  • Patent number: 4597751
Abstract: A modular desktop paper scoring apparatus and method for using the scoring apparatus for binding papers is disclosed. The scoring apparatus comprises a pair of rollers, one being of a resilient material, and the other roller being of a hardened material with a peripheral projection or rib positioned in its midsection. On feeding a strip of paper through the rollers, the rib scores the paper, which may then be folded along the score line and used to bind papers.

  • Patent number: 4597275
Abstract: The calender comprises a predetermined number of rolls and at least one of the rolls, for example, the outer roll or the lowest roll of such predetermined number of rolls is structured as a tubular roll or controlled deflection roll comprising a stationary roll support member or beam and a roll shell which rotates about the stationary roll support member and is supported thereat. A position sensor determines the position of the roll shell which is regulated with respect to predetermined reference values by a regulating device. A pre-selected number of different reference values for the position of the roll shell are provided and by selecting an appropriate one of these reference values there is achieved the result that different numbers of the predetermined number of rolls are operative while the remaining rolls of such predetermined number of rolls bear against related stops so that their related roll nips or gaps remain open.

  • Patent number: 4596543
Abstract: Apparatus and method are provided for setting up a basket-type carrier from a collapsed state. The carrier includes pair of foldable end panels connected to opposite ends of a slotted base panel, side panels foldably connected to opposite sides of base panel, and pair of foldably connected panel sections forming a handle. Each end panel has foldably connected upper and lower sections initially in face-to-face relation. Each upper section has side segments foldably connected to ends of the panel sections. A U-shaped insert piece is assembled with the carrier and has upstanding legs extending through the slotted base panel and retaining the handle panel sections in face-to-face relation. The panel sections of the collapsed carrier are in coplanar relation and when the collapsed carrier is at a first station, external force is applied to the panel sections causing same to fold relative to one another into upright face-to-face relation.

  • Patent number: 4596545
Abstract: Apparatus for feeding flat folded cartons from a stationary magazine to a continuously moving conveyor. The magazine has a choke at its discharge end formed from parallel guides which are spaced apart a distance less than the distance between the two folded edges of the cartons. A rotary carrier is located adjacent the magazine and the conveyor. A plurality of planetary members with attached suction cups are rotatably mounted on the carrier. A fixed cam cooperates with cam followers mounted on the planetary members to cause the planetary members to rotate on their own axes as the carrier rotates to pick up cartons from the magazine, open them and deposit them gently between transport lugs on the conveyor.

  • Patent number: 4596544
Abstract: A machine to erect flat-folded cartons, especially such as carry beverage containers, from a flat-folded storage configuration to three dimensional carrying configuration. The machine feeds folded containers from a storage hopper, in singulated fashion, between two endless forwardly flaring vacuum belts which hold the carton sides and move them simultaneously therealong to initialy expand the container. The partially expanded container is then completely expanded and fastened by a cooperating over-head positioning chain structure and an underlying cam wheel and thereafter delivered for further operation. The assembly operations are sequentially timed. The vacuum belts are particularly configured to allow a continuous, rapid operation with low air flow.

  • Patent number: 4596542
Abstract: A mandrel has its face formed to define a negative impression of reinforcing elements to be formed into the walls of a Bliss box. The reinforcing elements may comprise tubular corner posts and/or intermediate hollow ribs or posts. The mandrel is mounted in a machine frame for reciprocation along its axis so that upon full extension of the mandrel it is disposed within a die cavity in which the Bliss body panel is formed around a pair of upstanding end panels. When fully retracted, the mandrel is positioned beneath and adjacent to a pair of magazines for holding supplies of flat end panel blanks, positioned on opposite sides of a superstructure frame of the mandrel. The superstructure is fitted with spaced pairs of feed pawls, a first set of which strips the flat end panels out of the supply magazines to deliver them to an arrested position, corresponding to the retracted position of the mandrel, as a result of extension of the mandrel. Concurrently, the flaps of each end panel are partially shoed inwardly.

  • Patent number: 4596170
Abstract: A bar stock guiding device for use with automatic lathes comprises two cushions which have the shape of semicylindrical annuli. The cushions are applied against each other in a recess of a freely rotatable sleeve. This sleeve is located between the lathe and a tube of the guiding device which contains the bar of stock fed to the lathe. The sleeve normally rotates with the bar of stock, because the opening appearing between the cushions is adjusted with minimal small free play only to avoid whipping of the bar in the cushions and the propagation of vibrations to the stock bar part extending in the working area of the tools. When the pusher passes through the sleeve, it ejects the cushions out of the sleeve recess. Before this ejection occurs, a braking mechanism reduces the speed of rotation of the sleeve to a substantial extent.

  • Patent number: 4596131
Abstract: The assembly is used to guide a movably mounted stamper member in a hot forming machine wherein the guide surfaces located between the stamper member and the machine frame are disposed in an X-arrangement with respect to each other. The inclined angle of each of the guide surfaces is directed approximately to a common central point. Adjustable ledges or strips are fitted to the guide surfaces for setting the clearance between the stamper member and the machine frame. Stamper side carrier rails and support side carrier rails carry the guide surfaces and are directly formed as a part of the stamper member and the frame or frame stanchions. The adjusting strips used for setting the clearance and the securing means for these strips, run approximately parallel to the guide surface. Thus, the stamper member is directly supported on the surfaces of the machine frame.

  • Patent number: 4594870
Abstract: An automatic bending apparatus comprises a bending machine (1) provided with a bottom die (7a) and a top die (7b) for bending a plate, and a gripper (27) for holding the plate. The gripper (27) can be positioned in a vertical plane in the forward and backward direction with respect to the bending machine (1) as well as around a horizontal axis orthogonally intersecting with the vertical plane. When the plate is bent by lowering of the top die (7b) or lifting of the bottom die (7a), the ends of the plate rise. In order to make the gripper (27) follow up the rising motion, positioning of the gripper (27) is controlled successively based on the position data concerning the lowering of the top die (7b) or the lifting of the bottom die (7a).

Abstract: There is provided a method of making a welded can body having a mash seam weld which includes a heat affected zone extending continuously in the longitudinal direction thereof and is formed with no pitting. The weld is formed by mash seam welding a lapped portion of a can body preform made of a surface treated steel sheet while allowing an alternating current to flow through the lapped portion via a water-cooled elongated electrode and a water-cooled rotary electrode. The alternating current has a crest factor satisfying an expression 1.5.ltoreq.Ip/Ie.ltoreq.2.0, where Ie and Ip designate an effective value and a peak value, respectively, of the alternating current.
