  • Publication number: 20190128668
Abstract: A method for determining a mixed layer depth (MLD) in a body of water includes receiving a vertical high resolution profile corresponding to the body of water. Additionally, a profile segment corresponding to a portion of the profile between a surface of the body of water and a bottom of a thermocline is selected to be analyzed. Further, a depth within the profile segment corresponding to MLD is identified. For example, the MLD in Gulf of Aden is analyzed using vertical high resolution profiles of both temperature and density. The method produces MLD estimates for more than 95% of the profiles and overcomes major limitations of conventional methods.

  • Publication number: 20190125831
Abstract: As microbial drug-resistance increases, there is a critical need for new classes of compounds to combat infectious diseases. The Ixodes scapularis tick antifreeze glycoprotein, IAFGP, functions as an anti-infective agent against diverse bacteria including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Recombinant IAFGP and a peptide, P1, described herein and derived from this protein, bind to microbes and alter biofilm formation. Transgenic iafgp-expressing flies and mice challenged with bacteria, as well as wild-type animals administered IAFGP or P1, were resistant to infection, septic shock, or biofilm development on implanted biomaterials. Antifreeze protein controls bacterial infection and present new therapeutic strategies to counter pathogens.

  • Publication number: 20190126269
Abstract: A lab-on-a-chip (LOC) for the biomimetic study of the multicellular interactions of bone cells includes a PDMS substrate and cap, which together form one or more wells that are fluidly coupled by tubes. The wells are configured to support various bone cells and related cellular support substrates therein, while the tubes allow conditioned medium (CM), including soluble signals, and various other co-factors to be communicated among the various wells. By controlling the configuration among and between various bone cells in the wells, the temporal and spatial limitations associated with traditional in vivo bone tissue models is removed. In addition, the LOC enables a particular research objective to be studied by allowing the user to configure the arrangement of the wells/tubes of the LOC, so as to control the manner in which bone cell soluble signals, bone cell contact, and bone cell matrix interaction interplay.
