Abstract: A radiation curable coating composition for various substrates contains an adduct of acrylic acid and a diepoxy resin modified with an anhydride, such as maleic anhydride, and a low boiling alcohol and/or ketone vehicle. The coating composition can be pigmented and can also contain additives commonly used in coatings, such as wetting agents and flow control agents. The coating composition does not require the usual hydrocarbon vehicles that give rise to air pollution problems or reactive monomer vehicles that can create health hazards.

Abstract: Unsymmetrical monoketals of aromatic 1,2-diketones ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are different radicals, are manufactured by reacting the corresponding aromatic 1,2-diketones, in an organic solvent, with an acid ester (R.sup.1).sub.n X as alkylating agent and an alcoholate (R.sup.2 O).sub.m Me, where n and m are integers from 1 to 3, X is an acid radical and Me is a metal of main groups 1 to 3 of the periodic table of the elements. The resulting diketone monoacetals are particularly suitable for use as photoinitiators in photopolymerizable compositions.

Abstract: Improved radiation vulcanization of elastomers is accomplished by incorporating into the elastomer composition a polythiol, bivalent metal oxide and an aliphatic acid. The polythiol is preferably a hydrocarbon thioether thiol and is normally liquid at room temperature with a molecular weight of at least 150, said metal oxide is preferably zinc oxide and said acid is preferably stearic acid; alternatively, the reaction product of said metal oxide and acid can be used e.g., zinc stearate at appropriately increased concentration.
Abstract: A self-adhesive composition comprising a crosslinked copolymer of 0.01 to 5% by weight based on said composition of a compound taken from the class consisting of acrylic and methacrylic-[(2-alkoxy-2-phenyl-2-benzoyl) ethyl] esters and at least one monomer capable of producing a self-adhesive polymer. A method of preparation of the composition is also disclosed.

Abstract: A process for producing a photodegradable rubber foamed products of excellent softness, which comprises mixing 1,2-polybutadiene with 0.1 to 3.0% of a photosensitizer and with a thermally decomposable foaming agent, irradiating with ultraviolet ray of a wavelength of 240 to 400 m.mu. for 10 minutes or less to form a cross-linked material having a gel fraction of 30 to 80% (in boiling toluene; 7 hours), and heating to 150 to 230.degree. C. to form a foamed product. In particularly preferred embodiments of this invention, the foaming agent is p,p'-oxybis (benzenesulfonylhydrazide).
Abstract: A process for producing a reactive aqueous emulsion comprising dispersing a monomer mixture of (a) 65.0 - 98.8% by weight of radical polymerizable hydrophobic ethylenic unsaturated monomer having one ethylenic unsaturated bond, (b) 1.0 - 30.0% by weight of radical polymerizable ethylenic unsaturated monomer having a glycidyl group and (c) 0.2 - 5.0% by weight of a radical polymerizable ethylenic unsaturated monomer having a carboxylic group in water by virtue of a restricted amount of surface active agent and irradiating with an ionizing radiation for a total dose of more than 0.01 Mrad at temperatures ranging from -5.degree. C. to 50.degree. C. This reactive aqueous emulsion does not contain low-molecular water-soluble compounds such as a radical polymerization initiator, a pH regulator, etc. and can form a film having improved properties.

Abstract: Ethylenically unsaturated monomers are polymerized in bulk in the presence of from 0 to 10% by weight of a photoinitiator by irradiation of UV light(a) in a first reaction stage at or below the boiling point of the reaction mixture, up to a conversion of 40 - 80% by weight, and(b) in a second reaction stage, at a temperature which has been raised by from 20 to 120.degree. Abstract: A liquid ethylenically unsaturated polyetherurethane composition having a viscosity at 24.degree. C. of 1000 to 10,000 centipoises dispersible in dilute aqueous sodium hydroxide is capable of being polymerized by actinic light to yield a solid having a Shore A hardness of at least 30 when the composition contains 0.5 to 15 percent dialkyl, aminoalkyl, acrylate or methacrylate. The resulting polymer is capable of taking on excellent halftone or half dot quality.
Abstract: A liquid radiation and moisture curable 100% reactive coating which cures to yield a clear, tough, glossy abrasion-resistant cured coating is described. The radiation and moisture curable 100% reactive coating composition comprises: 15 to 60 parts by weight acrylate diluents; and 40 to 85 parts by weight of isocyanate terminated urethane prepolymers formed by reacting a mixture of polyester diols and triols with excess aliphatic diisocyanate to form --NCO terminated prepolymer and then reacting the --NCO terminated prepolymers with sufficient hydroxy acrylate to cap between about 5% and 15% of the available --NCO sites to form addition polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated sites and a photoinitiator when light is the radiation source.
Abstract: A graft copolymer membrane prepared by co-grafting a mixture of monomers consisting essentially of acyloxystyrene and/or hydroxystyrene, a polyene compound and at least one member selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and esters of these acids onto a hydrocarbon type of fluorine-containing type polymer by means of ionizing radiation exhibits improved mechanical strength and reduced electrical resistance and provides an excellent ion-exchange membrane.

Abstract: Hydantoin diacrylate compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen, alkyl containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms; R.sub.2 is alkyl containing 5 to 8 carbon atoms; and R.sub.3 is hydrogen or methyl are prepared. The diacrylate compounds are liquid at room temperature, easily processable as adhesives, casting and laminating resins and when cured possess excellent resistance to water.
Abstract: A radiation curable coating comprising;A. an oligomer of Formula I: ##STR1## wherein: R.sup.1 is hydrogen or methyl;Y is a divalent urethane residue;B. a benzylidene acid ester of Formula IV: ##STR2## wherein R.sup.4 is independently alkyl or hydroxy alkylene. Preferably the coating composition contains a vinyl monomer copolymerizable with the oligomer. The process for curing the coating is also disclosed.
