  • Patent number: 5416980
Abstract: The invention is related to a method and a device in the drying section of a paper machine for reducing the tendency of the paper to curl. The paper web is dried on drying cylinders, against whose heated faces the paper web is pressed by means of a drying wire. In the drying section, groups of drying cylinders are used, in which twin-wire draw and/or single-wire draw is/are applied. In the drying section, hot water steam is fed substantially onto the entire width of the paper web, by means of which steam tensions that have been formed or that tend to be formed in the fiber mesh in the paper web are relaxed by means of heat and moisture in the area of their formation or substantially immediately thereafter. Moreover, the transverse curling profile and/or moisture profile of the paper web can be controlled by the steam treatment.

  • Patent number: 5403447
Abstract: System in a press section of a paper machine for monitoring and control of the running of the press felts (10,20,30). The press felts (10,20,30) are guided by means of rolls (13,14,15; 23,24,25; 33,34, 35), whose axial directions are altered by means of an actuator (18a, 18b) so as to control the running of the press felts (10,20,30). The system includes detector devices (16,26,36), by whose means the alignment stripe (K) on the felt or felts (10,20,30) is detected, as well as oscillation detectors (17,27,37), by whose means oscillations of the press rolls (10, 20,30) are detected. Into the computer part (50) included in the system, the monitoring signals (a,b) are fed from said detectors (16,26,36, 17,27,37). The computer (50) analyzes the detector data in order to detect any felt-induced oscillations.

  • Patent number: 5395484
Abstract: The invention relates to a twin-wire web former for a paper machine wherein a covering wire and a carrying wire form a twin-wire forming zone between them. A method for dewatering a web is also disclosed. In the invention, water is drained out of a web running through the twin-wire zone through both of the wires. After the twin-wire zone, the web is separated from the covering wire and is transferred on the carrying wire to a pick-up point. In hybrid formers, after an initial single-wire forming zone preceding the twin-wire zone, and in gap formers, after a curved forming zone placed directly after a forming gap, there is a forming shoe provided with a ribbed deck and arranged inside one of the wire loops. This forming shoe is followed by dewatering and web forming units which include forming ribs and are placed inside both of the wire loops. At least one of the dewatering and web forming units is loaded by means of a pressure-hose arrangement.

  • Patent number: 5393383
Abstract: The invention relates to a closed press section in a paper machine and comprises a compact combination of press rolls. Several of the rolls define press nips with each other, between which nips the web has a closed draw supported by the face of a fabric. The press section has a center roll in connection with which a press nip or press nips are provided. A closed loop of a transfer band is passed around the center roll. The web is transferred on an outer face of the transfer band after the last press nip in the compact combination of rolls as a closed and constantly supported draw onto a drying wire in a drying section following after the press section. The transfer band loop is made of a transfer band fabric that substantially does not receive water and does not rewet the web.

  • Patent number: 5389205
Abstract: Method and device in the manufacture of paper or board for dewatering of a paper web that is being manufactured. The paper web is transferred from a forming wire onto a wire in the drying section while constantly on support of a fabric that receives water, a transfer fabric, or of any other, corresponding transfer surface as a closed draw, at a particularly high speed, which is higher than about 25-30 m/s. Dewatering of the paper web is carried out by means of at least two subsequent press nips, of which nips at least one press nip is a so-called extended-nip zone, whose length in a machine direction is larger than about 100 mm. The extended-nip zone is formed in connection with a mobile flexible press-band loop. The distribution of the compression pressure employed within said extended-nip press zone is regulated and/or selected both in the transverse direction of the web and in the machine direction so as to set or to control the different profiles of properties of the web.

  • Patent number: 5387320
Abstract: The invention concerns a twin-wire web former in a paper machine, comprising a carrying wire and a covering wire which together form a twin-wire forming zone. In this forming zone, a forming unit is fitted, which comprises a forming board and a drainage box placed one opposite the other. In the forming board placed facing the drainage box there are a number of transverse loading ribs placed at a distance from each other. Subsequent transverse loading ribs are interconnected by intermediate parts which, together with the transverse loading ribs form ribbed shoes. These shoes can be loaded by means of loading hoses to produce a dewatering pressure in the web (W) placed between the wires. In the area of the forming unit the dewatering takes place both through the covering wire and through the carrying wire also toward the forming board through the open spaces placed between its transverse loading ribs.

  • Patent number: 5385644
Abstract: A method and device for intensifying the operation of a Yankee press in a soft-tissue machine in which a web is pressed in one or several nips formed between a Yankee cylinder and one or more press rolls. The web is dried on the Yankee cylinder by blowing hot air introduced through the Yankee hood against the web. In the method, a blow device is used to blow hot and humid air against the web. The blow air for the blow device is taken from the outlet/heat recovery of the air system of the Yankee hood, and the exhaust air from the blow device is returned to the outlet/heat recovery of the air system of the Yankee hood. Air is blown against the web at the proximity of the nip formed between the Yankee cylinder and the first press roll, before and near the first press nip, in the running direction of the web. The blow device includes a blow chamber, an exhaust chamber, and blow nozzles for blowing hot and humid air against the web and exhaust-air ducts for the removal of the air.

  • Patent number: 5383288
Abstract: A method and device in the drying of paper, especially of fine paper or newsprint is disclosed. A paper web to be dried is passed over a mantle face of a large-diameter flow-through cylinder. On the flow-through cylinder, a set of drying-gas jets is applied to the free outer face of the web through a nozzle arrangement. Water is evaporated outward from the outer part of the web by means of the set of drying-gas jets. The water vapor thus evaporated is removed through spaces in the blowing-on hood. By means of the set of drying-gas jets, the interior of the web to be dried is also heated. The mantle face of the flow-through cylinder is cooled by means of a medium flow. Water that has been vaporized out of the web and that has been condensed onto the cooled faces is sucked by means of negative pressure present in the interior of the flow-through cylinder.
