  • Patent number: 6723032
Abstract: A segmented roll has a plurality of end-to-end mounted roll segments (10, 10′), each adapted to rotate on bearings supported on a separate support shaft (11). In both axial end surfaces of the support shafts (11) of the roll segments (10) there are coupling means such as an annular projection and an annular recess serving to disengageably connect two adjacent roll segments (10) to each other. The support shaft (11) has at least two parts (16, 18) whose mutual disposition is made alterable for the purpose of altering the axial length of the support shaft (11) so much that the coupling means (29, 41) of the facing axial ends of two adjacent roll segments (10) can be engaged and disengaged with each other. This arrangement makes it possible to change a single roll segment from the central area of the segmented roll without the need for disassembling the entire row of roll segments.

  • Patent number: 6702908
Abstract: A cylinder block for an axial piston pump or motor is formed from a steel material. The block includes a plurality of bores that each have an internal bore surface of a predefined final material surface finish. The bores are subjected to various machining and heat treating processes to provide a bore surface formed from the same material as the cylinder block, and which has the desired final surface finish. Pistons are mounted within each of the bores for axial movement relative to the cylinder block. Each of the pistons is formed from a steel material and has an exterior surface that is in sliding contact with the internal bore surface. The subject cylinder block is processed to provide a steel-to-steel interface between the bore and piston and eliminates the need for liners to be specially formed or installed within each piston bore.

  • Patent number: 6701616
Abstract: Shroud covers for buckets of gas turbines sometimes overlap one another. To repair a shroud cover overlap and preclude further overlap during turbine operation, a first weld bead of high hardness material is applied along the radial inside surface of the overlapping cover and adjacent an intermediate edge of the Z-shaped edges of the covers. Additional weld beads of a more ductile material are applied along the same surface behind the initial weld bead to structurally support the high hardness initially applied weld material. By building up weld material along the inside radial face of the overlapping cover adjacent the overlapped edge of the adjoining cover, the thickness of the overlapping cover is increased to preclude shroud cover overlap during further turbine operation.

  • Patent number: 6701617
Abstract: A method is provided for forming a catalytic converter that includes a catalyst substrate having a noncircular circumference and surrounded by a metal housing. The catalyst substrate is initially measured to determine the radial dimension of the substrate circumference relative to a central axis. The substrate is wrapped in a compressible mat and arranged within a metal tube. The arrangement is subjected to a spin-forming process that forms the metal tube about the catalyst substrate. The spin-forming process includes rotating the metal tube about the substrate axis, while concurrently urging a metal-forming tool against the metal tube. The metal-forming tool is programmed to follow a metal-forming path corresponding to the substrate circumference plus a predetermined radial distance. In this manner, a metal housing is formed having a noncircular circumference corresponding in shape to the catalyst substrate and spaced apart by a uniform insulative layer.
