Abstract: A proactive speculation method decreases the call setup time for private calls (200) and selective dynamic group calls (300). In a push-to-talk dispatch network (40) an originating mobile unit (10) sends a wake-up packet (54, 114) to the dispatch network (40). Prior to initiating the push-to-talk function, the target mobile units (20–30) receive a wake-up packet (68, 146–148) from network (40). Thereby, prior to establishing the push-to-talk function, each of the mobile units in the push-to-talk call have been coupled via RF links. If the originating mobile unit has a current IP address, direct wake-up packets (72) may be sent.

Abstract: A data communication transceiver, such as a PCM or xDSL modem, is operable in a training-while-working mode in which it both trains and communicates user data. In some embodiments, upon initiation of a data communication session, the transceiver operates in a startup training mode in which partial training occurs that is sufficient to enable low rate data communication; the transceiver then enters the training-while-working mode in which it communicates user data and completes training. When training is completed, the transceiver enters a data mode in which it communicates user data but does not train. In some embodiments, if in the data mode conditions arise requiring retraining or making retraining desirable, the transceiver enters the training-while-working mode and retrains while continuing to communicate user data.
Abstract: A method and apparatus that determines how much power to allocate to each of a plurality of reverse link power control (RLPC) Channels to be transmitted from a base station, based upon data rate control (DRC) messages transmitted to the base station. Historical information is used to determine the quality of the Forward Link over which the RLPC is to be transmitted. If the history of the DRCs received indicates that the remote station to which the RLPC Channel is to be directed has not transmitted a DRC recently, then the base station allocates power to the RLPC Channels based upon information provided to the base station in DRCs that were received by the base station, but that were directed to other base stations. Accordingly, the base station can allocate power among the RLPC Channels without having received explicit information as to the quality of the Forward Link between the base station and every remote station intended to receive the information on the RLPC Channels.
Abstract: A portable communication device including a power control system which estimates Eb/Nt by determining the variance of the noise components of PCBs that are received on the fundamental traffic channel. The power control system includes a demodulator for demodulating a BPSK modulated (or PAM) first signal from a base station, a noise variance calculation circuit that samples the perpendicular noise component of the demodulated signal to determine a noise variance, a power estimation circuit that measures the power of the demodulated signal and provides an estimate of the power of the first signal by eliminating the noise variance from the demodulated signal, and a comparator that compares the ratio of the power estimate and the noise variance to a threshold. The comparator output is a power up or power down signal to the base station.
Abstract: Method and device for transmitting information between electronic devices, which are able to send and to receive information as well as be in wireless communication connection with each other. In the method an active communication connection is identified and in case the communication connection is active following phases are carried out: the first earlier mentioned electronic device sends automatically the information the user of the earlier mentioned device has chosen as a response to the identified communication connection and the earlier mentioned information is automatically presented by the other electronic device to the user of the other electronic device as a response to the identified communication connection.
Abstract: Components of a radio-frequency (RF) apparatus including transceiver circuitry and frequency modification circuitry of a crystal oscillator circuit that generates a reference signal with adjustable frequency may be partitioned in a variety of ways, for example, as one or more separate integrated circuits. The frequency modification circuitry may be implemented as part of a crystal oscillator circuit that includes digitally controlled crystal oscillator (“DCXO”) circuitry and a crystal. Abstract: An outer loop power control apparatus and method in a mobile communication system are disclosed. If a first received frame has no errors and the raw BER of the first received frame is equal to or greater than a predetermined raw BER, a power control mode is changed to an adjustment mode. If a second received frame following the first received frame has no errors and the raw BER of the second received frame is less than the threshold raw BER in the adjustment mode, a target Eb/No is decreased by a product of a first step coefficient and a decrement unit. If the raw BER of the second received frame is equal to or greater than the threshold raw BER, the raw BERs of the first and second received frames are compared. If the raw BER of the second received frame is less than the raw BER of the first received frame, the target Eb/No is decreased by a product of a second step coefficient and the decrement unit.

Abstract: A method system and components for outer loop power control particularly useful for non-real time/real time data services uses data transmitted in many bursts of short duration, called Temp-DCH allocations. A target metric, preferably, target SIR, is adjusted with differing step up and step down levels to converge on a relatively low steady state level of step up and step down target metric adjustments. The initial target SIR and the transient step size for target SIR adjustment is determined in a dynamic way in the outer loop power control for each Temp-DCH allocation of non-real time data.

Abstract: An architecture for providing high-speed access over frequency-division multiplexed (FDM) channels allows transmission of ethernet frames and/or other data across a cable transmission network or other form of FDM transport. The architecture involves downstream and upstream FDM multiplexing techniques to allow contemporaneous, parallel communications across a plurality of frequency channels. Moreover, an automatic frequency control resolves some issues of a free-running clock in an upstream tuner of the central concentrator by performing adjustments based on the average frequency error of a number of active upstream tones. In the preferred embodiments of the present invention, the automatic frequency control (AFC) utilizes a feedback loop for at least each active upstream tone. Also, the average of the active upstream tones is determined and is utilized in providing feedback to adjust the automatic frequency control (AFC).

Abstract: An adaptive closed loop transmit power control system which does not require extensive factory calibration of power control loop bandwidths and feedback detect path gain settings over the power transition ranges, frequency bands of operation, temperature, and supply voltage is disclosed. The system automatically compensates for any gain or slope variations in the analog feedforward and feedback paths to maintain system stability and meet performance specifications. The system achieves this by using an adaptive digital signal processing (DSP) system architecture within the feedback path of this closed loop power control system. The system eliminates the need for extensive factory calibration of such parameters as loop bandwidths and feedback detect path gain settings over power transition ranges, frequency bands of operation, temperature, and supply voltage.
Abstract: A wireless communication facility and method employs a mobile unit having a number of alternative modes of digital wireless communication.
