  • Patent number: 7710903
Abstract: A system and method automatically configures the interfaces of an intermediate network device. A discovery process operating at the device detects the identity or type of network entities actually coupled to the device's interfaces. Utilizing the identity or type of detected entities, a look-up is performed to obtain a configuration macro specially defined for each detected network entity. The retrieved configuration macros are executed and applied at the respective interfaces. During operation, the intermediate network device continues to monitor the identity and type of entities actually coupled to its interfaces. If a change is detected, such as an entity moving from a first to a second interface, the specially defined configuration macro for that entity floats from the first to the second interface where it is executed and applied.

  • Patent number: 7701878
Abstract: This invention pertains to a method for collision avoidance in local Ethernet networks, such as a home automation network, having a personal computer and a plurality of control devices attached. In such a network, when a management message is broadcast from the host personal computer to all connected control devices, each one of such devices must reply with a response to the host computer. There is, however, a probability that responses might collide, leading to data loss. The present invention discloses a method to generate delayed responses to the sender from each control device, where an individual device's delay is computed in accordance to a unique value contained in its MAC address. The method will guarantee different delay times for all attached control devices, and hence a collision-free operation.

  • Patent number: 7701847
Abstract: Disclosed is an inter-card channel protection method in a wave-length division multiplexing system. At the transmitting end, signals from the client side are divided via a coupler into two paths which are delivered to two cards, respectively. The two paths of signal transmitted by the two cards are sent via different routes to the receiving end. At the receiving end, the two paths of signal enter two cards, respectively, and the two cards communicate with each other directly. The standby card submits the signal quality detected by a detecting device to the primary card. The switching control unit on the primary card issues the commands of switching on/off the client-side lasers to the standby card in accordance with a decision made. One of the client-side lasers on the primary card and standby card is switched on while the other is switched off.

  • Patent number: 7697469
Abstract: A wireless communication network improves reverse link communication performance by changing one or more Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) control settings as a function of measured or estimated reverse link loading. Control settings can be changed on a per-sector basis, allowing consideration of different loading conditions in different radio sectors of the network. Further, control settings can be changed for individual mobile stations, or selected groups of mobile stations, allowing different ARQ controls to be used for different mobile stations. By way of non-limiting example, a control circuit in a base station controller can be configured to take advantage of light reverse link loading conditions in a given radio sector by changing the ARQ control parameter(s) used for one or more mobile stations operating in that sector so that fewer ARQ retransmissions are required for those mobile stations to transmit reverse link data to the network.

  • Patent number: 7688729
Abstract: The present invention is applicable to access networks across which virtual connections have been provisioned to meet traffic and QoS requirements. The present invention improves service integrity by controlling the right for a service instance to use the network resources that have been provisioned for its class of service. Whenever a subscriber requests a service that requires a pre-determined bandwidth with a pre-determined QoS, one checks whether the virtual connection over which the service will be delivered to the subscriber can convey the required bandwidth with the required QoS. According to the check outcome, the service is granted or denied to the subscriber. The present invention may further improve the usage of the network resources. This second object is achieved by adapting the configuration of the access network according to the real traffic demand.

  • Patent number: 7688833
Abstract: In order to enable nodes with a single protocol switch core to be used in a synchronous transmission network carrying both SDH and SONET traffic then one option is to convert traffic between protocols at the various network nodes. For example, if the network node has a switch core arranged for SONET, then when SDH traffic arrives at that node it can first be converted to SONET before being processed by the switch core and then converted back to SDH again if required. Known methods of converting between SONET and SDH are not suited for use at egress points of network nodes where pointer alignment processes do not occur. A new method of converting between SONET and SDH is described which overcomes these problems by reordering the position of stuff columns.

  • Patent number: 7689173
Abstract: A method and a system for controlling a reverse link rate by using the number of active users who are carrying out communication in a CDMA 1xEV-DO mobile communication system is disclosed. A value of rise-over-thermal (ROT) at each antenna end of a wireless base station is measured and compared with a threshold ROT which defines an allowable limit of the ROT. A reverse activation control bit is set as 0 if the measured ROT value is smaller than or equal to the threshold ROT. The number of the active users is compared with a threshold user number which defines an allowable limit of the active users if the measured ROT value is greater than the threshold ROT. The reverse activation control bit is set as 0 if the number of the active users is smaller than or equal to the threshold user number. The reverse activation control bit is set as 1 if the number of the active users is greater than the threshold user number.

  • Patent number: 7688824
Abstract: A cable modem method, system, and computer program product are provided for payload header suppression in which a limited number of suppression indices is used to map suppression rules to data streams. Network resources are conserved by implementing precise classification algorithms to correctly identify incoming packets at the cable modem as belonging to a particular data stream, which ensures that a minimum number of suppression indices are utilized. Additionally, network resources are conserved by utilizing sophisticated algorithms for reusing suppression indices when new data streams are detected by the cable modem. One such reuse algorithm involves recycling the suppression index that has been least recently used in transmitting a packet with a suppressed payload header.
