Patent number: 8704875Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus and method for generating a real-time stereoscopic image from depth map. According to the depth information of the image, a depth-image-based rendering (DIBR) algorithm is used to shift (or move) the position of the object in the image to generate the stereoscopic image with parallax. When the object is shifted (or moved) away from its original position, a hole will occur in the original position. Therefore an image inpainting algorithm is developed to fill the hole. In order to achieve the real-time application, a hardware architecture and method have been developed to accomplish the DIBR and image inpainting algorithm.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 2011Date of Patent: April 22, 2014Assignee: Chung Hua UniversityInventors: Fang-Hsuan Cheng, Yu-Wei Chang

Patent number: 8706422Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus are provided for determining whether a nucleic acid sequence imbalance exists within a biological sample. One or more cutoff values for determining an imbalance of, for example, the ratio of the two sequences (or sets of sequences) are chosen. The cutoff value may be determined based at least in part on the percentage of fetal DNA in a sample, such as maternal plasma, containing a background of maternal nucleic acid sequences. The cutoff value may also be determined based on an average concentration of a sequence per reaction. In one aspect, the cutoff value is determined from a proportion of informative wells that are estimated to contain a particular nucleic acid sequence, where the proportion is determined based on the above-mentioned percentage and/or average concentration. The cutoff value may be determined using many different types of methods, such as sequential probability ratio testing (SPRT).Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 2008Date of Patent: April 22, 2014Assignee: The Chinese University of Hong KongInventors: Yuk-Ming Dennis Lo, Rossa Wai Kwun Chiu, Kwan Chee Chan, Benny Chung Ying Zee, Ka Chun Chong

Patent number: 8702808Abstract: Bioresorbable scaffolds for bone engineering, such as repair of bone defects, particularly long bone defects, or augmentation of bone length are described. Scaffolds are porous and comprise multiple side channels. In one embodiment, scaffolds are made from layers of micro-filament meshes comprising polycaprolactone (PCL) or a PCL-composite sequentially laid in incremental 60 degrees of rotation to produce a 0/60/120 degree layering pattern, providing for the formation of interconnected pores. The scaffold can comprise a central channel filled, packed or infused with suitable agents such as bioactive agents. Furthermore, the scaffolds are stiff but yet fracture resistant and with sufficient bending, compressive and torsional strength suitable for bone engineering. The slow degradation of the scaffold is sufficient for the 3D matrix to maintain structure integrity and mechanical properties during the remodelling process.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 2009Date of Patent: April 22, 2014Assignees: Osteopore International PTE Ltd, Osteopore Korea Co. Patent number: 8703478Abstract: An apparatus and method for holding a membrane, screen or other flexible planar body in tension, while providing a conduit for water or other liquid to flow to the membrane being held. The membrane extends from inside a manifold body that carries the liquid, and the manifold body supports the membrane at one edge while the membrane is pulled in tension. Liquid pressure builds up inside the manifold body, preferably by entering a pressure chamber at the top of the manifold body. At a feeding pressure in the pressure chamber the liquid is distributed to the membrane for microbe growth. The liquid can be elevated to a higher, microbe-harvesting pressure by increasing the pressure in the pressure chamber, thereby deflecting a shim separating the pressure chamber from the membrane. The change in pressure is carried out by manually or automatically opening and closing a conventional water valve.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 2008Date of Patent: April 22, 2014Assignee: Ohio UniversityInventors: David J.
