  • Patent number: 5961065
Abstract: A method for winding a web onto a spool at least partially supported on a support roll in which the web passes through a nip formed between the support roll and a roll formed by the web winding on the spool. The roll being formed is loaded and/or supported by at least one loading/supporting unit which is/are displaced during initial winding stages in a direction substantially in a plane passing through a central axis of the support roll and a central axis of the roll being formed. Thereafter, the loading/supporting unit(s) is/are displaced in a direction substantially along a path parallel to a circumference of the roll being formed, and during final winding stages, the loading/supporting unit(s) is positioned to support the roll being formed from a bottom region thereof.

  • Patent number: 5951821
Abstract: An arrangement and method for transferring a paper web in high-speed paper machines having a press section arranged between a web former and a dryer section. In the press section, there is one or more press nip zones dewatering the web, at least the last one of which is preferably an extended nip through which at least two press fabrics that receive water are passed. The web is passed between the press fabrics through the last extended-nip zone so that the draining of water out of the web takes place through both faces of the web. After the last press nip zone, the web follows one of the fabrics passing through the last extended-nip zone by the effect of a difference in pressure avoiding rewetting of the web. The fabric carrying the web is passed through a gently loaded transfer nip zone in which the web is transferred onto a transfer surface more adhesive than the face of the fabric.

  • Patent number: 5950958
Abstract: A method and arrangement in winding of a web, in particular a paper or board web, in which the web is wound onto a first roll spool to form a first roll. When the first roll is complete, first and second edges of a material strip having a set length in a running direction of the web are attached to the web at first and second fixing points, respectively, at a location before the web is wound about the first roll spool such that the length of the web between the first and second fixing points is less than the length of the material strip. The first and second edges of the material strip extend in a direction substantially transverse to a running direction of the web.

  • Patent number: 5950329
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of and an apparatus for drying a fiber web, whereby the fiber web (5) is dried in a cylinder drying unit (12) and in a band drier unit (11). The cylinder drying unit (12) and the band drier unit (11) are arranged one above the other. A considerable space saving is then achieved and the building costs remain rather moderate. Simultaneously, a remarkable addition to the drying capacity is achievable by moderate investments by means of existing apparatuses, for instance. (FIG.

  • Patent number: 5944957
Abstract: A regulation system and method in a paper machine for controlling the variation of the basis weight of a paper web in the machine direction in which the basis weight profile of the web is measured by means of a measurement device and a basis weight regulation system receives a signal of the measurement of the basis weight from the measurement device and generates a regulation signal for controlling the flow of thick stock passed into a short circulation circuit in the paper machine by a basis weight valve and/or a regulation pump. The variation of the basis weight in the machine direction in the paper machine is controlled, besides by the short circulation circuit of regulation, also by a substantially faster second circuit of regulation which comprises one or more actuators for controlling the flow rate of the dilution water flow in the dilution profiling system of the headbox and/or the consistency of the dilution water flow across the entire width of the paper web.

  • Patent number: 5938895
Abstract: A calender is provided for calendering a fibrous web wherein the moisture profile of the web can be controlled. The calender includes a plurality of rolls wherein at least one of the rolls comprises a profiling roll. The profiling roll has a plurality of profiling zones extending in a cross-machine direction to define a profiling nip. • Patent number: 5919524
Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying a coat mix to a high-speed running board or paper web by accurately premetering and pre-smoothing the applied coat with an applicator apparatus and then minimally doctoring the applied coat with an air knife. The applicator apparatus has a narrow slot-orifice extending in a cross-machine direction for facilitating high-speed laminar flow of coating mix into a gap region defined by confronting surfaces of the applicator apparatus and the web. The applicator apparatus has a member for directing the ejected coating mix in the gap region in a direction reverse to a travel direction of the web so that only a predetermined portion of the ejected coating mix is allowed to form an applied coat on the web. This accurate premetering of the coating mix by the applicator apparatus permits an operator to readily optimize the subsequent process of doctoring the applied coating with an air knife.

  • Patent number: 5915297
Abstract: An apparatus for reducing or preventing vibrations of a roll set of a paper making apparatus, wherein the roll set comprises at least two rolls of which at least one is a soft roll coated with a compressible coating and comprising a temperature control system. The natural vibrational frequency of the roll set is changed during the operation of the apparatus by changing the temperature of the coating of the at least one soft roll. The changing of the natural frequency prevents resonance on a natural frequency of the roll set.

  • Patent number: 5909917
Abstract: A method for fitting a roll mantle of a tubular roll used in a paper machine or equivalent with glide bearings and a tubular roll. The roll mantle is supported on a stationary roll axle by hydraulic glide bearing elements acting upon the roll mantle and/or upon the roll ends. The bearing elements are loaded hydraulically by the pressure of a first pressure medium. The roll is loaded from outside radially in the direction of at least one plane, i.e. in a so-called principal loading direction. The roll mantle is supported on the roll axle by the glide bearing elements which act radially substantially in the principal loading direction in opposite directions and which are provided with a device for regulating the braking pressure provided by a second pressure medium, so that in the principal loading direction, the roll mantle is allowed to move over a certain distance.

  • Patent number: 5909855
Abstract: A method for winding a paper web in which the paper web is wound by a winder or equivalent winding apparatus onto a roll and the running speed of the winder is controlled based on the frequency of rotation of the roll so that when the frequency of rotation of the roll approaches a range of oscillation, i.e., a range of frequency of rotation of the roll in which intensive oscillation occurs, the running speed is lowered quickly so that the frequency of rotation of the roll is reduced to a level lower than the lower frequency of the range of oscillation. Thereafter, the running speed of the winder is increased so that the frequency of rotation of the roll remains substantially constant until, e.g., the running speed of the winder prior to the reduction thereof as the frequency of rotation of the roll approached the range of oscillation is reached.
