Patent number: 7032279Abstract: The apparatus includes a track mounted in the inlet of a compressor. A manipulator is mounted for movement about the track and carries three modules, the last of which mounts a tool head for movement in a Cartesian coordinate system and about the track. A measuring head measures the location of the airfoil surface. An abrading tool mounted on the third module removes surface material from the airfoil. Subsequently, a shot-peening device, either a flapper with embedded shot or free shot is impacted against the abraded surface to strengthen the surface. Final inspection is performed by a light and camera head mounted on the third module.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 2002Date of Patent: April 25, 2006Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: John McCarvill, Ronald H. Patent number: 7032312Abstract: A system and method for the manufacture of a laser-welded cone-shell catalytic converter (100) is provided. An unformed shell blank (111) is formed into a cylindroid shell (110) having overlapping edges (112), which are then resistance welded to produce a shell seam (116). The shell seam (116) is planished to a thickness (120) less than 125 percent of a thickness (119) of the unformed shell blank (111). A ceramic catalytic substrate (130) is wrapped in a ceramic-fiber mounting mat (131) and inserted into the shell (110). Ends (125) of the shell (110) are crimped to form a 1 mm turndown (134). A pair of endcones (140) is assembled, where for each endcone (140) an outer cone (141) is loaded with an endcone insulation (142), and an inner cone (143) is pressed into and spot-welded to the outer cone (141). The endcones (140) are fitted to the shell (110) so as to form an overlap zone (151). The endcones (140) and shell (110) are then laser welded by an Nd:YAG laser (253) in the overlap zone (151).Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 2002Date of Patent: April 25, 2006Assignee: Calsonickansei North America, Inc.Inventors: Stephen L. Patent number: 7028394Abstract: An automatic thermal debonding system removes slider rows from a stainless steel processing fixture. The system uses a bimodal pitch adjustment and a mechanical row detainment mechanism to remove the rows from the fixture. The system allows full control of all critical process parameters such as accurate and repeatable row placement; controlled temperature and heat flow; controlled mechanical removal pressure; temporal control and variability; clean and contaminant-free working area; and full electrostatic discharge grounding and compatible materials. The bimodal pitch adjustment feature allows for continual, high-speed removal of the ceramic rows from the fixture after an automated heating cycle is complete. As the rows are removed, they are accurately placed into the detainment mechanism for the next process step.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2003Date of Patent: April 18, 2006Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: John M. Patent number: 7020947Abstract: A method for constructing a metal wire with embedded filaments or cavities therein for biomedical applications. The method includes first drilling nonconcentric apertures in a symmetrical pattern in a metal rod and then embedding filaments in the apertures. The metal rod is then drawn and thermally-treated to form a metal wire with embedded filaments therein. The filaments may advantageously provide fatigue resistance, radiopacity, and electrical conductance to the metal wire. The method optionally provides an additional step for withdrawing or removing the filaments using various methods to create cavities for cavity access within the metal wire. The metal wire may be finished to provide access to the cavities or filaments embedded therein. The cavities may then be filled with a therapeutic drug for elution inside the human body or used for passage of body fluids.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 2003Date of Patent: April 4, 2006Assignee: Fort Wayne Metals Research Products CorporationInventor: David Jeurgens Bradley

Patent number: 7020963Abstract: An indirect bonding apparatus is made by initially placing spacer material over a replica of the patient's tooth structure. A tray is then formed over the spacer material and hardened. Next, the spacer material is removed from the tooth replica and orthodontic appliances are placed on the replica at desired locations. A matrix material is placed between the tray and the replica and allowed to harden. Optionally, the apparatus includes features for facilitating removal of the transfer apparatus after the bonding procedure has been completed, and features for applying firm, uniform pressure to the appliances during the bonding procedure. Other aspects of indirect bonding are also described.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 2003Date of Patent: April 4, 2006Assignee: 3M Innovative Properties CompanyInventors: James D. Cleary, David K. Patent number: 7020955Abstract: An automatic rivet loading module which includes a pusher mechanism, a gripper mechanism, a mandrel receptacle, mechanisms for moving mandrels in the mandrel receptacle, and a tool activation device. The gripper mechanism receives a rivet, and a mandrel is moved through the rivet such that the rivet threads onto the mandrel. The gripper mechanism moves out of the way while the pusher mechanism pushes the mandrel down. The pusher mechanism then retracts, and the gripper mechanism closes and is ready to receive another rivet. This process is repeated until the mandrel is full of rivets. The mandrel receptacle is rotatable such that the loaded mandrel swings to a position under the tool activation device to be loaded into a rivet tool. As the loaded mandrel is swung under the tool activation block, a new mandrel is swung under the gripper mechanism, in position for loading with rivets.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 2004Date of Patent: April 4, 2006Assignee: Textron Inc.Inventors: James W. Joseph, Wim Bouman

Patent number: 7007383Abstract: A dovetail preform having linearly extending hooks and slots is finished to provide arcuate slots and hooks for securement of the finished bucket dovetail to a correspondingly-shaped dovetail of a turbine wheel. An electrode having the general configuration of the dovetail with arcuate hooks and slots is provided. After relatively linearly displacing the electrode and preform, disposed in an electrolytic solution, to insert the electrode hooks into the slots of the preform, the electrode and preform are relatively displaced in a direction normal to the direction of the linear slots and hooks of the preform such that metal of the preform is burned to form arcuate finished surfaces along the hooks of the preform. In another embodiment, the electrode has a dovetail configuration as a negative of the finished dovetail for the bucket and passes along an arc of a circle through the linearly extending slots of the preform to form the opposed concave and convex surfaces of the finished bucket dovetail.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 2002Date of Patent: March 7, 2006Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Jack Przybylski, Christophe J. Patent number: 7007362Abstract: A method of forming a slip joint includes providing a forming mandrel having a plurality of axially extending external splines, placing an inner tube circumferentially about the mandrel, and applying radially inward pressure on the inner tube to deform the inner tube and cause it to conform to the shape of the mandrel. The deformation step forms splines on the outer surface of the inner tube. A circumferential seal is then applied around the inner tube, and an outer tube is placed around the inner tube and the seal. Radially inward pressure is applied on the outer tube to deform the outer tube and cause it to conform to the shape of the inner tube, and thereby forming splines on the inner surface of the outer tube. The splines on the outer surface of the inner tube and the splines on the inner surface of the outer tube are configured to cooperate together to form a slip joint.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 2003Date of Patent: March 7, 2006Assignee: Torque-TractionTechnologies, Inc.Inventor: Daniel W.
