  • Patent number: 9401689
Abstract: Tunable diplexers in three-dimensional (3D) integrated circuits (IC) (3DIC) are disclosed. In one embodiment, the tunable diplexer may be formed by providing one of either a varactor or a variable inductor in the diplexer. The variable nature of the varactor or the variable inductor allows a notch in the diplexer to be tuned so as to select a band stop to eliminate harmonics at a desired frequency as well as control the cutoff frequency of the pass band. By stacking the elements of the diplexer into three dimensions, space is conserved and a variety of varactors and inductors are able to be used.

  • Patent number: 9385412
Abstract: Cavity resonators have a multitude of applications in radio-frequency, microwave, and vacuum electronics. Cavity resonators are used as frequency selective filters and oscillators. In vacuum electronic devices and charged particle accelerators cavities are used to couple energy into and out of charged particle beams. Typically cavity resonators are optimized for single mode operation and are limited to sinusoidal waveforms and interactions. Harmonic cavities have many of the same applications, but because they resonate many axially symmetric harmonic modes simultaneously, the superposition of these modes is an on-axis arbitrary waveform. Harmonic cavities have both passive and active applications. When a periodic charged particle beam passes through a harmonic cavity whose resonances are at the same frequency as the beam's periodicity, the beam induces these cavity modes to resonate. The superposition of these modes, on axis, has a voltage vs. time waveform that ideally mirrors the current vs.

  • Patent number: 9374887
Abstract: Resonances can be tuned in dielectric resonators in order to construct single-resonator, negative-index metamaterials. For example, high-contrast inclusions in the form of metallic dipoles can be used to shift the first electric resonance down (in frequency) to the first magnetic resonance, or alternatively, air splits can be used to shift the first magnetic resonance up (in frequency) near the first electric resonance. Degenerate dielectric designs become especially useful in infrared- or visible-frequency applications where the resonator sizes associated with the lack of high-permittivity materials can become of sufficient size to enable propagation of higher-order lattice modes in the resulting medium.
