Abstract: Microbial consortia exert great influence over the physiology of humans, animals, plants, and ecosystems. However, difficulty in controlling their composition and population dynamics have limited their application in medicine, agriculture, biotechnology, and the environment. The approach disclosed herein provides an effective method to dynamically control population compositions in microbial consortia, which we demonstrate in the context of co-culture fermentations for chemical production. Co-culture fermentations can improve chemical production from complex biosynthetic pathways over monocultures by distributing enzymes across multiple strains, thereby reducing metabolic burden, overcoming endogenous regulatory mechanisms, or exploiting natural traits of different microbial species. However, stabilizing and optimizing microbial sub-populations for maximal chemical production remains a major obstacle in the field.

Abstract: Computer vision systems and methods for time-aware needle tip localization in two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound images are provided. A consecutive fused image sequence, derived from fusion of the enhanced frames and the corresponding B-mode frames, is processed by a time-aware neural network which includes a unified convolutional neural network (CNN) and a long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network. The CNN acts as a feature extractor, with stacked convolutional layers which progressively create a hierarchy of more abstract features. The LSTM models temporal dependencies in time-series data. The system learns spatiotemporal features associated with needle tip movement, for example, needle tip appearance and trajectory information, and successfully localizes the needle tip in the presence of abrupt intensity changes and motion artifacts.

Abstract: A new on chip system, named Acoustic Gym, to apply a surface acoustic wave (SAW) has been developed to control the swimming exercise of a large number of small animals such as C. elegans and Zebra fish, at desired intensities and durations. The SAW device consists of a circular chamber filled with fluid, which is placed in the center between a pair of offset interdigital transducers (IDTs) that are deposited on a piezoelectric substrate. Upon actuation from a radio frequency (RF) source, the SAW is generated and propagates along the substrate towards the microchamber. Once the SAW reaches the chamber, it induces an acoustic streaming in the fluid inside the chamber to stimulate swimming exercise of small animals. The streaming velocity can be precisely controlled via the RF signal input power, thus regulating the duration and intensity of exercise of the animals.
