  • Patent number: 5908171
Abstract: A method and apparatus in winding, wherein a number of separate rolls (13a, 13b, 13c, 13d, 13e, 13f) are formed side by side around separate roll spools (15a, 15b, 15c, 15d, 15e, 15f) placed one after the other while supported by support numbers (11, 12). In order to reduce the friction coefficient of the roll spools (15a, 15b, 15c, 15d, 15e, 15f) before, or at the same time as, the roll spools are placed in the winding position, the ends of the roll spools are treated with an agent that reduces the friction coefficient, or pieces of a material that has a low friction coefficient are placed at the end of the roll spools, and/or the axial thrust force between the roll spools is lowered by passing a pressurized medium through the spool locks.

  • Patent number: 5908536
Abstract: A paper or board machine and a method for passing a paper or board web from a forming section to a press section in a paper or board machine wherein the web is carried on a first wire in the forming section or transferred to a first wire from a forming wire of the forming section. The web that runs on the first wire is made to adhere in a transfer and pre-press zone to an outside face of a transfer belt which is substantially non-water-receiving. The pre-press zone includes an extended nip defined by an extended-nip roll and a smooth-faced press roll, the extended-nip roll having a hose mantle and a press shoe arranged in a loop of the hose mantle. After this pre-press zone, the web is separated substantially immediately from the wire and passed on support of the transfer belt onto the next press fabric in the press section and/or into the next press nip.

  • Patent number: 5899002
Abstract: The drying apparatus comprises two endless bands (1, 2) that are impermeable to air and that have a good thermal conductivity. A fibre web (5) runs between the bands (1, 2) with at least one felt or wire (3, 4). The metal band in contact with the fibre web (5) is heated with a pressure chamber (9) containing a pressure medium that is steam. Correspondingly, the metal band in contact with the felt or wire (3, 4) is cooled. The pressure chamber (9) is sealed against the first band (1) with a seal (9a). In association with the pressure chamber (9) there is a steam recovery chamber (18), where steam and condensate that escape from between the seal (9a) and the first band (1) can be recovered. The steam recovered from the steam recovery chamber (18) is supplied for further use with a means according to the arrangement.

  • Patent number: 5896813
Abstract: A gradient calender including two calender rolls arranged to form a calendering nip, at least one of the rolls being a hard-faced calender roll which is heatable to a high temperature whereby a web is passed through the calendering nip for hot calendering the web. At least one of the calender rolls is arranged to be loaded toward the calendering nip by a respective variable-crown support roll so that an auxiliary nip between the support roll and the respective calender roll and the calendering nip are in a common nip plane. Deflection of the calendering nip and the calender rolls is substantially prevented by the effect of the load produced by hydraulic loading devices arranged in the support roll.

  • Patent number: 5897476
Abstract: A variable-crown roll including a stationary roll axle, a tubular roll mantle rotatably mounted by its ends on the roll axle by end bearings and hydraulic loading shoes arranged between the roll mantle and the roll axle. The loading shoes act upon an inner face of the roll mantle in a direction toward a nip defined in part by the roll, are supported on the roll axle and are loaded by a hydraulic pressure medium. The nip pressure is profiled in the axial direction of the roll by regulating the pressure of the pressure medium passed into the loading shoes. The roll mantle is made of a fiber-reinforced composite material so that the stability of shape of the roll mantle in the direction of the circumference is good, i.e., it maintains its shape, and the rigidity in the axial direction is low, i.e., it is profitable.

  • Patent number: 5888354
Abstract: An arrangement and method for transferring a paper web in high-speed paper machines having a press section arranged between a web former and a dryer section. In the press section, there is one or more press nip zones dewatering the web, at least the last one of which is an extended nip through which at least two press fabrics that receive water are passed. The web is passed between the press fabrics through the last extended-nip zone so that the draining of water out of the web takes place through both faces of the web. After the last extended-nip zone, the web follows one of the fabrics passing through the last extended-nip zone by the effect of a difference in pressure avoiding rewetting of the web. The fabric carrying the web is passed through a gently loaded transfer nip zone in which the web is transferred onto a transfer surface more adhesive than the face of the fabric.

  • Patent number: 5878506
Abstract: An arrangement in an apparatus for drying a fiber web, in which apparatus the fiber web (5) is dried between two tight bands (1, 2) moving in the same direction and turning around turning rolls (6a, 6b, 7a, 7b). The first band (1) is heated by means of a pressure chamber (9) and the second band (2) is cooled by means of a water chamber (10). The fiber web (5) is led together with at least one felt or wire (3, 4) through a drying zone formed by the bands (1, 2) in such a way that the fiber web is in contact with the surface of the first band (1) and the felt or wire (3, 4) is between the fiber web (5) and the second band (2). The arrangement comprises means for supporting the wire or wires (3, 4) in such a way that the fiber web (5) is exposed to a compression pressure by the effect of the wire or wires (3, 4) substantially immediately upon coming into contact with the first band.

  • Patent number: 5876565
Abstract: A press section in a paper machine through which a paper web has a closed and supported draw and a method and arrangement for compensating for elongation of the web in an equalizing press nip in the press section. The press section has at least two successive separate nips and dewatering of the paper web is carried out at least in the first one of these nips, preferably between two press fabrics that receive water. The last press nip in a running direction of the web is the equalizing press nip which may be separate from the preceding nip and in which no substantial dewatering is performed. The web may be passed through the equalizing press nip from the preceding dewatering press nip on a transfer belt substantially non-water-receiving. After the equalizing nip, the elongation of the paper web in the machine direction, which elongation takes place in the equalizing nip, is compensated for by a difference in speed of the transfer belt.
