Abstract: A computer-implemented method for the label-free classification of cells using image cytometry is provided. In some exemplary embodiments of the computer implemented method, the classification is the classification of the cells, such as individual cells, into a phase of the cell cycle or by cell type. A user computing device receives as an input one or more images of a cell obtained from a image cytometer. The user computing device extracts features form the one or more images, such as brightfield and/or darkfield images. The user computing device classifies the cell in the one or more images based on the extracted features using a cell classifier. The user computing device then outputs the class label of the cell, as defined by the classifier.

Abstract: A DC/DC power converter provides high voltage gain using integrated boost and voltage multiplier (VM) stages. The boost cell operates according to a switching sequence to alternately energize and discharge a primary winding. A VM cell electrically coupled to the primary winding of the boost cell charges a multiplier capacitor to a DC output voltage greater than the input voltage when the primary winding is energized and discharges the multiplier capacitor when primary winding is discharged.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are biomaterials that include a plurality of fibers embedded in a matrix of hydrogel material. The plurality of fibers and hydrogel material are formed during one process step. In one embodiment, the plurality of fibers and hydrogel materials are formed using a multilayer coextrusion process step. Additional process steps can be performed to form a tissue engineering scaffold. Such a scaffold can be used to grow biological matter. In one embodiment, stem cells are applied to the scaffold to grow biological material. Process steps can be controlled to determine certain mechanical properties of the resulting biomaterial. In one embodiment, the process steps are controlled to determine the stiffness of the resulting biomaterial. In such an embodiment, the stiffness of the resulting biological material determines physical properties of the biological material grown on the scaffold.

Abstract: An object is to provide a thermotolerant yeast capable of assimilating xylose to produce ethanol or a mutant strain thereof and a method for producing ethanol by assimilation of xylose. There is used a yeast, Kluyveromyces marxianus strain No. 21 (accession number: NITE BP-01739), or a mutant strain thereof that has xylose assimilation ability and ethanol production ability when cultured at 30° C. under aerobic conditions using a culture medium containing xylose as a sugar source. Also performed is a method for producing ethanol, comprising culturing the yeast or the mutant strain thereof under aerobic conditions using a culture medium containing xylose as a sugar source.

The driving force for rotation of the moving member (18) relative to the base unit (14) is provided by a pair of antagonistically operating shape memory alloy (SMA) wires (48, 50) and transmitted via a torsional spring (56). An endoscope, or a snake-like robot (66), may include one or more of the actuators (12).
Abstract: A smart sensor network for power grid health monitoring includes a plurality of spaced sensors that are magnetically coupled to the power transmission line to be monitored. The sensors include a signal injection unit and a signal sensing unit. As such, one of the sensors acts to inject, via its signal injection unit, a high frequency signal through the magnetic coupling into the power transmission line, while sensors on either side of the signal injecting sensor act to block the injected signal, which is then detected by the signal sensing unit of the injecting sensor, and is used to measure the impedance of the power transmission line segment being analyzed. Based on the difference between a pre-measured impedance of the power transmission line being monitored and the actual impedance value of the power transmission line being measured by the sensor, the health of the power line can be obtained.
