  • Patent number: 6993811
Abstract: A method for applying diffusion aluminide coating on a selective area of a turbine engine component and the coating produced by that method is disclosed. A quartz infrared lamp heats only substantially the localized area of the component to be coated, rather than the complete part. Either halide activated or non-activated tape is applied on the area to be coated and is held in place during coating using a high temperature dimensionally stable tape holder manufactured from graphite or ceramic. The quartz infrared lamp is used to heat only the desired area to a coating temperature of about 1800° F. to about 2000° F. under an inert atmosphere for about 3 to about 8 hours to achieve the desired aluminide coating thickness. No powder masking of the machined surface area is required. Due to the localized heating, aluminum vapor generated from the tape will only deposit aluminide coating on the taped area.

  • Patent number: 6993837
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for assembling a camshaft by using a shaft (10) and a plurality of cams (21–26) comprising respectively an opening for the shaft. According to the invention, the cams are disposed in a tight manner in a storage element (40), in such a way that they are orientated towards each other in a predefined rotative position, the openings thereof for the shaft being orientated in a coaxial manner. The shaft is then introduced into the cam packet and arranged consecutively with respect to each individual cam by displacement in the longitudinal direction thereof. The cams are secured one after the other on the shaft. The required rotation of the cams can be obtained in a simple manner by longitudinal displacement of the shaft and also by optionally rotating the shaft at a certain angle.

  • Patent number: 6988302
Abstract: A system for verifying the quality of a pressing operation of a press-fit part onto a receiving portion of a receiving assembly. The system is applicable to the installation of a bearing cup onto a shaft, or a valve seat into a cylinder head. A probe measures a predetermined dimension of the press-fit part to establish a first measurement value. In the case of a valve seat installed a receiving pocket of a cylinder head, a measuring probe is inserted into the receiving pocket of the cylinder head to measure its depth. The depth is recorded as a second measurement value. The valve seat is then pressed into the pocket, and the residual depth is measured to determine the distance between the outermost surface of the pressed in valve seat and the outer surface of the receiving pocket. A computation compares the depth of the pocket against the thickness of the valve seat to determine a difference which is then compared to the residual depth.

  • Patent number: 6983540
Abstract: A liquid mixture containing a liquid polymeric material and a granular filler is injected into a mold (11) for centrifugal molding and subjected to centrifugal molding, thereby preparing a cylindrical body including a homogeneous dispersion layer (2) having the filler homogeneously dispersed in the polymeric material and a high-density packed bed (1), formed on the outer peripheral surface side or on the inner peripheral surface side of the homogeneous dispersion layer (2), containing the aforementioned polymeric material more densely filled with the aforementioned filler. The high-density packed bed (1) is removed for exposing the surface of the homogeneous dispersion layer (2). According to this structure, the yield of the elastic cylindrical body can be improved.

  • Patent number: 6981311
Abstract: A system and method for precision fastening of a fastener. The fastening system includes a motor and a sensor that provides a feedback signal from the motor to a controller. The controller compares the feedback signal to a threshold value to determine if an error condition exists. If the error condition exists, the controller oscillates a rotor to the motor between a first and a second position. In one construction, a resolver provides a signal to the controller representing a position of the oscillating rotor. The oscillating rotor vibrates the housing, thereby alerting an operator of the error condition. In one construction, the fastener device can alert the operator that the fastener is not tightened to a proper torque, and that the fastener is not rotated through a proper angle of rotation.

  • Patent number: 6981321
Abstract: A hydrostatic cylinder block having a split cylinder block with a slipper hold-down created by breaking down the cylinder block into its basic geometries through near net shaping technology. The cylinder block is broken down into four separate components: a hub, a wave spring, a cylinder block body, and a base plate. Each component is created using near net shaping technologies. The geometries are then placed together to create the completed cylinder block wherein the wave spring separates the hub from the block body to provide an improved slipper hold down force.

  • Patent number: 6978546
Abstract: A method for producing ring members, such as rings for rolling bearings, through use of a rolling operation involves warming a ring blank, positioning the warmed ring blank over a mandrel which is rotatable about a first axis, and positioning a forming roll rotatable about a second axis aligned with the first axis so as to form a rolling gap with the mandrel, with a portion of the ring blank being positioned in the rolling gap. The forming roll is driven to rotate in one rotary direction while the mandrel is driven to rotate in a rotary direction opposed to the rotary direction of the forming roll. During rotation of the forming roll and the mandrel, the mandrel is urged towards the forming roll to reduce the size of the rolling gap and thereby reduce the thickness of the ring blank while also increasing its diameter.
