Patent number: 8209164Abstract: A translation graph is created using a plurality of reference sources that include translations between a plurality of different languages. Each entry in a source is used to create a wordsense entry, and each new word in a source is used to create a wordnode entry. A pair of wordnode and wordsense entries corresponds to a translation. In addition, a probability is determined for each wordsense entry and is decreased for each translation entry that includes more than a predefined number of translations into the same language. Bilingual translation entries are removed if subsumed by a multilingual translation entry. Triangulation is employed to identify pairs of common wordsense translations between a first, second, and third language. Translations not found in reference sources can also be inferred from the data comprising the translation graph. The translation graph can then be used for searches of a data collection in different languages.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 2007Date of Patent: June 26, 2012Assignee: University of WashingtonInventors: Oren Etzioni, Kobi Reiter, Marcus Sammer, Michael Schmitz, Stephen Soderland

Patent number: 8207794Abstract: The phase locked loop has a phase-frequency detector (PFD), a loop filter (LF), a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), and a 3-stage frequency divider. The PFD receives a reference signal and a feedback signal to determine phase and frequency errors. The LF), coupled to the phase-frequency detector, filters the phase and frequency errors to generate a control voltage. The VCO, coupled to the loop filter, generates a VCO output signal according to the control voltage. The 3-stage frequency divider, coupled to the voltage controlled oscillator, divides the frequency of the VCO output signal 3 times to generate the feedback signal. The 3-stage frequency divider comprises three cascaded frequency dividers with different rangers of operating frequencies.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 2010Date of Patent: June 26, 2012Assignees: Mediatek Inc., National Taiwan UniversityInventors: Jri Lee, Ming-Chung Liu

Patent number: 8207992Abstract: Medical imaging often involves the collective use of information presented in multiple images of an individual, such as images generated through different imaging modalities (X-ray, CT, PET, etc.) The use of a composite of these images may involve image registration to adjust for the variable position and orientation discrepancies of the individual during imaging. However, registration may be complicated by soft tissue deformation between images, and implementations (particularly pure software implementations) of the mathematical models used in image registration may be computationally complex and may require up to several hours. Hardware architectures are presented that apply the mathematical techniques in an accelerated manner, thereby providing near-realtime image registration that may be of particular use for the short timeframe requirements of surgical environments.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 2008Date of Patent: June 26, 2012Assignee: University of Maryland, BaltimoreInventors: Raj Shekhar, Omkar Dandekar

Patent number: 8206299Abstract: A method for using high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to treat neurological structures to achieve a desired therapeutic effect. Depending on the dosage of HIFU applied, it can have a reversible or irreversible effect on neural structures. For example, a relatively high dose of HIFU can be used to permanently block nerve function, to provide a non-invasive alternative to severing a nerve to treat severe spasticity. Relatively lower doses of HIFU can be used to reversibly block nerve function, to alleviate pain, to achieve an anesthetic effect, or to achieve a cosmetic effect. Where sensory nerves are not necessary for voluntary function, but are involved in pain associated with tumors or bone cancer, HIFU can be used to non-invasively destroy such sensory nerves to alleviate pain without drugs. Preferably, ultrasound imaging synchronized to the HIFU therapy is used to provide real-time ultrasound image guided HIFU therapy of neural structures.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 2010Date of Patent: June 26, 2012Assignee: University of WashingtonInventors: Jessica L. Patent number: 8208545Abstract: A pixel-based video encoding apparatus includes a block prediction unit, a residual image generation unit, a pixel prediction unit, and an entropy-coding unit. The block prediction unit performs temporal or spatial prediction between a reference image and a current image in order to generate a prediction block corresponding to a current block to be encoded. The residual image generation unit generates a residual image block composed of a residual signal corresponding to a difference between pixels of the prediction block and pixels of the current block. The pixel prediction unit determines whether to apply differential pulse coded modulation to each of pixels of the residual image block based on a rate distortion optimization value. The entropy-coding unit performs entropy-coding on the residual image block.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 2006Date of Patent: June 26, 2012Assignees: Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, Kwangwoon University Research Institute for Industry CooperationInventors: Jeong-Il Seo, Se-Yoon Jeong, Kyu-Heon Kim, Kyeong-Ok Kang, Jin-Woo Hong, Dong-Gyu Sim, Yung-Lyul Lee, Seoung-Jun Oh, Chang-Beom Ahn, Jung-Hak Nam
