60% oxyethylene by weight and has an average molecular weight of from about 800 to about 2,900; andthe polyoxyalkylene of R'" is a polyoxypropylene polyether having an average molecular weight from about 130 to about 1200;R.degree.

Abstract: A process for extrusion comprising extruding, under conditions which will provide a shrink film, a linear low density copolymer of ethylene and at least one alpha-olefin having 3 to 6 carbon atoms, said copolymer having (i) a density in the range of about 0.915 to about 0.932 grams per cubic centimeter; (ii) a weight average molecular weight of at least about 250,000, (iii) a ratio of weight average molecular weight to number average molecular weight of at least about 6; and (iv) a copolymer species with a molecular weight of at least about 500,000 in an amount of at least about 8 percent by weight based on the weight of the copolymer.

Abstract: A vessel for handling a heated substance such as molten materials, and a method for cooling such a vessel, the vessel having fluid cooled containment means comprising inner and outer walls defining a space therebetween; an inlet into the space for a pressurized fluid coolant; means for spraying the coolant against the inner wall to maintain a desired temperature at the inner wall; an outlet for removing the spent coolant; and means for establishing and maintaining a pressure differential between the space and the coolant outlet to force the spent coolant out of the space through the outlet. The preferred embodiment of the invention is utilized as a roof or side wall for a metallurgical vessel, for example, an electric arc furnace.
Abstract: A process for the incorporation of a copolymer of at least one liquid alpha-olefin or diolefin comonomer having at least 7 carbon atoms into a polymer matrix comprising:(a) in a first reaction zone, contacting at least one alpha-olefin having 2 to 6 carbon atoms with a catalyst adapted for the polymerization thereof in such a manner that a granular polymer matrix selected from the group consisting of (i) a homopolymer of ethylene or propylene and (ii) a copolymer of ethylene or propylene and at least one alpha-olefin having 2 to 6 carbon atoms is formed in admixture with active catalyst;(b) admixing the mixture from step (a) with at least one liquid alpha-olefin or diolefin comonomer having at least 7 carbon atoms to at least partially cost the polymer matrix; and(c) introducing the mixture from step (b) into the first reaction zone or a second reaction zone together with at least one alpha-olefin having 2 to 6 carbon atoms in such a manner that polymerization is effected in the gas phase.
Abstract: Described herein are compositions suitable for photocopolymerization comprising (a) an epoxide containing two or more epoxy groups, and (b) a hydroxyl substituted cycloaliphatic monoepoxide. The composition may additionally contain a poly (active hydrogen) organic compound and/or a photoinitiator. A coating produced from such a composition has a good combination of properties.

Abstract: A spray cooling system for cooling a furnace for the melting or treatment of molten metal, and particularly the roof and/or sidewall of electric-arc, plasma-arc and ladle furnaces. Other types of metal treating furnaces and accessory equipment may also be cooled with the system of the invention. In the invention, spray headers and pipes (14, 16, 18) supply coolant to spray nozzles (70) distributed within a coolant space in a roof structure (10) to spray coolant against the working plates (22) of the roof. The spray pipes and headers also comprise part of the framework for the roof, resulting in a simple, lightweight, one-piece structure. A pump (56) is connected to evacuate the coolant from the coolant space, and thermocouples (58) are embedded in the working plates to monitor their temperature and operate controls to adjust the flow rate so that only the amount of coolant necessary to maintain a desired temperature is supplied to the roof.

Abstract: A process to absorb more than one component from a gaseous stream comprising passing the gaseous stream sequentially in contact with separate and distinct adsorbent masses wherein not all of the more strongly sorbed component is removed in a single adsorbent mass. The process exhibits improved overall efficiency over conventional multicomponent adsorption processes.
Abstract: This invention is directed to photocopolymerizable compositions comprising a poly (active hydrogen) organic compound, a photoinitiator and, as a reactive diluent, a substituted cycloaliphatic monoepoxide. The photocopolymerizable compositions have low viscosity and can be applied to suitable substrates by conventional methods and, after curing, provide excellent pressure sensitive and heat-activated adhesive coatings.

Abstract: An improved pressure swing adsorption process enables the more readily adsorbable component of a feed gas to be economically recovered, e.g. nitrogen from air. The more readily absorbable component is used as copurge at upper adsorption pressure, and less readily adsorbable component is used for countercurrent purge at subatmospheric desorption pressure and for initial repressurization in a countercurrent backfilling step.
Abstract: Permeable membranes are operated, under reduced demand conditions, by reducing feed flow and the partial pressure driving force across the membrane, using the installed surface area, with product purity and/or flow being reduced. The driving force is reduced by reducing feed pressure and/or increasing permeate side pressure.
