Abstract: Embodiments of processes for producing propylene utilize a dual catalyst system comprising a mesoporous silica catalyst impregnated with metal oxide and a mordenite framework inverted (MFI) structured silica catalyst downstream of the mesoporous silica catalyst, where the mesoporous silica catalyst includes a pore size distribution of at least 2.5 nm to 40 nm and a total pore volume of at least 0.600 cm3/g, and the MFI structured silica catalyst has a total acidity of 0.001 mmol/g to 0.1 mmol/g. The propylene is produced from the butene stream via metathesis by contacting the mesoporous silica catalyst and subsequent cracking by contacting the MFI structured silica catalyst.

Abstract: A silicon-based anode comprising silicon, a carbon coating that coats the surface of the silicon, a polyvinyl acid that binds to at least a portion of the silicon, and vinylene carbonate that seals the interface between the silicon and the polyvinyl acid. Because of its properties, polyvinyl acid binders offer improved anode stability, tunable properties, and many other attractive attributes for silicon-based anodes, which enable the anode to withstand silicon cycles of expansion and contraction during charging and discharging.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a functional material having the function of detecting a predetermined substance or the like present in a sample with high accuracy even when the amount of the sample is small, and a method for producing the functional material. The functional material includes a channel part 10 that allows a liquid to pass therethrough, and the channel part 10 is made of a water-permeable material 11 containing a water-impermeable material 12. The water-impermeable material 12 is placed between pieces of the water-permeable material 11, and therefore voids 10h can be formed between the water-impermeable material 12 and the water-permeable material 11. That is, a network of the voids 10h can be formed in the channel part 10. A liquid sample supplied to the channel part 10 is allowed to move while being allowed to penetrate into the voids 10h.

Abstract: Described herein is the generation of optimized H1N1 influenza HA polypeptides for eliciting a broadly reactive immune response to H1N1 influenza virus isolates. The optimized HA polypeptides were developed through a series of HA protein alignments, and subsequent generation of consensus sequences, based on selected H1N1 viruses isolated from 1918-2012. Provided herein are optimized H1N1 HA polypeptides, and compositions, fusion proteins and VLPs comprising the HA polypeptides. Further provided are codon-optimized nucleic acid sequences encoding the HA polypeptides. Methods of eliciting an immune response against influenza virus in a subject are also provided by the present disclosure.

Abstract: Embodiments of an sequential state element (SSE) capable of providing triple modular redundant (TMR) correction is disclosed. The SSE has a setup stage and a feedback stage. The setup stage is configured to generate an output bit signal having an output bit state while a clock signal is in the first clock state. The setup stage also generates a feedback input bit signal as feedback of the output bit state. However, the feedback stage is capable of providing TMR correction without this feedback signal. Instead, the feedback stage utilizes the second feedback input bit signal and a third feedback input bit signal from two other SSEs. Since TMR correction can be provided with just the second feedback input bit signal and the third feedback input bit signal, the power and area consumed by the SSE is reduced.

Abstract: It was found that bacteria belonging to the genus Clostridium induce accumulation of regulatory T cells (Treg cells) in the colon. Moreover, the present inventors found that regulatory T cells (Treg cells) induced by from these bacteria suppressed proliferation of effector T-cells. From these findings, the present inventors found that the use of bacteria belonging to the genus Clostridium or a physiologically active substance derived therefrom made it possible to induce proliferation or accumulation of regulatory T cells (Treg cells), and further to suppress immune functions.

Abstract: A process for making an iron oxide impregnated carbon nanotube membrane. In this template-free and binder-free process, iron oxide nanoparticles are homogeneously dispersed onto the surface of carbon nanotubes by wet impregnation. The amount of iron oxide nanoparticles loaded on the carbon nanotubes range from 0.25-80% by weight per total weight of the doped carbon nanotubes. The iron oxide doped carbon nanotubes are then pressed to form a carbon nanotube disc which is then sintered at high temperatures to form a mixed matrix membrane of iron oxide nanoparticles homogeneously dispersed across a carbon nanotube matrix. Methods of characterizing porosity, hydrophilicity and fouling potential of the carbon nanotube membrane are also described.
