Abstract: A system and related devices for continuous and real-time monitoring and detection of head impact and corresponding trauma. The system may include a passive sensor mounted to a subject's tooth using dental hardware or adhesive so as to harness the firm coupling between the subject's tooth and cranium. With such firm coupling established, the impact data measured by the tooth-mounted sensor can be manipulated, through the use of a transfer function, by external processors to determine and communicate the impact experienced by the subject's head. The system is configured for use with an external power source whereby the passive tooth-mounted sensor is activated by means of a wireless transfer circuit such as an inductive power transfer circuit or an ultrasound power transfer circuit. The wireless activation of the powerless interior sensor system provides compatibility with multiple external power configurations, thereby enabling efficacious and continuous monitoring of the subject.

Abstract: Diagnostic systems, methods, and devices employing low-cost handheld components are disclosed herein. A diagnostic system can include a diagnostic device that is configured to perform one or more assays on a fluid sample, such as a whole blood sample, in one or more microfluidic channels or chambers. The diagnostic device can move the fluid sample into or through the one or more microfluidic channels or chambers without using any electrical power, for example, using manual actuation to generate a positive or negative pressure within the diagnostic device. The diagnostic device can have a connector for interfacing with a separate handheld unit that can provide power and data processing. For example, the separate handheld unit can be a smartphone or PDA, and the connector can interface with an existing input/output port of the unit to draw power and/or transmit data.

Abstract: Provided herein are methods and systems pertaining to sequencing units of analytes using nanopores. In general, arresting constructs are used to modify an analyte such that the modified analyte pauses in the opening of a nanopore. During such a pause, an ion current level is obtained that corresponds to a unit of the analyte. After altering the modified analyte such that the modified analyte advances through the opening, another arresting construct again pauses the analyte, allowing for a second ion current level to be obtained that represents a second unit of the analyte. This process may be repeated until each unit of the analyte is sequenced. Systems for performing such methods are also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20170229737
Abstract: The viscosity of various ionic liquids (IL), the solvent tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (G4), and their mixtures, with or without lithium salts, were measured experimentally. Various compositions were studied spectroscopically. Detailed analysis reveals that G4 preferentially solvates cations, leading to a reduction in the interaction energy between cations and anions and a subsequent enhancement in anion mobility. Diffusivity and ionic conductivity of certain compositions were improved at G4 mole fractions below levels required for a “solvate ionic liquid”. When an IL was combined with low amounts of a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio of G4 and lithium salt, the viscosity of composition remained constant and ion mobility increased.
