Patent number: 9707257Abstract: Described is a unique class of antiviral molecule that can be applied to control and eliminate HIV infection in patients using myeloablation therapies and replenishment with transformed bone marrow stem cells programmed to express the antiviral molecule. These anti-viral molecules target the HIV genome in a highly conserved domain, and when expressed in cells prior to infection will cause the cell to die upon infection with HIV. Cell death insures no proliferation of new virus. Reconstituting the immune system with cells expressing these antivirals prevents re-establishment of HIV infection from reservoirs in the re-established lymphocyte and macrophage populations. Over time, reservoirs will be depleted entirely, effectively eliminating the virus. In effect, this new type of antiviral can be used to cure HIV infections.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 2011Date of Patent: July 18, 2017Assignee: The University of Notre DameInventor: Malcolm James Fraser, Jr.

Patent number: 9709745Abstract: A delay line interferometer comprising an optical waveguide having a distributed Bragg reflector, e.g. Bragg grating, fabricated therein. The distributed Bragg reflector has a refractive index modulation with a period variation ?(z) along its length z that is arranged to output in transmission an output optical signal fout(t) in response to a input optical signal fin(t), wherein the output optical signal fout(t) is the result of temporal interference between one or more time-delayed replicas of the input optical signal fin(t). In other words, the distributed Bragg reflector is operable to generate and permit temporal interference between two or more time-delayed replicas of the input optical signal fin(t). The invention may thus mimic the behaviour of one or more MZIs.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 2014Date of Patent: July 18, 2017Assignee: Huazhong University of Science and TechnologyInventors: Xuewen Shu, Miguel Angel Preciado

Patent number: 9711126Abstract: The subject matter described herein includes an approach for wave-based sound propagation suitable for large, open spaces spanning hundreds of meters, with a small memory footprint. The scene is decomposed into disjoint rigid objects. The free-field acoustic behavior of each object is captured by a compact per-object transfer-function relating the amplitudes of a set of incoming equivalent sources to outgoing equivalent sources. Pairwise acoustic interactions between objects are cornuted analytically, yielding compact inter-object transfer functions. The global sound field accounting for all orders of interaction is computed using these transfer functions. The runtime system uses fast summation over the outgoing equivalent source amplitudes for all objects to auralize the sound field at a moving listener in real-time. We demonstrate realistic acoustic effects such as diffraction, low-passed sound behind obstructions, focusing, scattering, high-order reflections, and echoes, on a variety of scenes.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2013Date of Patent: July 18, 2017Assignee: The University of North Carolina at Chapel HillInventors: Ravish Mehra, Dinesh Manocha
