  • Patent number: 4601224
Abstract: A hot wire cutting system for cutting a pattern shape in a block of polyfoam for use as a casting mold for a metal shielding block to be used in radiotherapy treatments is described. The system provides proportioned current responsive to deflection of the hot cutter wire in order to cancel the deflection and maintain the wire in its optimal central cutting position. The hot cutter-wire preferably passes through a field which provides fine vibratory motion of the cutting wire allowing use of lower wire temperatures to effect the cutting. The system may include optical means for determining the accuracy of the profile cut in the polyfoam block.

  • Patent number: 4601225
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for automatically cutting apart successive articles, such as terry towels, from a continuous length of material, in which such articles are separated therein by portions extending transversely across the material and of less thickness than the articles, so that each cut article has an equal amount of thinner portion remaining on each cut edge for subsequent hemming or the like. The apparatus includes devices for automatically aligning and positioning the thinner separating portion of the material relative to a cutting device so that the cutting device will cut the articles apart generally through the center of the thinner separating portion of the material.

  • Patent number: 4599794
Abstract: Two casings are hinged together along a laterally extending hinge axis. Each casing has a generally box-like configuration with an open side, and a pair of laterally spaced blades are fastened to each casing. The blades have semicircular longitudinally extending cutting edges adjacent the open sides of the casings, and the edges are symmetrically arranged on opposite sides of the hinge axis. Further, a blade having a laterally extending cutting edge is mounted in one of the casings and extends between the two longitudinal blades of the casing. The two casings have holders or braces for properly locating a cable relative to the blades and for pressing the cable against the laterally extending cutting edge when the casings are pivoted to close the open sides.

  • Patent number: 4599925
Abstract: A system for cutting fiberboard wherein a table is provided for supporting the fiberboard with a cutter mounted above the table whereby the cutter is adapted to engage the insulation. The cutter is movable vertically for adjusting its position relative to the insulation and the mount for the cutter is provided with a drive whereby the cutter can be driven longitudinally and transversely of the table for cutting the fiberboard into various shapes. A hold-down device is associated with the cutter for movement therewith and for pressing against the insulation during the cutting operation to thereby prevent displacement of the insulation relative to the table. The cutter preferably comprises a cutting blade rotatably supported on a vertical shaft with the shaft and blade having freedom of movement during a cutting operation.

  • Patent number: 4598620
Abstract: A household slicing machine wherein a disc-shaped knife is rotatable in a vertical plane in response to starting of an electric motor as a result of depression of a trip which is mounted in the housing of the slicing machine. The trip can be depressed only when a detachable guard for the knife is held in an intermediate position in which the guard and an abutment for the foodstuff to be sliced define a gap wide enough for movement of the foodstuff into the range of the rotating knife. The guard causes a spring-biased blocking device to prevent depression of the trip when the guard is shifted to a position in which it cooperates with the abutment to prevent access to the knife as well as when the guard is actually detached or is held in a position in which it is detachable from the housing.

  • Patent number: 4596174
Abstract: A high speed wire handling and cutting apparatus having particular application for efficiently providing a continuous supply of uniform dimension wire leads which are to be electrically connected (e.g. welded) to an electronic component, or the like, so that such component can be connected into an electrical circuit. The apparatus includes a wire feeding crank and an associated cross head assembly, a wire receiving crank and an associated cross head assembly, and a wire cutter disposed therebetween. The wire feeding crank and its associated cross head assembly continuously feed an accurately metered length of wire from a wire supply to the cutter, so that wire sections of precise and uniform dimension can be cut therefrom. The wire receiving crank and its associated cross head assembly embrace the sections of wire that are cut from the supply and transfer the sections from the cutter to a suitable storage facility or to the next stage in an electronic component packaging and/or manufacturing assembly line.

  • Patent number: 4594925
Abstract: For severing a continuous slide fastener chain into individual slide fastener lengths, the chain having succesive coupling element portions and element-free gap sections on a stringer tape, a cutting station is preceded by a detecting unit. The detecting utilizes at least two sensors for sensing the leading end of each successive coupling element portion of the chain which is being conducted to the cutting station. The sensors are longitudinally spaced along the chain's path to the cutting station and produce respective command signals one after the other to a chain drive to reduce the moving rate of the chain in step fashion to a low speed as the gap section approaches the cutting station. This enables uniform and adequate quality fastener length cutting to be reliably achieved.

  • Patent number: 4594929
Abstract: A microtome provided with a drive wheel mounted in a stand, to be actuated manually and/or by means of a drive motor for generating a vertical relative movement between a specimen holder and a cutting knife, has a specimen holder, having a specimen clamping mechanism, arranged so as to be horizontally displaceable in a vertically drivable guide mechanism by means of a cutting-thickness adjustment mechanismn. The adjustment mechanism can horizontally displace the specimen holder through a cutting thickness adjustment distance towards the cutting knife. A specimen retraction mechanism serves to displace horizontally the specimen holder from an unretracted position to a retracted position, the retracted position being further from the cutting knife than the unretracted position. The distance between the retracted position and the unretracted position is greater than the maximum cutting thickness adjustment distance.

  • Patent number: 4594029
Abstract: A tool for trimming coaxial cable comprises a cable-holding member and a cutter-holding member. Sections of the cable-holding member and cutter-holding member are matable for movement relative to each other and they are initially secured together so that stop surfaces of these members are spaced from one another based on the amount of trimming that must be done to trim a cable to a precise electrical length. The end of the cable is secured in the cable-holding member with the end to be trimmed disposed against a cutter member secured to the cutter-holding member. The matable sections are unsecured, the cutter-holding member is rotated relative to the cable-holding member so that the cutter member trims the cable end until the stop surfaces engage.

  • Patent number: 4592430
Abstract: A tool has a housing, a reversible fluid-pressure operated rotary motor which is arranged to drive a bit holder via reduction gear boxes and a clutch which is designed to slip at a predetermined torque. When a trigger is pressed, pressure air is delivered via a valve to the motor, and in a first position of the valve the motor is driven in a forward direction. When the predetermined torque is reached, the clutch slips and displaces an actuator which opens another valve. This in turn creates a pressure differential across the valve which causes it to move to its second position in which pressure air is delivered to the motor to drive it in the reverse direction. When the trigger is released, the valves return to their original positions.
