  • Patent number: 5216402
Abstract: A separable inductive coupler for transferring electrical power across a dielectric medium using magnetic induction. Its coil geometry allows for easy disassembly of primary and secondary circuits. When primary and secondary coils are mated, an extremely low leakage inductance transformer is formed. This provides for good high frequency operation at high power density. The coupler allows electrical power transfer without metal-to-metal contact. The design allows easy removal of the primary or secondary coil from the transformer. The coil geometry has very low leakage inductance and very low high-frequency resistance which allows high frequency operation. The power transfer density is much higher than previously achieved with separable inductive couplers. Approximately 6000 watts has been transferred through a version of the present separable inductive coupler having a volume of 25.8 cubic inches, yielding a power density of 230 Watts/cubic inch.

Abstract: An inductive device comprises a first winding which is provided on a core and which is composed of electrically conductive segments which are shaped approximately as a U-shaped plate having two substantially parallel end portions of unequal width and a wedge-shaped central portion. The segments are formed as metallized portions of the outer surface of a cap which is made of an electrically insulating material and which is shaped as a ring having a U-shaped cross-section. The segments are electrically isolated from one another by non-metallized strip-shaped portions of the outer surface of the cap. The cap comprises includes metallized pins which constitute connection members for the segments and which are connected to electrical conductors, for example, on a printed circuit board. In conjunction with the segments, the conductors constitute the first winding.

  • Patent number: 5210513
Abstract: An electromagnetic apparatus such as a transformer or a single winding inductor is provided with a cooling arrangement. The apparatus has a magnetic core and a coil winding disposed about and carried by a leg of the core. The magnetic core has legs connected to the leg that carries the coil winding and these legs have flat surfaces that directly contact a flat surface of a metallic heat sink to thereby provide a direct heat conductive path from the legs to the heat sink. Heat generated in the coil winding is transferred to the heat sink via the leg that carries the coil winding and then to the heat sink via the legs that directly engage the heat sink. Heat generated in the magnetic core due to hysteresis or eddy current loss is also transferred to the heat sink.
