  • Patent number: 10472258
Abstract: A carrier gas is directed through a humidification chamber in a humidifier, where the carrier gas flow is directly contacted with a feed liquid to humidify the carrier gas with water evaporated from the feed liquid, producing a humidified gas flow. The humidified gas flow is then compressed in a compressor and then directed through a dehumidification chamber in a dehumidifier, where the compressed humidified gas flow is dehumidified to condense water from the compressed humidified gas flow. The dehumidified gas flow is then expanded in an expander, wherein the expansion of the dehumidified gas flow generates motion (e.g., rotation of a shaft), and wherein the motion generated in the expander is transferred to the compressor, where the motion compresses the humidified gas flow. Heat is also removed from the expanded dehumidified gas flow and transferred to compressed dehumidified gas flow upstream from the expander.

  • Patent number: 10474002
Abstract: In one aspect, a method is provided for generating supercontinuum laser pulses within a continuous mid-infrared spectral range in a chalcogenide material. This method includes focusing an input laser beam of femtosecond pulses with a pulse energy higher than 10 microjoule along an optical path of the input laser beam; placing a chalcogenide material at a selected location along the optical path of the laser beam so that the laser intensity at the chalcogenide material is sufficiently high to cause nonlinear optical absorption that causes conversion of input optical energy into supercontinuum laser pulses of a pulse energy at or above a microjoule level at optical wavelengths within a broad continuous mid-infrared spectral range without damaging the chalcogenide material; and simultaneously moving the chalcogenide material laterally relative to the input laser beam to avoid damage to the chalcogenide material.

  • Patent number: 10473152
Abstract: A linear element with two stable points, it can be used as trust element allows for change in length. It can transform structure from one shape to another thus allowing for morphable configuration. A new model is presented herein for a linear bi-stable compliant mechanism and design guidelines for its use. The mechanism is based on the crank-slider mechanism. This model takes into account the first mode of buckling and post-buckling behavior of a compliant segment to describe the mechanism's hi-stable behavior. The kinetic and kinematic equations, derived from the Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model, were solved numerically and are represented in plots. This representation allows the generation of step-by-step design guidelines. Because different applications may have different input requirements, two different design approaches are described herein with different parameters subsets as inputs.

  • Patent number: 10474690
Abstract: The present invention introduces the development of a flexible CPU-AP (Computer Processing Unit-Automata Processor) computing infrastructure for mining hierarchical patterns based on Apriori algorithm. A novel automaton design strategy, called linear design, is described to generate automata for matching and counting hierarchical patterns and apply it on SPM (Sequential Pattern Mining). In addition, another novel automaton design strategy, called reduction design, is described for the disjunctive rule matching (DRM) and counting. The present invention shows performance improvement of AP SPM and DRM solutions and broader capability over multicore and GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) implementations of GSP SPM, and shows that AP SPM and DRM solutions outperform state-of-the-art SPM algorithms SPADE and PrefixSpan (especially for larger datasets).

  • Patent number: 10471648
Abstract: A functionally graded shape memory polymer (SMP) that has a range of transition temperatures that are spatially distributed in a gradient fashion within one single article. The SMP is formed by post-curing a pre-cured glassy SMP in a linear temperature gradient that imposes different vitrification temperature limits at different positions along the gradient. Utilizing indentation-based surface shape memory coupled with optical measurements of photoelastic response, the capability of this material to respond over a wide range of thermal triggers is correlated with the graded glass transition behavior. This new class of SMP offers great potential for such applications as passive temperature sensing and precise control of shape evolution during a thermally triggered shape recovery.

  • Patent number: 10475988
Abstract: In one embodiment, a spin torque device uses a thick (e.g., >1 nm, and preferably >=2-6 nm) ferrimagnet (FIM) layer, instead of a thin (e.g., <1-2 nm) FM layer in the device's stack. The FIM layer may be composed of a cobalt-gadolinium (Co—Gd) alloy, cobalt-terbium (Co—Tb) multilayers, or other materials that provide anti-ferromagnetic coupling between two sub-lattices. Negative exchange interaction between the two sub-lattices of the FIM may allow for low current switching. High thermal stability and external magnetic field resistance may also be achieved.
