  • Patent number: 6083352
Abstract: A shoe press for applying pressure to a moving web of paper or the like includes a press shoe extending along a full width of the web being carried through a nip defined between the shoe and a backing member, a support for the shoe, and a plurality of articulated hydraulic loading cylinders arranged between the support and the shoe for urging the shoe toward the backing member to apply pressure to the web. Each loading cylinder includes a single piston and first and second cylinders attached to the shoe and to the support, respectively. The opposite end portions of the piston are slidably received within the cylinders so as to define working chambers in the cylinders which are pressurizable by hydraulic fluid for urging the two cylinders away from each other.

  • Patent number: 6080274
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling a multi-step screening apparatus (1) controls other accept, reject and dilution flows in relation to the flow measured in the accept channel (7a) of the first screening step (3a). Thus a simpler control unit (9) can be used and accept of higher quality can be obtained than before. The apparatus has a control unit (9) aranged to measure the flows of all accept, reject and dilution water channels (7a-7c, 5a, 5b, 11a, 11b) and to adjust the flow of the other channels on the basis of the flow of the accept channel of the first step.

  • Patent number: 6070340
Abstract: A dryer group with single-wire draw in the dryer section of a paper machine including heated drying cylinders having a smooth face against which a paper web to be dried is brought into direct contact, reversing cylinders and a drying-wire guided by guide rolls, the drying cylinders and the reversing cylinders in a loop whereby the drying cylinders are situated outside the wire loop and the reversing cylinders are situated in gaps between the drying cylinders and inside the wire loop of the drying wire. The drying cylinders consist of large cylinders and small cylinders, the diameter D of the large cylinders being larger than the diameter d of the small cylinders. The small cylinders are situated in gaps between adjacent pairs of large cylinders so that their centers of rotation are on a level substantially different from the level of the centers of rotation of the large cylinders.

  • Patent number: 6071381
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for preventing rewetting of a web in a former. Water is removed from the web (W) by means of dewatering members. The web (W) is formed by forming members and forming rolls on support of a wire loop/loops. The wire loop/loops (10) is/are guided by alignment, guide and/or suction rolls (11, 12). The web (W) supported by a wire (10) is passed by at least two vacuum boxes/chambers (16, 17) after the last suction roll (11). At least two vacuum boxes/chambers (16, 17) are fitted after the last suction roll (11). The web (W) and the wire (10) are arranged to be dewatered by means of a first vacuum box/chamber (16). The transport of moisture from the wire (10) back into the web (W) is prevented by means of a second vacuum box/chamber (17), and a vacuum (P.sub.1) in the first vacuum box/chamber (16) is higher than a vacuum (P.sub.2) in the second vacuum box/chamber (17).

  • Patent number: 6070655
Abstract: A heat exchanger, for use in particular in connection with the process outlets at paper, pulp and board mills, including substantially parallel tubes or equivalent arranged in a duct. An air flow that delivers heat passes through the tubes and an air flow that receives heat passes through gaps between the tubes in accordance with the cross-flow principle. The heat faces of the tubes are made larger at the side of the flow that receives heat by means of ribs, lamellae or equivalent, and an air that is moist, saturated, or near its saturation curve is used as the air flow that delivers heat in the heat exchanger.

  • Patent number: 6065222
Abstract: A dryer section of a paper machine which is provided with at least one intermediate calendering nip and includes several successively arranged wire groups. The dryer section primarily or exclusively has groups with single-wire draw in which heated drying cylinders are arranged in an upper row and reversing suction cylinders or reversing suction rolls are arranged in a lower row below the upper row. The groups with single-wire draw also have a drying wire which runs along a meandering path over the drying cylinders and reversing suction cylinders or rolls so that the reversing suction cylinders remain inside the loop of the drying wire. A calender roll is arranged in opposed relationship to a drying cylinder in one or more of the single-wire draw groups in a sector which the first face of the web is exposed to thereby define a calendering nip therewith.

  • Patent number: 6063449
Abstract: A method and apparatus for coating a moving web of paper or paperboard. The web to be coated is passed to a coater station, wherein a coat layer is applied to at least one surface of the web by means of high-pressure spraying nozzles, whereby the pattern width covered by a single nozzle is essentially narrower than the cross-machine width of the web being coated. The nozzles are located in an enclosure and the excess coat mist formed in the process is removed by means of suction tubes, and advantageously, with the help of a falling film of coating mix flowing down the internal wall(s) of the enclosure.

  • Patent number: 6032584
Abstract: A carriage and track assembly for transferring paper and paperboard rolls along an inclined track. The assembly is useful for the transfer of paper rolls of slippery grades and is based on using a dual track (5, 6) over the length of the inclined section of the transfer track and having compatible wheel sets (3, 4) on the transfer carriage. The front end of the carriage is provided with a wheel assembly (3, 4) in which the rolling perimeter varies at different trackwidths of the assembly. The wheel assembly can be made to run along the inclined sections of said tracks (5, 6) so that in said wheel assembly the rolling perimeters of its wheel sets (3, 4) running on different tracks are vertically located at different heights from the loading platform (1) of the carriage. Thus, the loading platform remains substantially horizontal while the carriage travels along the inclined track.

  • Patent number: 6030499
Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus in a paper or board machine for dewatering the web prior to its passage to a press section. The dewatering is effected by a pair of rolls, which is located at the end of a wire section upstream of a pick-up suction roll or a similar transfer device. An additional wire is brought in contact with a side of the web opposite that of the wire of the wire section and it is passed together with the wire of the wire section and the web through the pair of rolls. One of the rolls is an open-surfaced roll for receiving water from the web over its area of contact with the path of travel formed by the wires and the web. The other roll of the pair of rolls is a smooth-surfaced roll and is in contact within the area of contact with the path of travel formed by the wires and the web on the opposite side.

  • Patent number: 6012386
Abstract: A bearing control system for a roll with hydrostatic bearings which is mounted by its axle on a bearing block or other equivalent frame member by hydraulically loaded hydrostatic bearing elements. A principal bearing element acts in a principal loading direction and another bearing element is a backup bearing element which acts in a direction opposite to the principal loading direction. The bearing elements include bearing shoes positioned freely around the axle in order to support the axle so that the roll revolves freely in relation to the bearing block or other frame member. The control system feeds a hydraulic pressure medium to the hydrostatic bearing elements so that the roll is displaceable in the principal loading direction, e.g., in the direction of the nip plane, by displacing the axle via the bearing elements.

  • Patent number: 6009634
Abstract: An apparatus for drying a fiber web, in which apparatus the fiber web (5) is dried between two tight bands (1, 2) moving in the same direction and turning around turning rolls (6a, 6b, 7a, 7b). The first band (1) is heated by means of a pressure chamber (9) and the second band (2) is cooled by means of a water chamber (10). The fiber web (5) is led together with at least one felt or wire (3, 4) through a drying zone defined by the bands (1, 2) in such a way that the fiber web is in contact with the surface of the first band (1) and the felt or wire (3, 4) is between the fiber web (5) and the second band (2). At least one band (1, 2) is guided by a shoe (11a, 11b) in such a way that the fiber web substantially immediately upon coming into contact with the first band (1) is exposed to the effect of the compression pressure of the pressure chamber (9).
