  • Patent number: 4442981
Abstract: A fishing rod wrapping device consisting of a fixed frame adapted to support one or more spools of wrapping thread for axial rotation, a friction device resisting rotation of said spool whereby thread may be paid out therefrom under a controlled and adjustable tension, a support for a fishing rod adapted to support the rod in parallel relation to the spool, so that the thread, when attached to the rod, is wrapped on the rod when the rod is manually rotated about its axis, the rod support being configurated to maintain the rod parallel to the spool, to retain the rod thereon despite any degree of thread tension, and to permit locking of the rod against movement relative to the spool whenever interruption of the wrapping process may be desired, whereby to preserve both the rod position and the thread tension until the process is recommenced.

  • Patent number: 4438903
Abstract: An obstacle detector is disclosed, being designed to automatically brake a descending or ascending load suspended on at least two spaced cables, should an obstacle be encountered in the path of the load. The detector comprises at least two winch drums and a rotatable horizontal rod having at least two laterally-spaced levers projecting radially therefrom and inclined on opposite sides of the rod. One end of each cable is secured to a drum, passes through a pulley supporting the load and is secured to a corresponding lever at its other end. A change in the tension of one of the cables, due to an obstacle, results in a small rotation of the rod, thus activating an electric sensing device which effectively shuts down the motor driving the winch drums.

  • Patent number: 4437846
Abstract: A normally lubricated bearing, typically a ball bearing, serves to transmit torque from a drive shaft for the fan wheel of an alternator. The driving and driven bearing surfaces form the coupling parts respectively on the drive side and the delivery side of the coupling. A cup spring is useful to control the bearing friction that must be overcome at a limiting speed at which the drive shaft begins to turn faster than the driven device. Such couplings are useful for engine fans, pumps, or other similar auxilary devices in motor vehicles.

  • Patent number: 4437621
Abstract: A handle folding device for a fishing reel is disclosed which is capable of absorbing the shake resulting from micro-small gaps between a handle shaft and a handle and between the handle and a handle stopper, permitting the handle to engage reliably and integrally with the handle shaft and insuring smooth rotation of the handle. The handle folding device has a construction in which the handle can be folded quickly and smoothly with a one-touch operation by rotating the handle while depressing the handle stopper protruding from the upper face of the handle against a spring, and in which the handle thus folded can be automatically fitted to the handle shaft when it is merely rotated to resume its original position.

  • Patent number: 4437616
Abstract: A fiber reinforced plastic pipe tee is wound around a mandrel according to this method and apparatus. Fiber rovings are delivered to the mandrel by way of a delivery ring translated in an X-Y plane. The mandrel can be rotated around an A axis parallel to the X direction or a B axis parallel to the Y direction. By switching between either rotation around the A axis or around the B axis, a three axis numerical control system can be employed. Means are provided for alternately rotating the mandrel around the A and B axes. Means are provided for independently translating the delivery ring in the X and Y directions as the mandrel rotates. The delivery ring comprises a curved bar around which a band of resin impregnated rovings makes a turn enroute to the mandrel for maintaining a reasonably constant width of the band of rovings.

  • Patent number: 4436254
Abstract: An improved spinning-reel particularly adapted to long fly-fishing casts with a shooting-head attached to trailing monofilament. The reel comprises a cylindrical solid shaft, with spool on one end, passing concentrically through and rotatably mounted in a hollow shaft, with bail on one end, rotatably mounted in a gear casing; so enabling the spool to rotate inside a stationary bail, and the bail to rotate about a non-rotating spool. The solid and hollow shafts are each driven by a reciprocally mounted gear thereon that may be axially engaged, by an externally controlled common drive selector, with either its pawl or the single, centrally located, crank-drive gear; so that one gear, at a fixed distance from the other, may be driven while the other is retained by its pawl. A rotating spool inside a stationary bail provides twist-free winding, storage and unwinding of a relatively massive, stiff, large-diameter shooting-head.

  • Patent number: 4434974
Abstract: A pneumatic brake assembly for incorporation into chain hoists and the like includes a planar disk slidably secured to the output shaft of a pneutmatic motor by complementary splines. The disk is biased toward a planar surface and when in contact with such surface, inhibits rotation of the motor output shaft. Compressed air is supplied to both the pneumatic motor and the brake assembly through a network of passageways and check valves. Compressed air supplied to one face of the brake disk, translates the disk, disengaging it from the planar surface and permitting output shaft rotation.

  • Patent number: 4434971
Abstract: The method and apparatus for preventing runaway lowering of a hook block in an oil drilling rig characterized by monitoring the instantaneous values of hook load and speed and using these values together with parameters associated with the rig drawworks to calculate an energy value which must be dissipated during a braking stop by the drawworks brake. The brake or an emergency brake associated with the drawworks is automatically actuated when the calculated energy value reaches a predetermined value representative of the maximum energy absorbing capability of the brake. The brake may also be automatically activated when the position of the hook block reaches predetermined upper and lower limits.

  • Patent number: 4434972
Abstract: The present invention is a hoisting winch that uses two motors, one a low-speed, high-torque hoisting motor and the other a high-speed, low-torque compensation motor. The motor shafts are connected to a cable drum by an epicycloidal gear trains. Uni-directional free-wheel assemblies are operatively connected to the motor shafts between the motors and an associated gear train. A first free wheel assembly includes a first driving element which is connected to the hoisting motor shaft and which drives a first driven element only in the drum unwinding direction. A second free wheel assembly includes a second driving element which is connected to the compensation motor shaft and which drives a second driven element driven only in the drum winding direction. Selectively appliable and releasable brakes resist rotation of the driven elements. An electrohydraulic control system controls the motors and brakes to allow the hoisting winch to be used in loading and unloading cargo from a ship.

  • Patent number: 4431143
Abstract: A sliding drag assembly for a spin casting style fishing reel comprising a clutch ring, disposed between a deck plate, associated with the reel body, and a line-carrying spool. Brake washers may be mounted between the clutch ring and the spool. The clutch ring comprises a substantially flat body with a plurality of legs or cam followers extending angularly from the plane of the body and toward the deck plate. The deck plate has a plurality of ramps or cams corresponding in number and location with the legs or cam followers. Translation of the clutch ring guides the legs or cam followers on the ramps or cams, moving the body forwardly or rearwardly of the reel, depending on the direction of movement of the clutch ring. Preferably, the body and legs are formed as a single piece from a sheet of resilient material, as is a tab, which is folded at a right angle to the plane of the body and through which the ring is manipulated.

  • Patent number: 4426064
Abstract: A compact and rugged drive mechanism for a winch of high pull rating is disclosed featuring a cycloid drive of powerful construction which serves to provide a driving connection between a cable drum and a reversible motor driven, two stage chain and sprocket drive to an input drive shaft. The cycloid drive includes a ring gear and cycloid gear in meshing engagement with the ring gear. The cycloid gear is supported for eccentric rotation within the ring gear. A clutch pin is releasably secured in fixed relation to the ring gear and a fixed housing to prevent ring gear rotation during normal power-in and power-out modes of operation under cable load. Controlled free spooling of the drive mechanism is effected, when desired, upon removing the clutch pin to render it inoperative.
