Abstract: A self-securing ball-and-socket joint which has a ball head integrally formed on a rod, an outer structural part having a bore that pivotably receives the ball head and a radially elastic CIRCLIP brand retaining ring as well as a separate auxiliary assembly tool for the retaining ring. In the outer structural part beside the center of the ball head, there is a circumferential groove having a support face for the retaining ring. When the ball-and-socket joint is assembled, the retaining ring is first inserted into the circumferential groove. Then the auxiliary assembly tool is inserted into the bore. At its initial end the auxiliary assembly tool is embodied in the manner of a centering and expansion tool, so that it aligns the retaining ring with respect to the circumferential groove and finally forces it into this groove. Upon further displacement of the auxiliary assembly tool, the retaining ring snaps home into a detent notch provided on the circumference of the auxiliary assembly tool.

Abstract: Prefabricated insulated pipeline section having a one-piece cast cured and dried insulative liner formed of lightweight aggregate in a foamed portland cement paste binder bonded to the inner surface of a tubular outer casing. The liner composition may be cast in place between the liner and the pipe, and wet cured at elevated temperature. Bonding between the pipe and the liner composition is avoided by employing a cement cure retarder on the outer surface of the pipe or by mechanically debonding the pipe from the liner during curing. After curing, the pipe is withdrawn to expose the inner surface of the liner to permit rapid drying at elevated temperature. The prefabricated insulated sections permit simplified pipeline construction at reduced cost as compared with traditional methods of applying half shells of insulation to the pipeline on site.

Abstract: Apparatus (16) for gripping the inner surface of a plug (14) so that it can be removed from a tube (12). The apparatus includes a shaft (18) having an enlarged frustoconical head (20) with a collar member (24) surrounding the shaft. The collar has a plurality of flexible fingers (22) extending up therefrom, which are forced radially outwardly into contact with the inner wall of the plug when the head is moved longitudinally outwardly from the plug. Each finger has an end portion which is tapered and forms first (10 degrees) and second (5 degrees) angles on its inner (32) and outer (30) surfaces, respectively; and the frustoconical surface (34) of the enlarged head forms a third angle (15 degrees), with the sum of the first and second angles being equal to the third angle. The end portions of the fingers are thus moved radially outwardly, such that their outer surface lies parallel with the inner surface of the plug and thus, the plug is gripped over a large surface area by the gripping mechanism.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for assembling a front guard panel having two inwardly projecting shafts on rearwardly facing end pieces into two corresponding holes of a half case. The farther hole is open. The guard panel is placed on table which moves linearly with respect to the half case and is inclined with respect to the front of the half case. The linear movement places the near shaft adjacent the near hole. Then the guard panel is rotated about an axis near the near hole so as to insert the near shaft into the near hole and to move the far shaft into the far hole.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for producing spinning nozzle plates having funnel-shaped preliminary channels in flow communication with nozzle capillaries. Two embodiments of the method are provided which use photolithographic and electrodeposition techniques. Common to both embodiments of the method is the use of a metal plate provided with funnel-shaped preliminary channels as a self-aligning irradiation mask for irradiating a photoresist layer provided on the metal plate. Nozzle capillaries subsequently defined either in an electrodeposited layer according to a first embodiment of the invention or in electrodeposited tubular projections according to a second embodiment of the invention, have an offset-free, continuous transition between themselves and the preliminary channels. Photolithographic and electrodeposition techniques may also be used to define the funnel-shaped preliminary channels in the metal plates.
Abstract: A bearing extractor having a support element in which a rod is positioned such that the rod is capable of expanding, within a bearing, the prongs of a bearing grasping assembly. Once the prongs of the bearing grasping assembly grasp the bearing, the bearing is raised by the rod until the case surrounding the bearing engages the support element. Thereafter continued raising of the rod removes the bearing from its case.
Abstract: A method for making a cylinder head cast from an aluminum alloy intended for use in internal combustion engines, and more particularly, a method for improving a portion of the cylinder head by a local heat treatment, comprises casting a cylinder head body from an aluminum alloy, directing a high density energy, such as TIG arc, laser, plasma arc or electron beam, to the surface of at least one region of the cylinder head body where a high strength is required, thereby rapidly remelting a surface layer in that region, and subsequently removing the irradiating energy and allowing the molten aluminum alloy of the surface layer to be rapidly cooled and solidified through heat transfer therefrom to the underlying matrix thereby forming a remelted, solidified layer.

Abstract: A method for remotely removing and replacing defective tube ends of heat exchanger tubes located adjacent a tubesheet. In the method, a rotary cutting tool is inserted into each defective tube and the tube end portion is cut at a location near the tubesheet, a weld joint between the tube and tubesheet is removed, and the defective tube is then withdrawn through the tubesheet opening. Next, the resulting exposed end of the existing tube is remotely machined using a special rotary cutting tool, then a new replacement tube is inserted through the tubesheet opening and positioned in axial alignment and interfitting engagement with the end of the existing tube, after which the rear end of the new tube is expanded firmly against the tubesheet opening. The front or inner end of the replacement tube is then expanded firmly against the inner surface of the existing tube end, in preparation for welding these tubes together.

Abstract: A cam shaft made from lobes having irregularly shaped apertures spaced along the longitudinal axis of a hollow tubular shaft. The method of making the cam shaft includes the steps of: inserting a hollow tubular shaft through the apertures of a plurality of the lobes axially and radially with respect to the longitudinal axis of the shaft. The method is characterized by flaring at least a first end of the shaft and backing the exterior of the first flared end to prevent axial radial movement thereof. In addition, a plug means is inserted into fluid sealing engagement with the interior of the first flared end to sandwich the flared end against the backing of the exterior thereof. The hollow shaft is filled with liquid and the opposite ends of the shaft are clamped between the plug means at the first flared end and a fluid sealing means at the opposite end of the hollow shaft. Hydraulic force is then applied to the interior of the shaft to expand the hollow shaft into engagment with the apertures of the lobes.
