  • Patent number: 4685319
Abstract: Rolling method and apparatus for forming sections having a flange connected to a web. Between two optional steps of roughing, intermediate rolling, and finishing steps, rolls 15, 15', 16, and 16' are arranged to expand the web in the widthwise direction. The rolls 15, 15', 16, and 16' fall in contact with the inner sides 21 and 22 of flanges. The rolls 15, 15', 16, and 16' may be engaged with the upper and lower faces of the web. The axes of the rolls 15, 15', 16, and 16' may be inclined at a predetermined angle .theta.h in a direction horizontally rectangular to the rolling direction. It is preferred that the axes of the rolls 15, 15', 16, and 16' be vertically inclined at an angle .theta.v to the horizontal plane.

  • Patent number: 4685320
Abstract: A method of rolling steel rods or wires by grooveless rolls for reducing sectional areas of the rods or wires and achieving a stable rolling operation with high efficiency by limiting to less than a predetermined value the ratio of a long side to a short side of a cross-section of a blank material (having a rectangular cross-section) which has passed through each pair of grooveless rolls or limiting the ratio of the diameter of each pair of grooveless rolls to the gap therebetween. The method of rolling steel rods or wires by grooveless rolls also achieves high elongation efficiency to make stable the rolling operation by limiting the ratio of the diameter of each pair of grooveless rolls to the gap therebetween. The method uses a grooveless roll entry guide in the grooveless rolling so as to securely hold a blank material from entry to exit in a gap between the pair of grooveless rolls to eliminate overturns at the ends of the blank material and fins extending from the material due to the overturns.

  • Patent number: 4680953
Abstract: A roller entry guide to guide material along a longitudinal axis has a body and a pair of generally parallel roller assemblies pivotally mounted on the body for rotation about an axis normal to the longitudinal axis. Each of the roller assemblies is located on an opposite side of the longitudinal axis to define a passageway for material moving along the axis and includes at least one roller rotatably attached thereto. The guide also includes a wedge that acts between the roller assemblies and the body. The wedge has a pair of legs disposed at either side of the body. These legs have tapered portions at the ends thereof which are operable on respective roller assemblies. An adjustment assembly is operable on the wedge to position the wedge to induce rotation of the roller assemblies about a vertical axis, and cause the rollers to be moved simultaneously and to equal distances towards or away from the longitudinal axis.

  • Patent number: 4676085
Abstract: A back up roll assembly for supporting an intermediate roll and an upper work roll consists of a plurality of rotatable rollers spaced apart on a common shaft by fixed saddles and in engagement with the intermediate roll. The number of saddles exceeds one more than the number of rollers so that the back up roll assembly begins and ends with a saddle, each saddle being engaged by a piston cylinder assembly mounted in a frame, which frame takes up all of the rolling load and adds rigidity to the compensating system. Each piston cylinder assembly controls the positioning of its saddle and its neighboring rollers to exert a localized influencing effect onto the intermediate roll to compensate for, and/or control roll deflection.

  • Patent number: 4674310
Abstract: A rolling mill strip tension controlling apparatus may also function as a looper roll and shape meter and is provided with a plurality of generally aligned axially rotatable strip contacting rolls which are supported on rotating arms which in turn are rotated by actuators such as hydraulic cylinders. By monitoring actuator pressure and position a difference between the actual values for position or pressure and the predetermined values is used to provide through a servomechanism suitable corrective action on an individual roll by roll basis. A switch may be provided to permit the system to provide information from a computer to the servo system in a position mode or a pressure mode. The measured values may take the form of oscillations with respect to a predetermined base value.

  • Patent number: 4674312
Abstract: Pilgering apparatus for reducing a tube particularly of zirconium alloy. The reduction is effected by grooved annular dies. Each die has a recess in its bore extending between the surfaces on which the die is mounted on the shaft on which it is rotated. Under the pressure applied to reduce the tube, the die is flexed. As a result of the flexing tension exists in the die in the volume near the recess and pressure is developed in the volume near the groove in which the tube is engaged. The pressure counteracts the tension resulting from the tube-reducing pressure. Each die is case hardened in the region of its grooves but not in the region of the recess.

  • Patent number: 4674313
Abstract: A roll stand has a frame, an upper backup roll and a lower backup roll rotatable in the frame about respective vertically spaced axes, and an upper working roll and a lower working roll flanked by and operatively engaging the respective backup rolls. A workpiece normally passes horizontally through the nip formed by the working rolls. Actuators can urge the backup rolls toward each other with a high force and with a low force. Respective upper and lower drives are connected to the respective backup rolls and energizable for rotating same and thereby pulling the workpiece engaged between the working rolls through the roll stand. A clutch is connected between one of the drives and the respective backup roll and is openable to rotationally disconnect the one drive from its backup roll. A controller is connected to the one drive and the clutch for deenergizing the one drive and opening the clutch for low-force rolling. For high-force rolling the clutch is closed and both drives are energized.

  • Patent number: 4669294
Abstract: A rod or bar mill stand (72) is constructed to be used either in vertical or horizontal disposition. When in the horizontal disposition the rolls (3) are driven directly by the usual drive consisting of motor, pinion box and drive spindles which are arranged at the same general level as the stand. When the stand is in the vertical disposition, a drive adaptor (50) is introduced to transmit the drive from the drive spindles to universal spindles (71) arranged about the stand (72) to connect to the necks of the rolls (3).

  • Patent number: 4665730
Abstract: In a rolling mill wherein product is rolled continuously in successive first and second blocks at the finishing end of the mill, a pinch roll unit is interposed between the two blocks. The motor speed of the pinch roll unit is employed in combination with other variables to preset the motor speed of the second block prior to entry of the product front end therein. The preset motor speed of the second block produces an acceptable level of interblock product tension once the product has entered the second block. Thereafter, product elongation in the first block is monitored and required adjustments to the motor speed of the second block are made in order to maintain interblock product tension within acceptable limits.

  • Patent number: 4662202
Abstract: A cascade speed control for tensionless production in a rolling mill by the measurement of stand motor current with temperature compensation. A low tension speed ratio between pairs of mill stands is calculated by successive incremental corrections. The corrections are based on the difference between a no tension current and a tension current for the motors of the mill stands as compensated for temperature variation. In one embodiment a compensation factor is calculated by taking the temperature difference of the material at the times the currents are measured and multiplying the difference by an empirical constant which relates the change in motor current to a change in temperature for a particular plant. Another embodiment illustrates temperature compensation by using current compensation values which are obtained by storing a no tension current profile for one of the mill stands.

  • Patent number: 4658621
Abstract: The rolling apparatus contains a controlled deflection roll and, in order to improve uniformity of the roll nip or gap or to more precisely maintain a desired rolling profile, a counter roll contains a journal-less tubular roll or shell which is articulatedly supported at a support beam or at supports of a roll stand. The support distance of the counter roll at the most is equal to the effective support distance in the controlled deflection roll. The bending lines of the controlled deflection roll and of the counter roll thus can be matched in an improved manner.
