Abstract: A system and method of updating codes stored in a controller based on the two-channel protocol standard are described. The updating system includes an application program unit, a kernel buffer, and a general purpose input/output control module. The application program unit receives the updating command and the code file via the network. The kernel buffer downloads the code file based on the updating command from the application program unit and stores the code file into the kernel buffer. The two-channel control module reads the code file stored in the kernel buffer and converts the code file into a clock signal and a data signal. The general purpose input/output control module has a clock channel and a data channel for receiving the clock signal and the data signal and transmitting the clock signal and the data signal via the clock channel and the data channel, respectively, to the controller of the network storage apparatus for updating the original codes in the controller.

Abstract: The present invention is an inexpensive, hand-held, and easy to operate millimeter-wave detection device that employs a non-imaging sensor which radiates a pulse of millimeter waves of a certain amplitude and frequency towards a target located at a distance from the detection device. The sensor receives pulses of millimeter waves that are reflected from the target and generates a voltage waveform that is characteristic mainly of the target material, while other parameters such as distance to the target are known. The processor of the detection device measures both the peak voltage and the rate of increase of the voltage until it reaches the maximum. Using an algorithm stored in a software module, the deviation between the rate of the voltage rise and the peak voltage is compared with values of similar parameters for a number of test targets made of different materials that were previously collected and stored in a calibration table in the memory of the device. Abstract: System and methodologies for low-distortion index assignment for quantization are provided herein. Various aspects described herein utilize a graph theoretic approach for determining an index assignment mapping between a quantization codebook and a signal constellation by employing a variation of the subgraph isomorphism problem. The graph theoretic index assignment algorithms described herein allow efficient determination of index assignment mappings for both binary and non-binary quantization schemes. Further, the topological structure of a signal constellation can be exploited to simplify the set of subgraphs to be searched in select cases. Various aspects described herein can additionally be utilized to determine index assignment mappings for space-time block codes in a multiple-input multiple-output wireless communication system.

Abstract: SHE, a Starch Hydrolytic Enzyme active in maize endosperm (Zea mays), and the cDNA sequence encoding SHE are disclosed. The specificity of native, purified SHE is similar, in general terms, to previously known alpha-amylases. However, the activity of SHE toward amylopectin results in hydrolysis products that are distinctly different from those of other alpha-amylases. SHE, and its homologous equivalents in other plants such as rice, Arabidopsis, apple and potato, can be used in starch processing for generating different, e.g., larger sized, alpha-limit dextrins for industrial use, as compared to those generated by previously known alpha-amylases or other starch hydrolytic enzymes. In addition, modification of the expression of this enzyme in transgenic maize plants or in other transgenic organisms (including bacteria, yeast, and other plant species) can be useful for the generation of novel starch forms or altered starch metabolism.
