Abstract: Disclosed is an ungelled, modified chlorinated polyolefin resin suitable for providing a highly adherent, solvent resistant film on a thermoplastic polyolefin substrate. The modified chlorinated polyolefin resin is prepared by grafting an unsaturated polycarboxylic acid and/or an unsaturated acid anhydride onto a chlorinated polyolefin resin to form an acid- and/or anhydride-modified chlorinated polyolefin resin. The resulting acid- and/or anhydride-modified chlorinated polyolefin resin is reacted with an organic monohydric alcohol to form an esterified product containing acid functionality. The resulting esterified product is reacted with a polyepoxide to form the ungelled modified chlorinated polyolefin resin. Also disclosed is a method of preparing an ungelled modified chlorinated polyolefin resin of the invention, a coating composition containing a resin of the invention, and a method of forming a hardened film from the coating composition on a thermoplastic polyolefin substrate.

Abstract: A carbinol-containing polyimide oligomer terminated with epoxide-reactive end groups has the structure ##STR1## wherein Ar is ##STR2## R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently divalent organic radicals; R.sup.3 is a trivalent organic radical; Y is an epoxide-reactive group (e.g.); m is 0 or 1 and n is 0-10. Suitable epoxide-reactive groups include a phenol, thiol, amine, or carboxyl group. Polyimide-polyepoxide adducts are prepared by reacting the polyimides with a polyepoxide, preferably a diepoxide used in excess. The polyimide oligomers are useful as coatings or adhesives. The adducts are useful as adhesives, for composites, and particularly for impregnating the fiberglass sheets which are used to form circuit boards.

Abstract: Cationic resins based on epoxy resins which are modified through the introduction of phosphoric acid segments and the process of producing the resins are described. The reaction of the phosphoric acid is carried out in a multiple-step process whereby, in a first step, the diester is formed through reaction of ortho-phosphoric acid with 2 moles of a monoepoxy compound or through reaction of a polyphosphoric acid with n-1 moles of a monoalcohol and subsequent reaction with n+1 moles of a monoepoxy compound. The remaining acid group is reacted with a di- or polyepoxy resin. The products obtained can still contain unreacted epoxy groups. The protonable groups are introduced via the epoxy groups and/or via the hydroxy groups present or set free by opening of the oxirane ring. The binders can be combined with hardening components or may be formulated as self-crosslinking binders. The binders have excellent resistance to corrosion when stoved as electrodeposited coatings.
Abstract: Cathodically depositable paint binders based on epoxy resin/amine adducts modified with diamine bridges which carry longer-chained substituents are described. The diamine bridges are the reaction products of diprimary amines and mono- and diepoxy compounds. The modified epoxy resin/amine adducts have low viscosities and low glass transition temperatures in spite of their high molecular weights. The stoved films, even with higher film thickness, have flawless surfaces and excellent mechanical properties.

Abstract: Crosslinking cationic paint binders, preferably cathodically depositable paint binders comprising (poly)-2-hydroxyalkylurea compounds as a crosslinking agent are described. The 2-hydroxyalkylureas are obtained by reacting organic polyisocyanates with secondary beta-hydroxyalkylamines. The crosslinking agents of the invention permit film formation in the stoving range of about 140.degree. C., which is particularly favorable for water-based paints. Additionally, selective semi-blocking which is made possible through the difference in reactively between the NCO-groups of individual polyisocyanates is enhanced through use of the secondary amino groups, in comparison to through use of hydroxyl groups which are conventionally used.
