Publication number: 20070276961Abstract: Techniques for determining user types based on multi-modal clustering are provided. The topology, content and usage of a document collection or web site is determined. The user paths are identified using longest repeating subsequence techniques and a multi-modal information need vector is determined for each significant user path. Multi-modal vectors for each document in the significant path, content, uniform resource locators, inlink and outlink multi-modal vectors are determined and combined based on path position and access frequency. Multi-modal clustering is performed based on a multi-modal similarity function and a specified measure of similarity using a type of multi-modal clustering such as K-means or wavefront clustering. The identified clusters may be further analyzed based on changes to the weighting of the corresponding content, url, inlinks and outlinks multi-modal feature vectors.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 6, 2007Publication date: November 29, 2007Applicant: Xerox CorporationInventors: Ed Chi, Jeffrey Heer, Peter Pirolli

Patent number: 7302382Abstract: A process for generating with unification based grammars such as Lexical Functional Grammars which uses construction and analysis of generation guides to determine internal facts and eliminate incomplete edges prior to constructing a generation chart. The generation guide can then be used in the construction of the generation chart to efficiently generate with unification-based grammars such as Lexical Functional Grammars. The generation guide is an instance of a grammar that has been specialized to the input and only contains those parts of the grammar that are relevant to the input. When the generation guide is analyzed to determine internal facts a smaller generation chart is produced.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2002Date of Patent: November 27, 2007Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventor: John T. Patent number: 7301650Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for operating a network based assembly for document processing when the assembly includes an intelligent Network Interface Controller (iNIC), a Document Processing Device (DPS) and a Digital Front End (DFE) for the DPS. Job data and control data communicated to the assembly through the network are communicated solely through the iNIC functioning as a threshold to the DPS assembly. The iNIC segregates any such data to identify job data that needs to be communicated to the DFE from other data that can be directly communicated to the DPS. Enhanced communication efficiency results from directly communicating control data to the DPS to avoid bottleneck communication of all data through the DFE.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 2000Date of Patent: November 27, 2007Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Tracy E. Patent number: 7301675Abstract: The present invention relates to creating differential gloss images in clear toner by the manipulation of halftones employed prior to the depositing of the clear toner layer upon a substrate. By selectively applying halftones with anisotropic structure characteristics which are significantly different in orientation although remaining identical in density, a differential gloss image may be superimposed within even clear toner as applied to paper. Further, this technique may be used to enhance color toner Glossmark images across the low and high density areas of application where the differential gloss effect would otherwise be weak.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 2004Date of Patent: November 27, 2007Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Shen-Ge Wang, Chu-Heng Liu, Beilei Xu

Patent number: 7302426Abstract: One aspect of the invention receives a plurality of possible list elements and determines a first document space size responsive to a first query that incorporates the possible list elements and defines a first document space. It also determines sizes of second document spaces using a second query set containing separate queries each of which incorporates a different proper subset of the candidate phrases and wherein each of the different proper subset has the same cardinality and defines one of the second document spaces. This aspect also ranks the first document space and the second document spaces. Once the document spaces are ranked, documents are identified so that list elements can be extracted from at least one of the identified documents and presented (for example, displayed, returned in a database, returned in response to a function or subroutine call, etc.).Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 2004Date of Patent: November 27, 2007Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventor: Eric A.
