    Abstract: A cutting-tool insert having a cutting edge at the periphery of at least one of its side faces, and a plurality of serrations in the cutting edge. The side faces of the insert are formed with a plurality of recesses between its center and the cutting edge. The plurality of recesses are spaced from each other around the center of the side face, and are also spaced from the serrated cutting edge, to define a margin between the cutting edge and the recesses extending continuously along the length of the cutting edge following the serrations. Also described is a cutting tool using such inserts.

    Abstract: The present invention includes a radial force detection mechanism for detecting a radial force generated by cutting operation of a cutting tool by use of an ultrasonic vibrator, a depth-of-cut feed mechanism for moving the cutting tool in the depth-of-cut direction, and a vertical feed mechanism for controlling the vertical position of the cutting tool, combined with correction of its movement in the depth-of-cut direction by the depth-of-cut feed mechanism, so as to bring it to the position where a radial force detection signal detected by the radial force detection mechanism becomes zero. By moving the cutting tool in the vertical direction by use of the vertical feed mechanism so that the radial force detection signal may become zero, no radial force is applied to the cutting tool.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a tool for the removal of locking collars of the frangible fasteners used in the aerospace industry, particularly for removal of fasteners installed in close quarters such in a deep channel where conventional tools cannot grip the collar. The tool has a collet-type chuck to grasp the collar of the fastener and has a lead screw to lock the collet chuck about the collar and permit removal of the collar. For this purpose, the collet chuck has a cylindrical neck which is received within a sleeve. The lead screw is received in the opposite end of the collet sleeve and is threadably engaged in the internally threaded bore of the collet chuck member, preferably with left hand threads, and has a head with wrenching flats. The lead screw has a central axial through bore which receives a key member which is used to immobilize the stud or bolt of the fastener system. A disk member is slidably received within the collet sleeve to eject removed collars from the collet chuck member.

    Abstract: A drain plug removing device includes a clip for rotatably engaging and selectively holding a head of a threaded drain plug. The clip has an axis of rotation and includes a pair of openable jaws urged together by a spring. The device includes a selectively bendable, flexible shaft attached to the clip at one end thereof, the shaft being formed of a reboundable coil spring extending away from the clip along the axis of rotation of the clip when the shaft is in an unflexed configuration. The shaft has a handle at another end thereof opposite the clip, such that rotation of the handle applies rotational force to the shaft, which in turn applies rotational force to the clip to cause rotation of the clip and a drain plug held therein. A drain plug can be removed from a crankcase oil pan with the device of the invention without spilling oil onto the fingers and without dropping the plug into a drainage catch basin or funnel beneath the oil pan.

The device comprises a housing in which a retainer shaft for a setting tool is mounted at least for axial displacement, at least one advance drive mechanism within the housing and adapted to be connected to the retainer shaft, a switching sleeve mounted for displacement together with the retainer shaft and defining at least one switch-off point, at least one sensor device supported in the housing for defining the switch-off point, and an adjustment mechanism for adjusting the switch-off point. In known devices of this type, the accurate and rapid adjustment of the switch-off point is difficult. According to the invention the adjustment mechanism is provided within the housing between the switching sleeve and the retainer shaft.

    Abstract: A tool is clamped to a holder by a clamping mechanism carried by the holder. The clamping mechanism includes a plurality of clamping jaws having longitudinally extending shanks. The clamping jaws are actuated by a longitudinally reciprocable drawbar carried by the holder. The jaws are normally spring-biased to laterally inward, non-clamping positions and are actuated to a clamping position by means of a longitudinally movable drawbar carried by the holder. Actuation of the jaws occurs in a two-phase operation. In an initial phase, the shanks are displaced laterally outwardly so as to overlie a shoulder of the tool. In a subsequent phase, the shank is moved longitudinally into contact with the tool shoulder to clamp the tool against the holder.

    Abstract: Apparatus for rotating a tubular well element about its longitudinal axis. There are first and second elongate casing sections pivotally connected to each other at a pivot. A continuous chain is mounted around the drive sprocket, and around the first and second driven sprockets, having an inverse internal portion adapted to receive and directly contact the tubular well element to be rotated. Cylinders are connected between the casing sections to pivot them toward and away from each other and thus alternately clamp the inverse internal portion around the wall element, and release such element from the inverse internal portion. One end of each cylinder is pivotally connected to the first casing section at a point between the pivot and the first driven sprocket.

    Abstract: An open end wrench and a socket wrench are described which are selectively adjustable to rotate fasterners dimensioned pursuant to the English system or the metric system. Both wrenches compris first and second elements having parallel surfaces spaced apart to engage flats, of a given width, on a fastener. Parallel linkage means control relative moventment of the two elements between first and second positions. In the first position, the linkage is parallel to the flat engaging surfaces and the flat engaging surfaces thereof are spaced for rotation of a fastener having flats of the given width. In the second relative position of the elements, the linkage means is generally normal to the flat engaging surfaces and the flat engaging surfaces thereof are offset, with one surface of the first element being laterally spaced from one surface of the second element a predetermined lesser distance for rotation thereby of a fastener having flats of a width approximately said lesser distance.
