  • Patent number: 7203499
Abstract: In the present invention, the altitude is introduced in the positioning determination. Preferably a three-dimensional position determination is performed. The altitude is according to the present invention introduced as additional information in terms of pre-determined geographical altitude data (40). The position determining can take place either in the mobile unit (20) or in any suitable node (10:1) in the wireless communication system (1). A provisional two-dimensional position can also be provided, which is subsequently corrected to a three-dimensional position by use of pre-determined altitude data. The position determination is based on arrival time measurements (t1–t3) of signals (30:1–30:3) between the mobile unit (20) and base stations (10:1–10:3) of the system (1). Both downlink and uplink signals are possible to use. Round trip time measurements can be used to further reduce the need for several hearable base stations (10:1–10:3).

  • Patent number: 7203480
Abstract: A system for broadcasting wireless data service in a mobile communication system includes sending a request call for a wireless data service from a mobile terminal to a mobile switching center, identifying whether the terminal is registered in the mobile switching center, transmitting authentication code information indicating that the terminal is registered in the base transceiver station, and releasing the corresponding call in the terminal receiving the authentication code information and receiving the wireless service data. The authentication code information may include a Walsh code and a long code necessary for allowing the terminal to reconstitute the data. Through this case information, the system can broadcast wireless service data throughout an entire region and be assured that only mobile terminals storing compatible code information will be able to access the data.

  • Patent number: 7203492
Abstract: In a communications network, a home domain of the network formulates a multicast packet destined to a first multicast address locally unique in the home domain, encapsulates the packet in a packet destined to a second multicast address other than an individual care-of address, and transmits the packet. A mobile node visiting a foreign domain receives a packet containing the second multicast address. In a foreign-to-home multicast transmission, the visiting mobile node formulates a multicast packet destined to the first multicast address, encapsulates the packet in a packet destined to the second multicast address and transmits the packet. In the home domain, a packet containing the second multicast address is received and decapsulated to extract a packet destined to the first multicast address. The second multicast address is either a globally unique multicast address or a foreign local multicast address which is locally unique in the foreign domain.

  • Patent number: 7203501
Abstract: An apparatus and method for determining position information of a mobile station (MS). The apparatus directly estimates a propagation delay error by measuring a signal strength of a propagation signal for use in a mobile communication system, and reduces a MS position error. The apparatus reduces the MS position error by either combining the propagation signal for the mobile communication system with a GPS signal or using only the propagation signal. The apparatus receives Mobile Station (MS) position acquisition signals from the mobile communication system in order to estimate position information of the MS. The position signal acquisition unit receives the MS position acquisition signals, acquires a position signal from the received MS position acquisition signal, and outputs an acquired position signal. The primary position calculator calculates a primary position using the acquired position signal received from the position signal acquisition unit.

  • Patent number: 7200402
Abstract: A method for performing a soft-handoff in a mobile streaming media system, and a method for performing a hard-handoff in a mobile streaming media system are is disclosed. In the soft-handoff embodiment, the present invention detects that a channel quality between a mobile client and a first base station remains above a drop threshold and that a channel quality between the mobile client and a second base station increases from below to above an add threshold. The present embodiment then sends a first multiple description bitstream from the first base station to the mobile client and sends a complementary second multiple description bitstream from the second base station to the mobile client. This method thereby provides improved utilization of wireless bandwidth during soft-handoffs, in contrast to conventional systems where the same bitstream is transmitted from each base station.

  • Patent number: 7197288
Abstract: A method and system of communicating between a base station and a mobile station is disclosed. The base station may be the core of a cell site, which is defined by radio frequency radiation patterns. The cell site may be divided into a number of sectors, each defined respectively by radiation patterns. The mobile station, while within any of the sectors of the cell site, may communicate with the base station on a reverse link by encoding signals using a spreading sequence offset by a common time delay. On the forward link, each sector is assigned a respective time delay that is within the common time delay. While within a respective sector of the cell site, the mobile station may receive signals from the base station on the forward link that have been encoded with the spreading sequence offset by the sector's respective time delay.

  • Patent number: 7194280
Abstract: Establishment of a forward link traffic channel between one or more candidate base stations and a mobile station considers forward link quality such that the initial transmit power is set to a level that achieves a desired received signal quality at the mobile station. With this approach, the initial transmit power is set to a mobile-specific power level rather than to a default initial transmit power level. That is, the open loop transmit power control that sets traffic channel power at the outset of a call, or under certain handoff scenarios, uses knowledge of forward link channel loss and interference to set initial transmit power for the traffic channel to the level needed to achieve the target signal quality at the mobile station. Such knowledge is gained from receiving pilot signal measurements for the candidate base stations from the mobile station, which measurements may be improved in accuracy by compensating them for base station loading.

  • Patent number: 7187926
Abstract: A process and system for controlling the use of satellite transmission capacity in terrestrial networks for the substitution of out-of-order data lines. The circuit/process is characterized in that an independent, local control apparatus, which monitors a backup terminal with the software specially written for this application, cooperates in limited manner with the data transmission device of the user and, based on the analysis of a data control signal, detects the need for alternative routing. Via communication lines and modems, the control apparatus switches on the transmission carrier of the affected satellite modem which is connected to a satellite antenna. The satellite antennas are in communication with the satellite via the transmission carrier. All other, non-affected terminals in the network also receive the transmission carrier of the affected satellite modem. The transmission capacity of the asynchronous overhead of the satellite modem is used for the transmission of destination addresses.

  • Patent number: 7184710
Abstract: In a radio access network, a drift radio network controller (DRNC) [262] transmits to a serving radio network controller (SRNC) [261] either (1) a filtering rule for a candidate cell [so that the serving radio network controller (SRNC) can generate a measurement list for a user equipment unit having a connection controlled by the serving radio network controller (SRNC)], or (2) a list of cells qualifying [according to filtering rules stored at and applied by the drift radio network controller (DRNC)] for inclusion in the measurement list for the user equipment unit. The filtering rule provides criteria useful for determining whether the candidate cell qualifies for inclusion in the measurement list of cells for the user equipment unit. If the candidate cell is a shared cell or cell for which the user equipment unit otherwise has permission for usage, the candidate cell qualifies for inclusion in the measurement list for the user equipment unit.
